The Planetary landing and planetside missions discussion Thread

Plus lots of tracks could be being made all at the same time, in the same place, but in different instances.

Most likely it will be done as laser tracks on ships now - they 'burn', but then slightly disapear, they way they were made, in few seconds.

Frontier are showing the first look

One thing sticks out again with regards richer environment and more eye candy required, ok we see a "crashed T9" but I was a little disappointed in the level of detail for example debris wreckage even crash markings on the ground something to beef it up a little, I hope that frontier are still developing some more detail with regards this as not unlike the salvage wreck sites very small hardly no debris again lets see some detail something worth looking at, Planetary landings is great and i cant wait BUT I hope the level of detail improves.

Also I couldn't see the new scanner picking up signs of the T9 either in the images are objects on the surface items that we just stubble across or will there be some form of radar bounce signal so we know where to look !!!

First impressions Hmmmm keep working on on DEVs lets see richness here, please dont make us wait for other updates in 2016 for these things mentioned above...

I studied the pic a little. It doesn't look like a wreak so must as more a crash landing that seems to have happened quite a long while ago. The T9's mostly intact and partly buried from erosion. Also I'm not sure but that looks like that also could be two ships and not just the T9. (Anaconda?) Granted you have a point if most of the wrecks look like this then it'll be more to desire, but for this one crash I think it's fine and can't wait to see what else they come up with. It's just the first look as you pointed out so give it a little bit. No need to panic just yet.

Just like the ship death variants, will be great to see variations of this, T9 and other ships; Some rusted out like this one, some with a scorched earth damage and debris, some still on fire. +1 to erratics, rocks and craters too, I'm sure they'll be there personally.

Achieving that sort of thing with PG takes man hours though or you can end up with, "saw three burning T9's today and a rusted one, meh, they were all the same". I'm sure FD are more than capable of getting there with increasing variations, reaching for that kind of total realism and 100% sure the engine can do it. Got to give FD that dev time though.

Meanwhile, imagine consolation in focussing on the treasure, of salvageable stuff that's IN the T9? Screenies like this are unforgiving but the game plays in real time so sure, you can admire the high res view, just don't forget, my Wing is on your six!

Great job FD.

Admit it Obsidian, you got clones :D

I've honestly never come across a system he's explored first. 3000 some odd and counting.

What Horizons really means is that exploration is going to slow down exponentially. There are currently Tens of millions of rocky planets and moons out there that have already been "discovered" but not "searched" for anything on their surface. People are going to be scouring a lot of these since many are in or close to the bubble, and the long striders are going to be making much less progress. No more scanning 200-400 systems a day.

planetary landing and the occurence of sunlight :)

I really like the looks of elite dangerous. One thing that bothers me consistently ist the Appearance of stars/suns and nearby sunlight respectively. I gather that to see anything while orbiting a star it is a must to darken the Emission of light. But don't get me wrong when i say this detail makes the universe look a little artifical or naive. I would prefer to be blown away by the light when coming out of hyperspace and afterwards you would notice the filters (or what ever) align with the lokal intensity of sunlight. It should at least not be such a perfect fit like coming out of hyperspace and watch a star like polaris look like a jack-o-lantern. There would be cool to see some interferences here like if the filters have to work hard to dim out the sunlight. Am i right?

Now we're going for landing on planets surfaces. Here i have a screen from the newsletter and some "modified" selfmade screen, that I would favour to be the look of sunshine. I guess it would be cool, when you could some like toggle the "sunglass-filter" anytime in game.

:)

If i spend a month to explore one planet, will i get as much data/money as from just jumping and scanning? This is the most important question.

Consider that most explorers are a long way out, this will leave all those planets close to the bubble free for a second wave of "first to" explorers to make their mark.
Assuming there will be a "first to dig a hole" Tag?
Or even first to do circle work in a scarab....
for those unfamiliar with circle work see here...

I agree with OP, I want more detail. I'm hoping that we are seeing beta landscapes and they are not finished yet.

Check out Outerra, Look at the procedural texturing on the rocks, I know its an Earth simulator with volumetric lighting, but the fractal textures are superb, I want ED plandings surfaces to look this good!

sorry the forum wont let me insert the video, go to YT and check out Outerra, look for the Procedural Earth Simulator video

Clouds looks weird in that video. However we all hope that FD will make it as good as possible using the most modern technique.

Just claim one of those ice worlds. Nobody thinks of going there. :p

I do. Take a look at the geographic features on some of the larger ones. They're amazing.

21 Earth Masses. How long that that make the canyons and ridgelines that stretch as far as the eye can see from Space?

Yes that is an Ice Ball.

Yes it is glowing from extreme internal heat due to incredible atmospheric pressures.

Yes, it probably does feel like sitting atop a demonic megasphere of otherworldly hatred when you are on it's surface. Sadly we have to wait two years to experience this because of the atmosphere :(

Even when you can land on planets with atmospheres good luck getting out and walking on that one, 21 times the mass of the earth means 21 times the gravity, if you weigh 100 pounds on earths, you weigh 2100 pounds on that.

Why would I walk anywhere when I've got a fusion powered ultrabuggy?

Even when inside the buggy you will feel the gravity, it won't be very pleasant and you will never adapt to that kind of gravity and that is if you are not crushed under your own weight first, the human body is a fragile thing.

Handwavium is a favorite Frontier tactic. Horizons is bringing us rocky worlds, many of them are out there that're the same size and larger, expect there to be no limitations on exploring them unless you enjoy that ephemeral crackling of your immersion breaking while you're in the game.

Same reason we have magical blue shields, potions to restore them, and warp drives with no credible science behind them. It's a video game.

Highly selective tactic you mean.
