The S.H.E.P.A.R.D. MISSION: Elite Dangerous Deep Space Exploration

I suggest taking 4 :p

And for those without Horizons, we'd still love for y'all to come along the trip, y'all just wouldn't be able to do the SRV stuff.

Yeh I'm taking 4 as well... which is a lot of extra mass, but for a 6-month mission I dont want to be caught out in the black without one! And yes, we already have at least 3 cmdrs enrolled who do not have horizons - so there will be others on the trip!

Greetings Commanders,
You can count me in... Been in the bubble for far too long. Let the space madness commence.

Excellent! Thanks for signing up... I see you have signed up to be part of the defense fleet - what ship will you bring and hardpoints? Also, if you havent already, check out the EDEX Discord, we have a channel #shepard_Expedition, where you can get in contact with other cmdrs on the mission, and stay up to date with the latest mission info: https://discord.gg/0t9DFHttXuE4HkFR

Wow....this looked intriguing enough that I had to register for these forums and ask. I recently got an asp explorer and I'd really like to run her through her paces. Questions about joining up:

1) What software do I need to have on my computer other than the game to participate and be useful for this?
2) I don't have access to the sol system.....am I out of luck if I wanna join in on this fun?

Hey thanks for your interest! Both are great questions..... I have good news.

1) You don't NEED any additional software, however I recommend three additional features that will greatly enhance your journey, especially if this is your first big exploration:

EDdiscovery - this is a program that runs in the background. It's primary purpose is to track which systems you visit and will also also you to take notes (although I take notes on my own spreadsheet). FREE
https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php/138155-EDDiscovery

EDSM (Elite Dangerous Star Map) - this is a website that pairs with your EDdiscovery to map your progress along with other explorers. Also note that we will use this website for waypoint and basecamps information for SHEPARD. All you have to do is create a login and password. FREE
https://www.edsm.net/expeditions/summary/id/13/name/S.H.E.P.A.R.D.+Mission

DISCORD - This is the primary communication method most elite dangerous players use to communicate. There is an Elite Dangerous Explorers server with loads on information about exploring, etc. We have a SHEPARD chat channel to meet other cmdrs, exchange ideas, and to share pictures. DISCORD also allows clear voice communication making it easier to coordinate and explore with other commanders. FREE

https://discord.gg/0t9DFHttXuE4HkFR

I highly recommend all three. They are easy to install and will make the journey that much better.

2) Not a problem. There are a few cmdrs who do not have access to Sol. We have an alternate meet up departure system in a system adjacent "Epsilon Indi". I have just finished scouting the departure coordinates on the moon known as Mitterland Hollow and will share them in a few days time.

We hope you decide to join us! If so, sign up at the link below and visit the Discord!

Cool, thanks for the info! Got all 3 set up (well, using the browser app for discord) and landed on Mitterand hollow (that was a fun challenge lol). Signed up as a scout, but I'd be fine with being a basic participant.

Excellent! glad to have you on board. I think we are pretty good on scouts pre-flight, but that doesn't mean later in the Mission we won't need someone to scope out some landing sites, etc... If you can increase your range a few more Light Years over the next few weeks that might make your trip run a little smoother... if you have horizons and engineers you might make a trip to Farseer to increase the range - 30ly will work, but 35+ would be easier...
Stay tuned for more information coming soon!

Hello all,
Apologies for the lateness, but here's my scouting report. ( http://i.imgur.com/waASRKZ.png this is me, by the way)

First up we have VEIL WEST SECTOR DL-Y D66 AB 1 A, a lovely Icy Body Orbiting a Class III Gas Giant. I call this one "Snowball".
Candidate for WP37 as the original had little interest.
Gravity : 0.23G
Coordinates : 26.5 ; -19
Alternate Coordinates (scouted by ABish) : 47.75 ; 173 ( http://i.imgur.com/hdCg9oM.png )

http://i.imgur.com/C9RjNF3.png Approaching the System.
http://i.imgur.com/CkLPZAV.png That Snowball ? That's where we land !
http://i.imgur.com/9nIlGvS.png see the two craters ? We'll go on the Ridge between them !
http://i.imgur.com/Kt6fzSu.png Somewhere that has room for more than one ship.
http://i.imgur.com/cI4pbkO.png Docked.
http://i.imgur.com/F1C8Jwt.png Nice View from the window.
http://i.imgur.com/VPBcdct.png Full Nebula Shot

Then we have WP36 which is a fine Wolf-Rayet.

