Has a cryptic interpretation of “Obfuscated in the outer rim” been looked at? e.g. something hidden within the words ‘the outer rim’?

But again, so : The mission-giver was not in Shinrarta. So if he means "outer rim" of a system he would mean of HIS system, otherwise he would have precised what system outer rim... IMHO

Right.

Honestly the biggest hurdle is the fact that these missions apparently got scrubbed. My personal belief (held without much evidence) is that the subtext of "obfuscated in the outer rim" was intended to convey a sense of being brought into initial contact with The Dark Wheel. I think later missions, once you were tuned into what was going on, would probably have read "elucidated in the inner circle". Alas, I think there was some backpedaling on Frontier's part with the realization that too many clues delivered so early in the game's history would result in us finding Raxxla to quickly and before the game engine was mature enough to make the discovery as rich as it should be.

I don't think they want us to find Raxxla. Not yet anyway.

Our Addams pet-penguin is unbeatable at this kind of exercises. ;)

None of the 88 modern constellations has a name that's going to fit with those letters.
Maybe there's a system called 'Perimeter' somewhere.

Oooh! There IS the Perimeter nebula...

We've been told that nebulae are good places to hide (obfuscate) things. I might almost comsider that significant enough to follow up on.

[Edit]
Finally got in-game and no sign of the Perimeter nebula - seems it's player-named as part of the Galactic Mapping project. Back to the drawing board :(

I'm of the opinion that any 'clue' that pertains to Raxxla's location will be something like this: An ancient satellite signal somewhere out deep in the milky way in a particular system in one of the many underexplored regions, similar in nature to the voyager probes only a few centuries more advanced. It will lead to a planet just like so many listening post, where a ship will be found crashed a long time ago. The ship's data logs will be glitched from age and give spare and crude coordinates that when triangulated will lead, not to Raxxla, but to a distant, abandoned Dark Wheel base. The base's logs will contain dairies of one Jason Ryder, which mention a string of systems he once visited, and when each one is visited will reveal evidence to Raxxla's real existence. Hints that when accumulated reveal a trail....

It turns out Raxxla just "might" have some 'clues' to its existence afterall. https://player.twitch.tv/?volume=0.8&video=v66487974&time=1h40m30s

You beat me to it. Googling Perimeter Nebula all I got was Star Trek Wrath of Khan, so presumably the player-named object is a tribute to that

Rim Nebula, 4.3 Kly from the Bubble, in the outer rim of our arm ...could be the real thing !

(Which, by the way, reminds me my original tinfoiling about Raxxla actually being the Mystery of the F. Rift ... [haha])

The Zura...what?
This storyline abomination is the filthy substitute of the original FR Mystery !
I am still convinced that the Rift has been misplaced in the range of one galactic arm, and should be in the Orio-Persean Gap (Just as the Old Lady said: ...until the end of the arm...).
There, Raxxla floating obfuscated in the outer rim (of our arm, the arm) and the " Raxxlian " capturing every ship passing by and sending them through the gateway to...wherever. They'd like it or not.
Which binds Raxxla to the origins of the Rift myth of ships disappearing, almost as much as having The Children of Raxxla messing around with the Formidine Rift storyline as the main role stars.
So...genuine.
