Are these anomalies detectable by fss? If so what type of signal do they appear as?
They should show up in the nav panel just from using the 'honk', appearing as 'notable stellar phenomena'. You can find them in the part of the fss associated with Concentrated Signal Sources (further right than those of Conflict Zones, in about the same place as RES sites and some distant stations and installations).
.
Once inside the Lagrange Cloud, keep an eye on your 3d scanner display for a set of unresolved contacts that does not match the location of metallic crystals. You can see metallic crystals from a few km away (also in night vision) but the Q-type anomalies are tiny and you need to be within a km or so (and do not show up in night vision). Fly toward any contact on your scanner that you cannot find a visual counterpart for and, depending on the type of notable stellar phenomena, you might find an anomaly or a life form. The ones in the two Lagrange Clouds in HIP 15310 were Q-type anomalies. Each cloud had only the one type of anomaly (from what I have seen, this is generally true). Scan them whilst they are 'active' to record a 'trait', but be careful!

The Shades of Antares

Antares is a star that has been part of Elite lore since FFE. At least in name. The crash of the highliner Antares has been in Galnet and the journals, on several occasions.

There are several points to Antares that makes it interesting, from a Raxxla perspective.

- Antares is one of the four Royal stars, marking the cardinal points of the ecliptic. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Royal_stars
800px-Divine-Infinite-Calculus-Crown.jpg

These stars would mark "the ends of the world" in ancient times. The outer rim of the sky wheel, so to speak. They were watchers or guards of the sky.
Aldebaran (Tascheter) – vernal equinox (Watcher of the East)
Regulus (Venant) – summer solstice (Watcher of the North)
Antares (Satevis) – autumnal equinox (Watcher of the West)
Fomalhaut (Haftorang/Hastorang) – winter solstice (Watcher of the South)

I thought this fit rather well with the wheel and outer rim analogies, so I started investigating a bit.

- Each of these stars are also associated with an Archangel(Aldebaran (Michael), Regulus (Raphael), Antares (Uriel), and Fomalhaut (Gabriel)). Archangel is a title that can be achieved in some Elite versions. This would replace the 'Commander', in front of your name.
ThargoidInvasion-TaskCompleteMessage_zps0b0a386a.png

Uriel is the Archangel of Antares. He is also the presider over Tartarus. Tartaurs is 'the deepest void'. As far below Hades as earth is below heaven. This is where the Greek goods put the defeated Titans and where the Watchers put the fallen angels in the Abrahamic mythologies.

To be on the safe side, I went to all the Royal stars. The only place I found something unusual, was in Antares(surprise :D).

The hole star is actually obfuscated.

In the Antares system we arrive at Antares B. The heavier, but smaller and dimmer companion. Antares is not visible. It should be, because the star is huge and bright. It's a super giant.

Until you reach the distanse of about 84,000 ls, it's totally black.
Antares87000.png

The black disk just covers the star disk. It's actually possible to see the three small planets in orbit.

The obfuscation area gets smaller and smaller as you approach 84,000 ls. At about 120,000 ls it covers the entire view field. I can look at the star out of the side window and it's still black. At 85,000 ls the star has to be almost in the center of the view, otherwise it's fully visible.

Here at 95,000 ls, you can see the star starting to glow as it gets closer to the edge(red arrow) of obfuscation.
Antares-95000.png

- The obfuscated area is not fixed on windshield, it follows your view.
- The cockpit and ship is litt by the starlight, even when the star is totally black.
- The effect is the same from all directions and does not seem to be limited in distance outward from the star.
- The effect is the same in external camera and when the ship is without power.

If this is active obfuscation(not a bug), it's either something that 'affects the pilots eyes' or it's the ship(and Remlock mask) that does it.

There are a few Galnet articles that may hint that this may be something real:

I haven't found anything else in the system, so far.
There is a deep red patch on Antares A1 where the thick cloud cover is permanently gone, but it's har to see details.

I recommend going to Antares and take a look. :)

Nope. I've only had it happen that one time, relogging didn't fix it, and it went away after the 2.2 update dropped.

I've tested this on three different computers, with different graphics cards and drivers. Looks the same on all of them.

Looks the same in VR, as well.

Weird, perhaps if it is a bug it may have re-emerged because of the lighting overhaul. Have you tested this with any other large stars?

It did not happen at Alpha Cygni. That one is only 116 solar radi, though. Antares is 380 solar radi. Almost the size of Rho Cass.

Hmm, if TDW station is dark, then we have to revert to the old "can't afford an ADS"/use parallax version of finding it. Hang around the eighth moon of an unnamed GG and watch for the moving "star/point of light". Should be fun...

Bumpity-bump! Any of you wise CMDRs know the answer to this?

Did you used to be able to select permit-locked systems?

I recently tried, and found that you can no longer select them. I am certain you used to be able to.

Is this a new thing?

POST EDIT: as in select them in the galaxy map.

The reason I ask is that I was sure (but can't remember) that you used to be able to select them in the galaxy map. I can't do it any longer, which is a pain because of something I wanted to check out...

I don't remember having problems selecting them but if you type the system name in it should do that for you.
.
Most individual permit-locked systems in the Bubble now say which faction gives the permit. A couple say they are locked by the Pilots Federation and no permits are issued. Some say nothing at all other than 'X system permit required'. Are you checking the different messages given when you try to hyperspace to them?

Yeah, you were able to select permit locked systems. This is how dead reckoning was possible, in a way.

I thought so. Thanks for clarifying, the memory is so distant I couldn't recall. Cheers!

I was trying to select Polaris in the galaxy map - however, the 'select' function is red and cannot be selected, meaning I cannot select Polaris. I've done it before - I thought, and a post from a long time ago involved a CMDR actually flying to Polaris over a course of many hours only to find that because systems are instanced, they had got there but not got there in a kind of quantum-cat kind-of-way. Which means that s/he must have been able to select it. Not any more, it seems to me.
