The Narcissus has an interesting Floral diagram:

No such thing as a silly idea…

The Narcissus diagram is a brilliant connection!

I think this is something worth considering… O7 we have touched on this concept of flowers before with Asphodels. But I never made the jump to Daffodils!

Not a botanist, but quick search, the flower Narcissus is commonly known as a Daffodil, a derivative of Asphodel / Asphodelus / Jonquil?

ā€˜The poet’s flower’.

The system Persephone and ā€˜Asphodel’ are slap-bang in the Lost Realms area, very close to Axis Mundi, I’ve looked previously but couldn’t detect anything in ā€˜Legacy’.

Worth further scrutiny I think.

Asphodel is realy a different flower. Probably just the Brits having trouble differentiating and messing up the names.

Never the less, asphodel is kind of important in the Greek underworld: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Asphodel_Meadows

Sources I just found said daffodil is an English derivative.

Daffodil is the common name in the genus Narcissus of which there are over 50 species. The name daffodil is an alteration of Asphodel with which it is commonly compared!

The Narcissus flower is of the genus Daffodil and Jonquil, while Daffodils are a particular type of Narcissus plant… So technically not the same but they are commonly associated together!

As mentioned previously we collectively have considered Asphodel, but on its own it wasn’t enough to warrant a genuine find, but that diagram of a daffodil is really far too close to the Raxxla logo, that might be the keystone to solidify that area as a key point of interest!

Certainly needs further scrutiny.

Silly hypothesis coming up!

I've been re-reading the abduction of Persephone myth. I think the story is interesting because Persephone has a system, a planet and a station in ED. In addition there are several uses of the name Cora. I've used this version: https://www.greekmyths-greekmythology.com/myth-of-hades-and-persephone/
The second version, that includes Demeter (no fun without her). the story is simple:

  • Demeter and Persephone descends to earth.
  • Demeter has some agri. business, Persphone plays with friends (Nerids and Naiads).
  • Hades likes her, asks Zeus for help and they get Gaia to plant a yellow Narcissus flower (daffodil): https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Narcissus_(plant)
  • Persephone likes the flower, picks it and gets sucked down to the underworld in the hole left by the stem of the flower.
  • The Nerid Cyan tries to help P., but turns into a river.
  • Demeter comes back and is not happy. She turns the other Naiads and Nerids into Sirens.
  • After a while Demeter bumps into Hecate. Hecate is a clever girl. She tells Demeter to check with Helios (the Sun), because he can see everything.
  • Helios tells what happened. Demeter confronts Hades (her brother). He agrees to let Persephone go back to Demeter.
  • Unfortunately Persephone ate some pomegranate seeds before she left the underworld. She therefor has to go back down, every winter (6 or 4 months each year).

We have all read this story. Nothing new here. What I started to wonder about was the flower. It acts as a plug to the portal of the underworld.
The Narcissus has an interesting Floral diagram:

And an interesting Floral formula:
Floral formula
Br ✶ ☿ P3+3+Corona A3+3 G(3)
Bracteate, Actinomorphic, Bisexual
Perianth: 6 tepals in 2 ls of 3
Stamens: 2 ls of 3
Ovary: Superior – 3 fused carpels
Notis the Mercury symbol.

Here comes the silly hypothesis:

Raxxla is controlled by a sinister cabal. They are not the wicked men that Rafe Zetter tells about. They are wicked women. They all carry flower names and control important positions. Examples are:

Also, before the Emperor's ascension, her senatorial seat as a Lavigny was... Facece. A system which already raised plenty of suspicion, as it is.

Florence Lavigny has probably conducted the most masterfull coup in galactic history. She has taken the Empire from the Duval family.
Her husband Prince Aristid Lavigny was murdered by Emperor Hengist Duval, back in the early 3250s. Arissa was only a few years old at this time.

It's not quite clear if Florence actually had an affair with the Emperor or if she has manipulated the DNA of her daughter, as revenge for the murder.

