The problem with Consoles

Can we have a discussion with Frontier please, an honest one that deals with how much the release is being held back by trying to get Odyssey to work on old gen consoles?
Stuff I’d really like answered (from fdev not just people speculating.. but without input that’s all we get I suppose)

1. Is the massive delay on consoles due entirely to trying to fit an ever expanding game onto old hardware?
2. Do Fdev plan to optimise odyssey and the base game for consoles in those extra 6 months or just get them working?
3. Is dropping support for old gen consoles being considered (this is likely to enrage but we deserve openness if it’s what is being planned)
4. Will there be a graphically better version of Odyssey for latest gen consoles which will easily handle the upgraded additions to Elite?

I would dearly like to hear some answers from fdev because they are the only ones that know but feel free to chime in anyway.
Additionally it is shocking and painful we have to wait till what I can only assume will be Christmas to play Odyssey.. a month or two wait I can easily handle but that sort of extension does sort of speak to a hitherto unannounced problem other than COVID .. otherwise the extension to the deadline would be similar to the pc release. Some frank info would help. Hence this post. Thanks in advance.

In my fantasy they would:

  • Drop support for last gen consoles.
  • Increase the fidelity of the pc version.
  • Start again on next gen consoles only.

This could be a form of payback for the graphical downgrades the pc version had to roll in so they could be included. Now it's their turn to suck it up.

Also if frontier just got 8 million new players from epic console players are just crumbs on the table?

I'm still thinking it might have something to do with the authentication process of getting the game to consoles, maybe not solely the reason but recon it has something to do with it

I also believe that given Odyssey's FPS style gameplay FDev have a chance of huge numbers on consoles, I speculate that they were going through a testing phase and realised the bugs and issues either wouldn't get past that authentication or it would get the welcome of CP2077, I don't believe there was ever an alpha stage planned for consoles as there simply isn't enough of us to make it thorough

It can’t be the authentication process that holds it up for 6 months as I believe it takes roughly a week of extra time to be cleared but I agree..I hope we get a version that takes advantage of the new consoles which are essentially decent PCs

Lol, where do you guys get this from 😂

The problem with consoles is that they are all part of the neo fascist globalist takeover!

We are all batteries to be used by the great machine overlord.

The problem with Consoles is that they are not PC's.

The latest ones especially the Series X essentially are in terms of being able to handle workloads. The old gen not so much.

I summise that Fdev have realised any Odyssey release won't work on old gen but without them confirming we are just left fuming and guessing. Some clarity from them would be nice even if it's the ugly truth!

Someone will know: Is the new Xbox the same architecture as the previous generation? It appears (and I'm happy to be wrong) that the PS5 is on hardware different enough to require an entire new game to make use of that hardware - if the Xbox is similar in its dissimilarities then Frontier would be obliged to have 4 different versions of the game for 2 consoles - for old and new generation - and to maintain those versions equally until such time as the 'ancient' hardware (like my PS4) can be abandoned.

At least for the PC a single version works as the hardware running the game sorts out the drivers needed... (allegedly!)

Just a thought ;)

I don't get the fuzz about the old consoles...

I mean CP2077 was a new game that was hard to run on an old console. That they have problems running the old game on a new console, ok, but its already running on the older boxes...
Hence the backward compatibility on both consoles...
The fuss arising appears that the PS5 owners want a version for their new hardware (understandable) but that seems to require a totally seperate version 🤷‍♂️ (I have no idea about Xbox but that possibly could be the same requirement)

So there are problems getting it running on the new consoles?
I doubt it, although it isn't impossible, has Sony claimed their latest & greatest is 100% backward compatible with every previous generation game? (The crux of the noise here is that the new hardware will not be leveraged to its maximum potential!)
I'd also imagine that, even in Autumn, the percentage of console players on the latest hardware is unlikely to be significant - and ED is such a niche game that millions of console players are unlikely to be rushing to buy it!
