Unless you are a Unix/Linux sysadmin in which case recursive acronyms are simply par for the course :)

I could have accepted a sub-acronym.
A self referencing top level acronym will create and infinite acronym loop, that may collapse an create an acronym singularity........................Wait a minute...

Cap’n, sensors show a strong acronym anomaly!

I found my calling

Started playing about a month ago, a couple weeks ago I was starting to doubt there was any ultimate goal for explorers. Then I stumbled across the name of a planet and a legend browsing the wiki. I've dropped everything and have put all efforts towards finding raxxla. My asp stands ready, where do I need to start?

Start by reading The Dark Wheel by Robert Holdstock. Plenty of copies littering the internet. Here's a link:

http://www.elitehomepage.org/dkwheel.htm

Sounds good, anything else?

I have a couple of things on my todo list:
  • Map the orbits of Castellan Belt Cluster 2 & 4 in Lave
  • Obtain a permit for Lave 2
  • Create a star map of every star as seen from Shinrarta Dezhra
    • Then travel in-system in SC towards all unknown stars

Sounds good, anything else?

There are so many possibilities. What we actually know about Raxxla is very minimal ... most of it comes from Holdstock's The Dark Wheel. There is a brief mention of Raxxla in John Harper's And Here The Wheel but nothing concrete to suggest it is anything more than a myth.

We who hunt Raxxla are little Don Quixotes ... each of us chasing our own windmills. Nobody can tell you that your particular windmill is any less of a giant than his or her own.

For me, personally, the quest has taken me into the writings of Robert Holdstock. He, by and large, created much of the mythology of the Elite universe in authoring the original 1984 game's user manual and the accompanying novella. He went on to write the critically acclaimed Mythago Wood series of novels but before then, even before Elite, Holdstock wrote many other works including The Alien World under the pen-name of Steven Eisler. It is there in The Alien World that many of the words and phrases familiar to Elite: Dangerous players find their origin. This includes Raxxla, The Dark Wheel, Thruspace and much else. It is my hope that Raxxla exists somewhere in the galaxy as an homage to Holdstock and somewhere among his literary works is the key to discovering the hidden location.

My notion could be completely wrong and so I encourage each of you brave Knights to dig in, imagine what is possible and go out tilting your own windmills. Nobody can really tell you "where to start" because ... you've already begun.

I thought i'd check Shinrarta Dezhra properly for POIs and tourist beacon logs. Nothing too exciting, but a bit more background info on the Pilot's Federation, and one passing mention of the Dark Wheel.
Also kinda interesting is Shinrarta Dezhra B3 (off star LTT 4550) is perpendicular to the plane. Do gas giants form like that, or maybe it's been captured?

Also did some deep space sweeps, in case there's a clue "hidden" much like Voyager 1 is in-game but obscured by distance and direction.

Shinrarta Dezhra to Sol, nope:

Shinrarta Dezhra to Sirius, nope:

So in your opinion " a certain celestial body, the key which is also the door, a place which isn't a place, the myth" is not "obfuscated in the outer rim " ?
These are the only things we know for sure in E: D about Raxxla. And they come all together in the same "clue". (I would add the " tiny little bit obvious" thing being the connection with TDW )

Actually ... it is a complete assumption that the the "obfuscated in the outer rim" missions were references to Raxxla. We don't know that as a fact. It could have been smoke and mirrors to put us off the trail ... or a reference to something different altogether.

Outer rim could mean the outer limits of a system, e.g. Shinrarta Dezhra. Obfuscated would then fit very nicely into that.

Well.. THE outer rim is what is written. But, of course, due to the well-known far-fetched minds of our FDevs could be any "outer rim" of any possible "thing"...but I never heard speaking about "outer rims" of systems.
Never. Besides the Milky Way, I can imagine the outer rim of a Nebula, even of a cluster, even of the bubble ... but outer rim of a system ?...never heard. Did you ?
Besides, "outer rim" means there would be an "inner rim" imho not very adequate for a system.. but again, who is in the minds of our FDevs ?

It seems to me that if we are talking about "rims" in the context of "The Dark Wheel" we might very well be talking about the outer rim of the Wheel and not the rim of a galaxy or a star system at all.

Yeah ..well..
"Answering the call of adventure"
"Obfuscated in the outer rim"
If this is not clearly an Elite Exploration mission .. I give up.
Others two are Elite Trade and Elite Combat.
But again.. being an E: D storyline, why not ? [haha]

The mission-giver was not in Shinrarta. So if he means "outer rim" of a system he would mean of HIS system, otherwise he would have precised what system outer rim... IMHO

It's not uncommon to talk about the outer rim of a system, like in this article about the discovery of Sedna: http://www.spacedaily.com/news/kuiper-04b.html

The trouble is ... the the great bug "call of adventure" to entice an "experienced adventurer" on a fresh "expedition" is nothing but a local data delivery mission. Read the text of the mission itself. There's nothing in there about traveling to some distant location and the text subtitle of "obfuscated in the outer rim" doesn't have a clear meaning in relation to the mission text.

Here's the mission:

It talks about how far away Peral Refinery is and how the distance seems to call for someone much more qualified then somebody who is "mostly aimless".

"Now if an experienced explorer was to head out there ..." doesn't refer to the outer rim. It refers to going all the way out to Peral Refinery (or some other nearby location depending on the RNG that filled in the variable with a particular station).

Wow ! I love this (these) thread where so excellent (and patient) fellow-threaders help me to improve my teribble Anglich !
Thanks Han ! [yesnod]