The eventual death of Hengist Duval, very likely happened on her orders. The final act, when she knew she had consolidated the position of her daughter.

Florence, Felicia and Jasmina has shadow influence of one superpower each. It's quite a cabal of flower girls.

Not in game today but checked EDSM and Asphodel is inhabited and has an Earth-like World, Irving World, which has a moon, Irving's Moon. The moon has two orbital stations: Saavik's Sanctuary and John Irving Station. I wonder if the names are from a Kickstarter backer? Or do they mean anything else to anyone?
I like the idea of taking something, in the legends a flower, and getting pulled into the underworld and wonder if this means that there's something in the system we need to take, e.g. into cargo, for the next step in the search.

I would try Onionhead. The Onionhead flower should be quite similar to the daffodil.

Drinking might be ok? Eating is no no.
Still don’t see why you want those mini bottles, when you never fly without several full sized bottles onboard.🄃😁
You’ve sneaked a peek into my cockpit!
But you missed several barrels in the galley!! šŸ˜‰

But I thought Raxxla was full of treasure...
which must mean the bottles of Lavian brandy are at least Methuselah or Salmanzar-sized,
minibar bottles dont count! 🄓

Well, Arissa’s similarity of appearance to SalomĆ© was suggested in Premonition and we speculated that she was another Dark Wheel clone oo....

I thought it was a tribute to John Irving the author (World according to Garp, Cider House rules, Prayer for Owen Meany....)
It would be nice to have access to a database of object names detailing the name origin....but that would probably give too much away!

Over sea and mountain to the Otherworld

Initial Question:
who might be the Rafferty of Rafferty's Paradise in system Azrael?

Looking at the system as part of on going analysis and identified Azrael which is very close to the Greek underworld in the Lost Realms area, and other than the system name, wondered if Rafferty was any indication of greater relevance?

Azrael grabbed my attention because its the angel of death, potentially a fallen angel, and one of the four archangels:
  • JibrÄ«l - Jabrāʾīl or Jibreel, counterpart is Gabriel.
  • MÄ«kāl - MÄ«kāʾīl, counterpart is Michael.
  • IsrāfÄ«l - Israfel, counterpart is Raphael.
None of the other three are in game (apart from maybe Michel)?

Not necessarily surprising because Azrael sits in the Lost Realms area where there are a host of other death-associated deities, so it may not have any individual relevance - other than being part of a larger group of deities which as a group might identify something?

My initial thoughts are Rafferty's Paradise is irrelevant, likely a backers pledge name, whilst the importance is upon Azreal - it being in an area of ā€˜older gods’, and an underworld.

Another oddity I wanted to cover, is one of its planets Noshaq is named after a mountain.

I had noticed overtime various references in game to mountains and hills, so did Guru, and in my analysis of Robert Holdstocks (RH) Lost Realms identified ā€˜mountains’ had a specific purpose.

As a result I’ve since mapped about 15 systems, all with mountain references, many of these suspiciously look like they encircle the Lost Realms area, but that’s not surprising, seeing as I’ve spent a lot of time on this area; but I’ve not yet seen any further afield.

Of those I have found so far, the majority have Hindu, Norse or Celtic origins, this might help establish a common naming correlation from which to search from.

Of note RH Lost Realms does mention specific mountains, including a concept for a ā€˜world mountain’ as potential passageways towards the ā€˜otherworld’, and Micheal Brookes likewise had utilised the term in relation to a Celtic otherworld. John Milton also utilised ā€˜obscure’ geographic locations in Paradise Lost…

I have noticed here and there variously named systems will have a body named in connection to its primary meaning, or some general significance in that area.

Example: Cockaigne - Goliard: Cockaigne a land of plenty / fool’s paradise where common norms are reversed. Goliard, a group of satirical clergy linked to the ā€˜feast of fools’.

Cockaigne is within the Lost Realms area.

Example: Wakea - Meru; Wakea is a sky deity, whereas Meru is unrelated, but it’s one of the mountains discussed by RH and it’s linked to a world pillar in Hindu religion, this system however is likewise situated relatively close to Axis Mundi and various other ā€˜older gods’.

