I noticed a pattern and thought it would be interesting to discuss.
First and for all, i dislike math and am not really good at it generally, but what i noticed is that numbers that are part of the chain 2, 4, 8, 12 and 16 are seen as "nice" numbers and long story short, most people are happy or atleast long for reaching these threshholds as the number of animal groups they want in the game. For example 6 southamerican animals felt like way to little, but the 8 we now have satisfy most people and are seen as a not optimal but okay number.
And its with all of these numbers and that most animal groups in the game are represented by numbers on this spectrum, making people feel satisfied. The obvious connection right now is that all of the numbers are related to the number 4, so thats what i called the rule of 4.
But lets start with some examples. I know that some animals are restricted by their actual number of species, but this is quite the pattern. For picks where i talk about people wanting more, the source for that has been the meta wishlist
So we have:
-2 elephants
-2 tortoises
-2 monitors
-2 big walking birds
- 2 lemurs
- 2 penguins
- 2 camels
- 2 giraffes
- 2 hippos
- 2 tigers
- 2 brownbears
- 2 iguanas
- 2 rhinos
- 2 tapir
- 2 scorpions
- 2 small exhibit lizards
- 2 basegame european habitat animals, then 4 after the first dlc
- had 2 bettles, now 3 with people having not wanting the third or wanting a 4th
- 1 horse, with people wanting one more
- 1 fox, with people still longing for one more
-had 2 crocodilians (with people now longing for a fourth)
-2 medium sized african non-feline carnivores
- 2 small sized african omnivores
- 2 small sized african carnivores
- 2 swine (with 2 more that are quite popular)
- 2 marsupials (with people wanting atleast 2 more, mainly the wallaby and the tasmanian devil would satisfy most people)
- 2 canines base game, now 5, counting the fox 6 (been in 4 dlc, most popular genus for dlc animals)
- 4 distinct big cats base game, now 6 with people longing for 2 more
- 4 bears basegame now 6 with many people wanting no more but 2 more popular choices
- 4 apes
- 4 monkeys
- 4 frogs
- 4spiders
- 4 exhibit lizards
- 4 basegame african exhibits
- had 2, now 4 american herbivores
- 4 birds
- 5 european habitat animals
- 6 snakes
- 6 european animals
- 8 antelopes
- 8 north american exhibit animals
- 8 southamerican habitat animals
- 9 australian animals
- 12 south american exhibit animals
- 12 north american habitat animals
- 19 northamerican animals, 16 excluding the 3 primarly southamerican species (Giant anteater, capuchin monkey, red eyed threefrog)
- 20 south american animals
- 27 asian habitat animals
- 30 asian animals
- 34 african habitat animals, 39 overall
These were a lot of numbers, i find the pattern really interesting, especally as many uneven numbers that wernt dividable through 4 have been changed by now, or have still some obvious or atleast poular inclusions open that will.
Take this numbers how you want, most of them were measured with the help of the fandom wiki and i hope you find them atleast interesting.
This can ofcourse mean nothing, but its still fun to find patterns in things and the fact that dlcs come in 4+1/7+1 animals packages proppably had a helping hand in evening the odds.
But for maybe a bit more creativity sake, there are some numbers that arnt yet on thouse golden 4 threshmarks, so what animals would you add to achieve them? And would that selection of animals satisfy you if that was the final count?
Could be interesting to note and another way to use this thread if the numbers of my survey themself arnt deemed as interesting.
Also if you find more selections of animals that find into this pattern, feel free to comment and i will add them to the list
