The reason no-one answers when you hail them...

Me too... Just dont know how to

Map a key in your key bindings to Comms panel - not quick comms. This opens up a menu beside the comms panel with a list of people you can talk to - friends and nearby Commanders. Once you get that list up it is pretty intuitive.

I had my first chat session with another cmdr a while ago - he turned up at the Lugh nav point and I messaged him to ask which side he was on :) He responded with the "right" answer and we spent a little while mutually exterminating everything wanted that wasn't from our faction. We had time between engagements to exchange effective communication... even within a couple. Lines like "Your pigeon, Sir!" (followed by "Sorry, I know I said he was yours but he was about to ram me. Next one's yours.") or "Leave so-and-so alone, he's wanted but he's one of ours." Unfortunately I had to eventually leave to rearm and when I got back couldn't get back into the same instance with him or we would have continued :)

The chat system is effective, barely. I fly HOTAS but the keyboard is in reach and it's not too bad to mash the quick chat button and type a quick message once a conversation has started.

True, and a very good idea, at least until I can figure a way to delivery canned messages with a Voice Attack command. I'm sure it's possible, just haven't delved into the scripting enough to figure it out yet. :)

Don't know why I haven't thought of that. I've seen it work for others. Guess I gotta stop being lazy haha.

It's definitely working ok; it's just not explained very well, nor is it particularly intuitive!

Well - I use a HOTAS and rift and I have no issues typing, but I most likely wouldn't respond just because I'm busy with flying a spaceship.

If some stranger texts you for no reason whilst you're driving your car, do you text back? I also don't pick up my private phone if the number calling isn't in my contacts.

lol yeah, there aren't avatars in the cockpits yet. Soon, hopefully.
However, the reason you're not getting responses to chat is probably because players either didn't see you hail them or don't know how to reply. The chat system isn't intuitive.

Imagine how disappointed my brother and I were, after coordinating a maverick like fly past, cockpits passing within inches of one another, recording a sure fire you tube hit, only to realise the bloody things are empty.

As for messaging I have about 40 phrases stored in voice attack commands, everything from "hi" and "thank you" to "give me your cargo or die", yes I know too lazy to type but it is useful in combat.

Got hailed today in an imperial system and fought a few battles together at nav point. Was pretty nice to see some1 after 2 weeks. But it was hard to figure out the com system so I didn't get to say thx and bye. (greetings from cmdr cromlech ... Back on Thursday! )
The com systems really needs some love. (especially hard when using the rift)

Hmm, really good points made thanks Commanders.

I really hope they focus on this aspect of the game to increase the chances of getting some interaction going between players.

That's what I was really looking forward to if I'm honest.

I have faith they will be able to improve these features, but it's critical for the health of the game for all these newcomers to be able to communicate easily.

As it stands right now, like someone said earlier in this thread it can seem awfully lonely out there, despite ships whizzing about here there and everywhere.

That feeling of isolation is not normal for an "MMO" which is how this has been marketed from the beginning...

I just don't want to see this game fail, and implore the devs to make communicating with one another more intuitive, and rewarding. :)

Its a bit rubbish, was in lave got hailed with nice chat request by 2 commanders while docking but...... which were they cobra 1-4 eagle 1-2 or the hauler or one of the 2 t6's..... no commander names at all.

Is their a command or /name feature to send message direct to the name or to specify the name of the commander you want to chat too?

You can pull up a list of commanders in the instance - but if I remember correctly you will have to identify each commander by facing them and selecting them; or they won't be scanned and you won't get a full name.

I haven't chatted with anybody yet. I tried, but didn't get a response.

Most of the time I actually meet other players I'm to busy doing something, like preparing for SC/jump, docking etc. It's just to tedious when you aligned your ship the only ways you can actually dock and then you would have to stop, turn the ship around, search for whoever is not an NPC, etc...

The way comm is implemented now makes it nearly impossible to chat. :(