This is not necessarily a specific repeating pattern, eg it doesn’t occur in every system linked with a mountain, however I would advocate it’s evidence of some archaeological hand placed element, which attributes that system as having some unknown relevance. Or it’s totally irrelevant.

The Hindu link may just be attributed to the mountain ranges of which there likely are hundreds in RL, At least two have a very close RL link but in game are very far apart; it’s difficult to identify any spacial correlation through names alone.

The Norse and Celtic names don’t have any known mythological links; they form parts of large RL regions with old Celtic or Norse names (common in the UK), but many neighbouring peaks are not in game.

  • Azrael - Noshaq - Hindu mountain.
  • Wakea - Meru - Hindu mountain attributed to centre of universe.
  • Elysia - Kailas - mountain abode of Lord Shiva.
  • Bohmshohm - Kaliash - Hindu mountain.
  • Eurybia - Makalu - Linked to Hindu Shiva and means ā€˜giant’.
  • h Draconis - Makalu - duplication?
  • LTT 606 - Moel Lefn - Welsh mountain, part of the Hebog ridge.
  • Cocijo - Moel Hebog - Welsh ridge.
  • Tarach Tor - Moel Sych - Welsh ridge.
  • LTT 198 - Skiddaw - Lake District, old Norse for ā€˜archer's hill’.
  • CD-73 12 - Scafell - Lake District, old Norse for ā€˜fell with the shieling’.
  • CD-79 950 - Hellvellyn - Welsh mountain.
Unknowns
  • Ys - Chroin - Scottish for peak?
  • Dinda - Hood - name of mountain but maybe too generic, opt to discard?

*Update - the Beaumont insurrection

In Michael Brooke’s Elite Legacy his character (whom Brookes confirmed was a self-portrait) discusses a system which is not known to be in game called Beaumont.

ā€œBring up the Beaumont insurrection from 3294ā€ Hammer form Elite Legacy by Michael Brookes.

Beaumont is French for beautiful mountain.

Speculation (warning tin-foil)

So far all of the above systems might look to be within a very narrow alignment, on their own possibly meaningless, but when linked, based on their commonalities and layered over the Lost Realms mapping (final draft to be published soon), they might build a narrow ā€˜causeway’.

Any system linked to Hindu mountains might be a link to the Hindu world pillar concept, and represent a directional boundary towards Meru.

Any system linked to Norse/Celtic mountains could be a link to mythology involving the journey to the ā€˜Otherworld’, and represent a directional boundary towards Avalon.

The choice of naming may be intentional, simply to focus the attention whilst not being overly obvious.

Of interest is that certain systems linked to the Lost Realms are indicative of various fictional persons who traveled there in myth, these originally look odd, given their distance, however a few of these seem to be on the opposite sides of these boundaries!

This ā€˜corridor’ is surrounded on various sides by systems who names are synonymous with water or death.

This concept is very similar to that Robert Holdstock describes in Lost Realms. A passage over water through mountains or hills to the Otherworld.

Visually this pulls the eye into a corridor ending in the Lost Realms area, if applicable this further establishes this area to be the location of, and that Raxxla is, a RH metaphor for paradise / Eden which is hidden (obfuscated) in a realm of other paradises, the lost realms.

Or visa-versa it denotes a path upwards to the Empyrean, and a possible location of heavens gate!

However I do suspect this might still be a case of pattern bias, therefore still tin-foil, if true it significantly focuses our area of interest.

More data is needed.

*Speculative: rough draft of ā€˜mountains’
IMG_7421.jpeg

*Speculative: Mountains layered over Lost Realms.
IMG_7422.jpeg

*edited: I’ve since cleaned up this map, focusing instead upon how these bodies may relate to each other. And I suspect they form three areas of interest.

What is of note about a proportion is all those linked to Hindu mountains have bodies which are the moons of the first body in that system, and all have two stations orbiting them, many have naming linked to a concept of paradise!

