The problem with Consoles

If Frontier came out and said “Look guys we are having real problems making Odyssey run smoothly on the old gen consoles and have to rewrite a bunch of code but we will do a version that takes advantage of the new beefier consoles and higher end pcs, hence the delay” that would be Great!!!

Even better if they then said “We are not gonna allow the first footfall tag until September when all platforms can compete together” It wouldn’t take away the massively bitter disappointment of having to wait but it would make it bearable and I for one would welcome it!

Perhaps the lockdowns have prevented access to console dev-kits...
I do hope that one of the CM's will drop a line or 2 in to offer some kind of explanation.

Even if they just said that mate they’d have side-stepped an enormous amount of frustration! And my sympathies are with them as it’s clear they are understaffed and under pressure.

Look at the year they took off to fix bugs, we got about 5 major ones fixed and a few more niggley ones no one asked for. Still thousands to go on the issue tracker. It’s my belief they are under immense pressure and for that I’m sorry.

But the lack of communication hurts everybody.

I think the consoles were done a massive dis-service by CP2077 releasing as it did and that the distrust of the (PS4 particularly) console community has rolled over to any other project currently under development, as the users no longer have any faith that the previous generation will be able to play 'new' games.

Whether the current consoles are generally available yet or not, whether you have the money to buy one or not, the old consoles are dead and will be completely unobtainable new by the time Odyssey comes out. Meanwhile, PS5s and XBX will be much more easily sourced.

That doesn't mean everyone should be forced to buy a new console.
For what is worth my daughter still uses her XB360 - mostly to play guitar hero and some kinect stuff - things that are no longer available on the newer consoles.

Having the game running decently on last gen and better on nextgens (in compatibility mode) seems a way better deal for them (actually for everyone else) than angering their customers by not supporting odyssey on last gens.

Explain the four month delay for old consoles then. 🤷‍♀️

Probably a multitude of issues.

It might have something to do with that global pandemic that’s been going round, you may have heard of it.
The UK is once again back in lockdown (after almost a year) because neither our Government nor half the population seem to understand the severity of the situation.

Also the absolute fiasco that was the recent Cyberpunk 2077 release that saw the game being de-listed from the PlayStation store, a 40% drop in CD Projekts share price and a class action lawsuit from its investors.

FDev seem to be taking the sensible approach and giving themselves plenty of breathing space to get it finished rather than taking the CD PR route i.e. announcing small delays every few weeks for almost 2 years then releasing a broken game on all platforms.

It can't be overstated just how weak the previous gen's CPUs (PS4/pro and Xbox one/XbX) are. They are as weak as netbook CPUs from 2012. I'm actually amazed at what some developers have been able to do with them. They do NOT meet the minimum spec on PC, GPU does sure but not the CPUs.

Doesn't mean the game isn't playable on base consoles (IMO). I was playing on base Xbox One and as I've said, performance improvements arrived for both consoles over the years. I went from waiting around 2 minutes to load up the galaxy map to around 20 seconds. Performance in asteroid belts also got a big lift. Both are hitting 30fps minimum and often higher than that at double the resolution of min. spec PCs.

Yes, the Jaguar cores are ancient but developers can and have done wonders with a fixed hardware console spec. Let's see what FDEV can do with that and several more months of development time.

A case in point - cargo not ejecting from megaships, just to choose one of the thousands upon thousands in the issue tracker. It has been documented, it has been cited on, it has been raised multiple times on streams and in forums. It has not even been acknowledged and any time a CM has replied it’s “raise it in the issue tracker” well what do you think we did??

I hear you Commander, I hear you. That's been broken since April last year and has screwed up one of the scenarios with it from Beyond Chapter 4.

We've gonna need cross-play soon, because I honestly wouldn't blame any console Commander right now from jumping to PC or jumping to another game for good. I'm not going to PC yet - there's no way I'm doing that grind again, I've already invested in both next-gen Xboxes, so I may do the latter option and spend more time playing other games - and I have been for a good while now. I'm looking forward to the Megacorp expansion for Stellaris on console next week, and of course, Microsoft Flight Simulator.

I'm not sure if I'll be back playing Elite when MFS is released on Xbox. There are very good and understandable (for most people anyway) reasons for this delay, but the fact is, assuming that Odyssey comes out for consoles in December (likely, IMO) then you're looking at three years between Beyond Chapter 4 and Odyssey for Xbox/Playstation. With a delay like that, I'm not sure how many active console players will still be playing this game at the end of the year, especially those players who have been waiting for Odyssey since Beyond or before then. Hence the need for cross-play.

Agreed crossplay would be the ideal outcome. I would like to play with the larger community on PC but it’s not good game design for a company to say “oh you don’t like how bad it is? Shell out £1000 and go to a PC then” - No not in this climate and after investing heavily like yourself in skins, engineering and thousands of hours of grind to get the playthings I want, a transfer of credits alone just won’t cut it.

From my discussions with many other console players though Frontier are in danger of losing their base on console. Many of my contemporaries are now playing on PC because they felt abandoned on Console and sadly more have given up and just play other games now.

I want Frontier to see that they need to act to hold on to and grow their fan base on console. If as someone else mentioned they offered it in game pass they could potentially access an ENORMOUS market (kinda assuming Fdev now makes most of money from skins which I’m totally happy about btw) The Console crowd could easily buy in as they tend to be more FPS based so if they get Odyssey right for console it could be a big haul. I am glad they are not doing a Cyberpunk though and if it’s gonna take more time to get it right it’s obviously best to make it right but please please COMMUNICATE and make your intentions clear!

Again as mentioned before this isn’t fair on console players that we are effectively the forgotten kid in the corner that has to sit and watch all the other kids get their Christmas presents, unwrap them in front of us and go through the cycle of joy, exploration, familiarity and finally apathy before we even get our hands on it well over half a year later. Not good at all.

And a glaring sticking point that Fdev are already aware of that “First footfall” would be GROSSLY unfair if they don’t hold that particular award till the console release. You’re two-tiering your player base if you do that.

They have ps5 dev kits. Planet coaster is listed as a ps5 title meaning they've been able to work on it.

It would be nice if we'd stop making excuses for fdev and let them explain themselves.

Quite right, I think the community has shown an extraordinary forbearance till this point and continues to do so. We’re all fans of this game and willing them to get it right and celebrate when they do. But dammit that doesn’t mean that we let them off the hook for repeatedly letting us down either!

There might be a tiny winy bit of difference here.
As far as console version goes, Planet Coaster Console Edition is a new game.
And if i'm not mistaken they were required to make it ready for the nextgen consoles (4k and stuff), which means it got the PS5 / Xbox Series stamps.

This is not the case with ED: Odyssey which is a DLC - so it's not mandatory to be nextgen ready... so compatibiliy mode ftw.

I'm already playing more different games then I used to.
Once I can get an Xbox Series X and FS2020 I know for sure that I'll dive deep into it, I'm realy looking forward to this great flightsim, a lot more then Odyssey to be honest.
For whatever reason Fdev decided to postpone the console version of Odyssey with at least another six months I'm sure they're legit, this does mean however that I find it harder and harder to enjoy playing ED and that my anticipation has dwindled considerably.
The summer release of FS2020 will only draw me further away from getting back into ED while an early 2021 release of Odyssey might have gotten the chance to win me back in.

I'm heavily dissapointed and a bit gutted about the delay of Odyssey but look even more forward to the release of FS2020 now which I know will be fantastic considering the fact that I enjoyed the previous FS versions a great deal too.
Sheesh I've put countless hours into the different MSFS versions and this one looks even more then the sum of them put together.
