It would be interesting, not to mention useful, for others to actually show us what you did differently. Saying that you got it working now is good but doesn't help anyone. Please share this information with others, other than the fact you used a different router.

No problem... though I cant take any of the credit...

Added a couple of lines of code to the Applog.xml

<Self port="60751" ip="myipaddress" name="mypcname"/>

I added these settings into my router admin settings as a DMZ and a virtual server. I switched on the UPNP function and disabled my router firewall (though the PC firewall was on and only bypassed by Elite.exe.)

Most of that I tried on the other router with no success, so I still have no idea what finally worked???

Anyway hope this helps anyone locked out of the Alpha forums to get multiplayer up and running...

Big shout out to Richard for helping me figure much of this out...

Happy hunting!

After configuring my firewall to allow traffic to my machine over UDP 60545 and configuring the NAT setting to map my public interface on port UDP 60545 to my local machines IP, and changing the XML file as explained, I still got no connection to the server.
So I tried this:

telnet 79.125.11.123 19364
Trying 79.125.11.123...
telnet: connect to address 79.125.11.123: Operation timed out
telnet: Unable to connect to remote host

Which seems to indicate that the game server is simply not accepting connections on the port indicated in the XML file.

Or it simply indicates that Telnet works over TCP and you are trying to connect to a TCP port that is not forwarded, not UDP which wouldn't have worked even if you were as the game isn't listening on a TCP port.

Have a look at this, which details some of the differences between connection and connectionless oriented protocols.

Just noticed that X2Eliah mentions:

"just before the </Network> tag"

and not

"just before the <Network> tag"

Which probably explains why this didn't work for me so far.
If only I could download the new alpha now, the download is stuck. And I already uninstalled the previous one as instructed.

But for those who misread like I did, maybe this helps.

Ah! It caught me out too. Thanks for pointing this out. I now have connectivity through my double NAT routers by forwarding a fixed UDP port at both nodes and using the non-UPNP workaround.

Don't Forget to update your firmware on your router

Just in case anyone missed this alert, make sure that the firmware on your router is up to date:

Out of interests, I rebooted by router for the latest firmware earlier this week and despite having nothing to do with the firmware itself, my internet download/upload speeds have improved quite a bit...

Great to see my last post has helped at least one commander.
<off topic>
In the mean time, I have found out the reason why I could not download the new alpha release.
It turned out to be my Sophos firewall identifying the download as a malware attack and dropping the download traffic after approx. 10%.

Routers That Work

Hi all, I have a connection issue. I cannot connect to Multiplayer. I have read the posts relating to my issue and spent all weekend trying to resolve. I have BT infinity and a BT HH3 I have tried to setup port forwarding etc with no success. Has anyone out there successfully set up a HH3. if so how. If not what router connect with no issues? I am not a computer guru and just want to join in the fun.

Greetings Commanders,

I have a HH4 at the moment and it works fine, though I did alter the XML file as recommended.

Not sure exactly what router is at my home in the UK but I know we're on UK Infinity and my wife has no problems. (Other than the usual gripes about fair play ;))

Assuming you're using uPNP which is by far the easiest route:

Go here

Run the software for it to test your system for uPNP readiness.

If something fails and you can't fix it post back and we may be able to help.

Gents thanks for the info, I got the issue resolved with the help of one of the ED guys. I had not modified the Appconfig correctly :S

I have never used a SuperHub or any kit from VM other than their cable modems. When I upgraded to 120MB they tried to suggest that I had to use the SuperHub. After ten minutes arguing and passing me to customer support they relented and upgraded me. My VMNG300 is ticking along nicely.
