mandatory installation of a tracking app that recorded your locations and everyone you were physically close to, as well as giving the police the power to ask people for their phones and check for the installation of the tracking app.

How does this work for individuals without phones?

Socialists love control

Authoritarians love control, but authoritarianism and socialism are not remotely synonymous.

Socialists love control, just remember, you can vote your way into a totalitarian system, but you need to shot your way out of it! Good luck Europe, you're going to need it.

oh, that! (for a sec i thought this was about orange monkey refusing to accept the upcoming election's results 🤭).

well, i'll take "socialist totalitarian portugal" any day over the failed and corrupt state i myself live in, we have record infection rates in europe and not by coincidence. not to mention the u.s.

The same as for people with old schools "non-smart" phones (that many older people still use): it doesn't. Which just makes this whole thing even more stupid.

Plus, good luck enforcing it at all, here's a random selection of possible responses for a police officer asking to check your smartphone:

1 - "Forgot it at home".
2 - "I don't have a phone".
3 - "Forgot to charge it, has no battery".
4 - "I only have this" - show old Ericsson phone from 2003
5 - "It's up my arx and my hands are busy, feel free to go get it"

If you have a dislikeness for failed and currupt states, then I must warn you that Portugal may not be the best option for you :)

6 nurses confirmed positive, Northern hospital.
1 patient case positive after MRI from private care hospital in South. Likely outbreak there too.

It has invaded general medical staff, not just the thoracic surgery unit now.

So far, our centre is clear. Nurses were all in infection control gowns on my last callout, and they finally had the ER sliding doors fully open with the fans roaring.

I was going to reply "Well, it doesn't. That's what makes it a laughable initiative." before seeing you did already. :D

Laughs in Italian.

If they were serious about this absurdity, they'd issue phones to everyone and make carrying them compulsory, like some states do with national ID cards.

lol, i see we're a unhappy bunch here. 😅 🤭

however, data is stubborn:

you guys have really no idea. 😟 nobody in europe still grasps how deep the crap is actually running in spain, not just about the virus, but this makes the virus all the more lethal. italy and portugal might be plagued with incompetence and corruption but at the very least have a solid and generalized concept of democracy. spain is just ... still fighting for old fascist ghosts, you couldn't believe that in a regular european democracy. but there's simply nobody in control at the state level, it's a full-out war for privileges and maintaining the old order alive, even disrupting the few half-good initiatives that can happen at local/regional level.

We can add: "I can't afford to pay the last bill"

On a more hopeful note Pfizer's production line is now churning out vaccine.

November for clearance in the US after Christmas in the UK.

There should be plenty to go around since the comments are full of antivaxxers saying they'll refuse it and spreading the usual conspiracy theories.

It must be something in the mediterranean sea! But at least we have good food and weather... :D

You're worrying me a bit, as I plan to get the hell out of here forever as soon as I have made enough bank, and the islands of either Tenerife or La Palma were among my first choices for enjoying retirement and forgetting about the world :)

Now more seriously, our 3 countries have had very similar histories in the past few centuries, especially the XX's century where all 3 countries endured fascist dictatorships that only ended a few decades ago (Mussolini in Italy, Franco in Spain, Salazar in Portugal) from which we are still somewhat recovering in many ways, so maybe that is the root of our shared problems.

Regarding Covid though, Portugal has so far fared much better than Spain and Italy, and I've been wondering why. We didn't do anything special here, pretty much just the same as every other country (initial lockdown, then masks in public places), and yet we have had proportionally far less infections and casualties than both Spain and Italy. I've been trying to figure out why, but the only factors that I can come up with are our smaller population density (we only have 2 cities with >=1 million people, all others are far smaller), and the larger tourism (and more spread out) in both Spain and Italy.

Out of curiosity, why do you think Spain is taking again such a hard hit?

The granddaughter of Mussolini (a politician as well) is reportedly doing great at our local edition of "Dancing with the stars", does that count as recovering in some way? 🤭
