The reason no-one answers when you hail them...

Is because evidently no-one is flying these ships?

So far, of all the other Commanders I've met in open play not a single one has replied. Not one.

This one was flying around a station and then came to a stop (I assumed to look at me) so I flew right in front of his sidewinder and flashed the lights in a friendly "hello" type fashion. No reply. Thrusters are firing... still no response.

Then I have a look in the cockpit and sure enough, there is no pilot...

I've tested this on other ships, and just an empty seat in those too. So the question is, who's flying these ships? Ghosts?

lol yeah, there aren't avatars in the cockpits yet. Soon, hopefully.
However, the reason you're not getting responses to chat is probably because players either didn't see you hail them or don't know how to reply. The chat system isn't intuitive.

Yeah it's a shame really isn't it. I look forward to the day when I can actually get a response from a "stranger" and form alliances, even if it's only temporary.

Something to look forward to eh.

I always attempt to chat with other players when I see them in my system or in Supercruise. I only send one greeting, and if I don't get a response, they either didn't see my message or don't want to interact with me.

What I think also happens is communication is disrupted if you're in a system and jump to Supercruise, or if you're in Supercruise and you drop out into a system. If a player is in the same system as you but about to jump to supercruise, they might feel it pointless to respond to you because they're going to be out of chat range.

Some folks might actually be wondering why they dont get replies from other cmdrs. The real truth is that its because you cant reply to chats. The only way to reply that I know if is to target the other ship or use voice comms. Often times the other pilot is busy and without being able to do something as basic as a /r to reply to someone I have a feeling alot of newbs will feel very lonely and wonder why nobody wants to talk to them. Comms are , lets say...lacking....

coms need SERIOUS improvements.

i had some responses to voice chat, but somehow my mic is muted and i have no clue how to work that out. could hear others though.

I have my Harry potter invisibility cloak thingy on. Which is a good thing, as I like to pilot my ships stark bollock nekkid :D

How do you reply to someone?

CMDR Someone msg me,

I need to search them on the space, scan on ships there and hopefully I could find the ship that CMDR Someone rides. If I could find, I could chat him via COMM, if not then no replys.

Any fast way to reply without having to scan ships around you? Like /reply command or something

Make sure you have your Comms panel mapped to a key in the keybindings. I think by default it doesn't have one (I replaced chaff and use C)

I always try to reply if someone hails me.
but sometimes it a mad scrabble for the keyboard or I'm wearing the rift.

another thing I found, if someone chats and you reply, you can get an error. Something about no one to broadcast too.

I got hailed today, but I had no idea how to reply. I have 4 and 5 mapped to the comms panel, 4 takes me straight into the chat box so I can start typing, 5 takes me to the menu of online contacts. Maybe the sender was the "Cobra Mk III" in the comms list, not sure. If someone hails you, and you get their name with the hail, it should resolve thier name without you having to target them.

is the comm system introduced / trained in the missions or in the tutorial videos that were put up? It might be the case that they dont know how to respond to you

I got voice coms with someone in supercruise, but both our mics were shot to hell so it was scrambled mess so I just shouted DUDE SPACE ROCKS and jumped to light speed.

Meh, I never wanna take my hands off my HOTAS :)

Yep, that's one reason many people don't respond, because a lot of us are using HOTAS rigs with the keyboard pushed away. Even if the keyboard is available, I'm sure some Commanders don't want to take their hands off their primary flight and combat controls, when it's not certain if a text is an invitation to chat or fight.

Another reason is that the game is a showcase for the Oculus Rift, and Rift users are blind to the outside world, including their keyboards. Not everyone is a touch typist.

I've been advocating for a series of simple, canned messages that could be called up on a HOTAS switch, just to get the communication going. And then if it's obviously not turning into a combat scenario, pilots could find their keyboards and continue the conversation.

True, and a very good idea, at least until I can figure a way to delivery canned messages with a Voice Attack command. I'm sure it's possible, just haven't delved into the scripting enough to figure it out yet. :)