WP35, situated in NGC 6820 Sector GW-W d1-0 is fine, but ABish found the neighboring system of NGC 6820 Sector PD-S b4-6 to hold a Landable Planet with a spot near a Fissure. I trust his judgement on this one. Maybe there's a better view of the Nebula ?

WP34 in Skaudai XW-F c26-24 is way out and has very little to offer : Namely, it's one star, first discovered by my esteemed colleague Abish.
Much more interesting is Prua Phoe US-B d61 which has three Landables orbiting around a Y-Class Ringed Star ! I call this one " Tire Tracks and Broken Hearts "
Gravity : 0.12G
Coordinates : -33.5 ; 7.5

Flick the Lights On, and you'll see THIS instead :

I'll be posting my route once I've reached what I feel is the end of my scouting leg. I've marked down a few "checkpoints" that are each less than Kylie apart to make plotting easier, for those who would like to beeline.

(There is a small clearing at the foot of the mountain near the south pole that provides absolutely stunning views and a panoramic vista of the parent planet passing by. There are ample places to land even the biggest ships here, but be patient as the ground is a little uneven. Set your guidance for Bercello Penal Colony during approach)

I have create a google form - please complete to confirm who will be there - if you cannot attend them times there is a section that has alternate times for a secondary departure if needed. Please try to be flexible, there are roughly 50cmdrs taking part.

Official Embroidered Mission Patches:

I have been in contact with a few companies regarding the ordering of our SHEPARD Mission Patch. Most companies require a minimum order, usually 50. I will order 50 and ship them to each of you. I am planning on setting up a paypal account that will allow you to transfer me money to cover the costs. Will be around $6 USD for a patch. This is not required, but highly encouraged. On the same google you can select if you would like one.

Official SHEPARD Mission Hoodie:
I have created and ordered a SHEPARD Mission Hoodie - if you would like to order one send me a private message on Discord. Price was around $55 USD

Rendevous with Great Nebula Expedition [GNE]:
I have been in contact with GNE and there are a few commander who would like to join SHEPARD once their Expedition is complete. I have created an alternate Waypoint #8 for us to rendevous with them - Athaict CL-Y G2 [a stunning and complex system with binary B-Class stars and 3 Herbig AeBe stars. This waypoint marks the beginning of LEG-2.

Add Friends In-game
On the main forum page you will find the Expedition Roster behind a spoiler tab. Please add all cmdrs on that list to your friends in game.
https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showt...ISSION-Elite-Dangerous-Deep-Space-Exploration

Add your Cmdr # to Discord
Once you have done all of the above, go to our Discord and add your SHEPARD # behind your name - you can find your number on Expedition Roster on the Forum. For example, Kerenn should become Kerenn [SHEPARD #004]. Once this is complete - I will update the EDSM page to reflect these numbers.

OK, Thats it! I know if sounds like enough, but we have put a lot of work into this mission, and once we get going there is not gonna be time to mess with these things. Please do your part, and complete this checklist of items ASAP. See you all on November 5th! Godspeed!

http://i.imgur.com/jNDXsAY.png Notice how close I am to the Rings ? I didn't see them until it was too late. A kilometer or two to the left and I would have crashed.
http://i.imgur.com/ePAKJQt.png Why risk it to get here, you might ask ? See that chain of craters just under the dot from "5.48Mm" ?
http://i.imgur.com/lfHBLlF.png That's where we're headed. I call it "Scorpio's Nest"
http://i.imgur.com/M39HVSH.png See the double crater under the Scorpio ? There's a mountain range on the right side of it.

I have bookmarked this an I plan on visiting sometime when I get over my severe case of space madness.

Is there a problem if I miss a leg of the trip?
Already enlisted in the Distant Stars expedition, but I believe that in February will be free to meet with you.

Of course you can meet us mid-way. In fact, many cmdrs from GNE [Great Nebula] are going to join us at the beginning of Leg-2 at Waypoint 8 on Nov 26. You could meet us in February around the core.
