Death is hardly the only, or most common, long term negative outcome either, even if it's the most severe one.
Sure, but long term impact/death is more interesting in the long run, how many infected really doesn’t matter if no one is severely impacted. You could also look at the recovery numbers as they are more important or at least they need to be compared.

IFR is really difficult to know when we do not have ANY numbers re people dieing to the damage/complications caused by SARS-CoV-2 infection years later .
True to an extent, but large spikes in infections implies an increase in the proportion of people that will be severely impacted, because treatment opportunities get worse as hospitals become saturated...which is what's happening now, despite capacity increases over the last nine months, because of the sheer number of cases.
'Recoveries' are also the most loosely defined category.
My father in-law is in Wisconsin and has technically 'recovered', even though he's got lingering lung damage that might force him to retire about ten years sooner than he was planning and can still barely function at home. It's also an open question as to how many years it's knocked off his life.

Yep loads of information is now readily available to all, however critical thinking still isn't taught until university so a huge chunk of the population are incapable of their own fact checking either through being a bit dim or never being taught how. They can get suckered into all kinds of conspiracies and misinformation hence growing anti-vax sentiments and the efforts to reduce the disinformation.
Older people are vulnerable to it as they haven't grown up knowing the internet should be assumed to be wrong until proven otherwise.
Conspiracy cults are like scammers they target the vulnerable.
And, sadly social norms were more respected (not, really, but still)

To me. Even though, we have access to the thoughts and opinions, of the whole planet. Finding real facts, about such things, is really hard to achieve. Every data source of current information, has some form of bias. Historic facts are easy, last years 'facts' are easy to find, but what happened today or yesterday, always seems to have some-ones spin on it.
