@Jorki:Even more when it is discussed in such a well maintained thread. (FP and following pages are a mine of interesting infos !) Thanks Macros ! [yesnod]

Ah....I had it in my head that it was a planetary nebula. That explains why it didn't show up as a system in EDSM. Derp.

So, what then? If it's like any of the other dozens of nebulae I've seen, they've all been bagged and tagged. If there was anything there, wouldn't it have been spotted?

There's still plenty of Red Dwarfs and the like that are untagged in the nebulae I've been to.
This is probably because they're mostly surrounded by snowballs, but on the way to Sag A* there's an M class star orbited by an ELW with my name on it.

Fair point...and nice find.

Maybe I'll head out there and poke around after this CG in Run is complete. I've been in the bubble too long anyhow.

When I'm looking for unexplored systems I use the EDDiscovery 'stars near me' list and compare it to the Nav Panel list, then visit systems that are only in my Nav Panel. It's not foolproof, since lots of people don't use EDDisco and it didn't always automatically log system locations, but it reduces the amount of 'wasted' time. Plus it helps update EDSM with system information which is definitely a good thing.

I for myself was joking about the Rim Nebula. I don't think it is related to the ..obfuscated in the outer rim.. clue. But, again, who knows ?

By the way...

I've just entered the Oort cloud region.

Just to see 'the outer rim' of a system.

Nothing but Rescue One, so far.

Something is definitely hauling the Castellan Belt Cluster 2 along at 1.36Mm/s. The belt cannot be locked and jumped into like other locations from the Nav Tab. I managed to get within 1Mm range and then emergency drop, but without a Safe disengage ready message. Whatever object is driving the belt is also ghost-like, i.e. no face planting emergencies happened.

Made it in. Nothing exciting to report I’m afraid.

I don't think "Obfuscated by The Outer Rim" is a play on the phrase The Outer Rim like a cryptic crossword clue.

I put all of the system names in to an excel sheet (all 8661 of them which I found here: https://cim.sotl.org.uk/elite-dangerous/ )

I removed the spaces and then filtered for systems with 11 characters as per "The Outer Rim".

I searched for anagrams of "The Outer Rim"

No matches

I searched for anagrams of "Outer Rim"

No matches

I then searched for names where characters 3 and 7 were the same, and characters 8 and 9 were the same - maybe a cypher.

No matches.

I then tried the same with just "Outer Rim" and the matching R's. 11 systems meet this criteria however there's no further pattern I can see that links the remaining letters to an type of cypher shift.

No matches.

:(

Just one thing to add. “Obfuscated by the outer rim”... the outer of rim is r & m. So the location in question could be obfuscated by the letters r & m.

A search on all system names that contained letters r&m and then removing r&m to from the name lead to about 150 “new names”. Cross referencing them against EDSM system names yielded just one match and I’m not sure what it means if anything as I’ve confused myself a little and feel a lot like I am barking up the wrong tree.

The Brambai systems once r&m are removed leaves Babai which is an existing system name. I can’t see anything interesting on EDSM and am away from Elite so cannot go and have a look (also I’m about 17kylies away in game).

Dunno. My twopence worth. I like cryptic crosswords and wanted to stretch the legs on the idea. Longshot. Not sure I found anything useful to be honest.

Well..IMHO the "rim" of a sphere is a surface. But have fun anyway !:)

Systems have fat rims. :p

Strictly speaking a sphere cannot have a rim. Rim definition from OED: “The upper or outer edge of an object, typically something circular or approximately circular”; from which the rim would be the circumference/edge of the orbital plane of the system (which would cut down on Han_Zen’s search area!) or galaxy. However OED also allows: “A limit or boundary, ‘the outer rim of the solar system’”, which IMHO is a confusing definition. :)

I'm not gonna search it. I just flew through or at least 1.6ly out. Things appear very normal out there. Quite a lot of signal sources.

This was the last one.
