The Planetary landing and planetside missions discussion Thread

Well it's a nice start, a couple of things, "texture tramlines" these are a pet peeve, lots of games have this issue where as your distance increases, badly made seamless textures that are tiled(heavy) over meshes/terrains show these tramlines, you can see what looks like this in one of the images, and the other is the terrain looks a little bland, and while that may be due to this current planetoid, I'm expecting to see convex and concave terrains which produces cliff faces, caves etc...

Other than that, it's start in the right direction, may take time to perfect it, will have to wait and see.

Time will tell but at least with the forums the Devs do look around and when they see the feedback generated right here and the remarks people are making they will know more :)

Its a rocky planet. What do you want? An amusement park? :O

YES
With roller coasters and a Hot Wheels track with loops to take your Scarab around!

Methinks yon OP dost protest too much.
Cut FD some slack. Its not even out yet, and FD are notorious for fine tuning as they go.

I like the HUD, it's simple yet effective without adding too much clutter on the screen. However, I think the addition of a compass for planetary flight might be a helpful tool to include and would not add too much to the HUD data display.

It looks....

...bland, the textures of the surface, the wrecked ship, just bland.

FD if you want all that money from me you will have to improve a lot the quality, a lot!

I'm not sure what you mean. Many rocky planets are probably the same all over. What were you expecting?

It's a WIP.

It's a bloody rock (and at least the terrain casts shadows on itself).

I think you probably need to wait for planetary landings to get your No-Mans-Sky fix.

IMHO, this is great progress.

I think it looks fcking awesome, to be honest :D

As for lacking details an such, bear in mind that you have no idea of the details pertaining the "crashed" ship, perhaps it just landed there and the pilot died(rp) or something :p And you have no knowledge of the planet/moon/whatev. so it could and it probably does look vastly different other places.

What really upsets and worries me personally is ... well, there are like 3 station variants in the game. About 5-6 outposts. Few star types - and they don't even differ in a matter of color, I think, meaning like one type star is exactly the same color as another. You jump out and see same orange bulb.

Same goes for planets. If you did some exploring or even played a game a few hundred hours like me you can not say 'wow' to some planet that you haven't seen before - you've seen them all.

The way it looks now, we'll get yes, some gameplay on surfaces, some bases (about 2-4 variants, I suppose with slight variations), etc. and then FD will go on to implement a next feature, like multicrew and so on.

This game would be 100% perfect if some dedicated team or outsourced teams would add up more variety to everything that's been done as primary assets to the game. More stations, more npc's, more life.

Otherwise I have a huge concern we're going to get a landings with 4-6 toys to play with and that will stay like that for ages. The fact that for 1,5+ we're looking at same 4 ADS on stations in every possible corner of human occupied space actually proves that fact :(

One thing sticks out again ...
First impressions Hmmmm keep working on on DEVs lets see richness here, please dont make us wait for other updates in 2016 for these things mentioned above...

Oh for the love of...

Yes. One thing does stick out. Every time I dare stick my head in this forum I am reminded that it is nothing but a cesspit of entitlement and negativity.

YOU CAN LAND PLANETS. Maybe your 1337 skillzorxz can do better, but for the time being us mortals are quite happy with what Frontier are doing, thank you very much.

The level of detail looks fine. Sure, no Sydney Opera House, no Hanging Gardens of Babylon, no vast majestic herds of wildebeest; but what looks like pretty good renditions of airless worlds. Certainly at least as good as Kerbal Space Program; certainly better because it's Elite.

I for one welcome Horizons, with joy, happiness and the warm, comfortable knowledge that all is right with the world, and my alpha level money has yet again been proven to be very well spent.

Disclosure: Days since playing another game other than Elite Dangerous: 300-something. I played Far Cry 4 between the time it came out and ED went release.

LOL,, brilliant,, I think some people just love to moan,, there we go I just did...

The happy people don't really help much apart from moral, but the moaners and thinkers, we are the task masters, always wanting better and more, it's what drives industry, and FD are of the same mind set, always want to do better! Sometimes those things can be achieved easily, sometimes they need hacks that work in the best case scenario, sometimes RD is required to produce something unseen.

When it comes to Vistas it's pretty straight forward, you have what you want to achieve and where you are in the current process.

It looks pretty great to me, and we've barely seen anything yet. The texturing is sharp and clean, there's a lot of actual polygon detail, the shadowing is lovely.

It's also exciting to imagine driving around in all that and actually doing things.

There is a compass, the top scale on the HUD in the middle of the screen is the "heading" guage, that points to the poles.

detail level looks fine to me. Very nice even. Maybe its that the only thing i can really draw comparison with is KSP or that I'm just easy to please but to me this looks great already. Can't wait to see how Ice Worlds look though, looking forward to landing on Europa :D

Looks great to me, I also expect that details will be added as we go through the various iterations of planetary landings as I am sure that work done on adding new types of planets will feedback to airless rocky moons as new algorithms are developed, just like we have already seen with planetary textures, I cannot wait to try my first touchdown :)

I can totally see where OP was coming from, but came off too negative, and whiny about the whole thing.

If anything we should probably be hoping for varied settlements and stations on these surfaces, give them some life rather then just barren landscapes to go buggy off around, much like MASS EFFECT when drivin' around with the MAKO.