IMG_1600.jpeg

Those systems linked to Celtic/ Old English ranges, I suspect correlate to some unknown narrative aspects likely concerning the Lost Realms area.

The Hindu range however I suspect may be a directional clue, which ends in a specific area around Fortuna and intersects Tiamat.

phonto.jpeg

This last assumption follows a logic attributing an abstract concept that the mountains are actually linked to the story of Dante, and his ā€˜spiralling’ mountain of Purgatory.

What is interesting about this concept is the base, as within Dante, sits in the underworld. Also of interest is the base also sits within the confines of the Cities of Gold zone, and the system which holds Tannhauser Gate.

OK, finally felt fit enough to fly today. Got 3 Trinkets of Hidden Fortune in the hold so didnt want to risk attracting unfriendly attention in an anarchy before my reflexes were improved. I've been marooned with covid for four+ weeks in Terra Mater, which seemed to me to be quite a good candidate for Raxxla's location (or at least the Omphalos Rift).

Reasoning:
I focussed down a while ago onto Hecate- Hecate was one aspect of the "triple goddess" and could be the solution to each of the first three lines of the toast (Jewel-Luna (Selene/Hecate), whisperer/siren- Hecate, grief/woe-death/underworld/Hecate)....Hecate was the ancient greek goddess of doorways, triple crossroads & the key holder to the Underworld...perhaps the old "door that is also the key" hint? @Rochester has identified MB inserted/named systems and objects relevant to the various mythological Underworlds, clearly a lot of effort so very probably part of the Raxxla puzzle (though I haven't discounted the possibility this could be more obfuscation). The Raxxla logo in the game codex shows three crossed lines (triple crossroads?) and a dotted line with 33 dots; which in engineering drawing suggests something hidden. I reasoned it might be hidden behind Hecate... as in permit locked with the permit obtainable therein?

The permit for Terra Mater is available from Hecate. Terra Mater has 32 astronomical bodies, so with 33 dots in the logo perhaps Raxxla is a hidden thirty third?
However today I've flown around in Terra Mater and found nothing (which of course doesn't mean it's not there!). According to the journal file there are possibly 37 "comet locations" (unallocated bodyid values) therein, but we were forbidden from hunting them with the overflow method, and I heard the game code has been changed to prevent that....

I did then go back to Hecate to search around Hecate 5A (strange wording of Tourist beacon) and Hecate 6 but nothing found.

I'm stumped!
Hot afternoon... time for a beer!

P.S.
there might be a way to find these 37 hidden locations- I suspect that NPCs occasonally drop into/emerge from them. But that is a boring way to game!

where's that beer....šŸŗ

The relation between Terra Mater and Hecate does feel incidental, though: the former is the headquarters of an old player faction which controls 26 systems (the latter among them).

However, if you want to stay at that line of investigation, it caught my attention that Terra Mater 8 is a gas giant with seven moons - so an eighth one could be intentionally obfuscated...

I’m not at all convinced about the 7th moon bit of the codex, sounds like obfuscation to me. Lyta Crane’s name sounds too made up also-LYT dark systems? Crane could be Corona Australis (CrA) or Crab Nebula?
(Edit: I’ve visited both!)

Yes, I think several systems (including Terra Mater) were permit locked with permits obtainable from adjacent system megaships a few years ago, i.e. well after game launch. But I don’t know if Terra Mater was permit locked before that.

It’s not at all clear how to find the ā€œomphalos rift deviceā€ or how to activate it. I visited and honked the two installations by Terra Mater 6, docked and investigated the homing lights in GR8MINDS Coriolis....

The Terra Mater system was permit-locked at launch but the permit-giving faction did give out the permit from systems they had a presence in.
I made it my business in 3301 to get all the permits I could and the Terra Mater permit was probably the hardest to get, as the anarchy faction that gave it out had only a small presence in one system at the time (during 1.3 iirc), so missions for them were scarce. It took me the better part of a week, playing more than I am able to these days.
