The SCB (Shield Cell Bank) Thread

Excellent news that the NPCs are being steadily upgraded to use the same tools that we Humans do.

Bad news that these idiotic shield potions are now permeating every aspect of the game. I'm not going to run through why SCBs are carp, it's been done to death and I've got nothing new to add to the argument. I just wish FD would prioritize the re-working of SCBs.

The thing that annoys the crap out of me is that the afore mentioned sadistic AI devs keep trying to make the PVE experience more like PVP. Chaff and SCB spamming are a prime example.

The thing is, if I wanted a PVP experience, I would play PVP.

I do NOT want a PVP experience, I want to have fun flying around in space and shooting up bad guys.

The AI shouldn't be stupid, but they shouldn't exploit game mechanics like a ruthless human and require a PVP spike damage built to overcome.

Help with SCB's

For the record, I am not out to build an SCB ship from hell for PVP battles. My goal is to have just enough edge to be able to hi-tail it out of Dodge if need be and live to fight another day. Though I play in open I have never technically been in a PVP battle (I don't count being quickly destroyed by the CODE at Hutton on the final day) and really don't intend on it.

The SCB purchase was prompted by the new and improved 1.4 NPC's, Anaconda's in particular. They used to really be not that much of a problem to dispatch but the last two that interdicted me were quite tough. The first one was proving quite challenging and we were giving each other hell but the cops showed up and gave me the edge enough that the Anaconda waked out. The one I tangled with this morning was quite another story. I got his shields down and was giving him hell when he got my shields down and proceeded to frag me hard. I was lucky to get away with 31% hull!

So I am modifying my loadout and adding a Frag Cannon to my Large, under nose hardpoint and adding an SCB in one of my internal slots.

My real question is how do I fire off a cell? The game told me I had to assign it to a fire group but the options menu said that the fire group didn't matter, just the bound key (at least that's how I read it). I gave it a key bind and assigned it to the secondary alternate fire group as shown below. What has me concerned is that the SCB doesn't show on my HUD like all the weapons and the chaff do.

Is this going to work and fire off a cell when I hit my bound key or did I fudge something up?

I really don't want to find out at the wrong time!

As far as I know you can use with fire group or bound key, personally I have a bound key NOT assigned to a fire group.

Same as you, mainly use for escape jumpped by groups.

PvE = versus NPC, PvP=player versus player. ;)

Anyway, go to the options->controls page. You can bind chaff, heatsinks and SCB to keys so you can use them even if they are not inside a firegroup at all!

Yeah, bind it. I've got two buttons on my hotas for Chaff and SCB's. You may need to hit that SCB quick, and having to switch over to another firegroup is just an extra step to get it done.

Edited for clarity. It's been a long day. Thanks for keeping me on my toes!

So dump the fire group and just use a bound key?

That's what I'd do. It's easier, although do keep in mind that button will activate every SCB module that is online. So you can use two small SCBs instead of one bigger one and activate both with one keypress. :)

A bind key is best, but to see on the hud how many you have left, and to use in SC, just put it in an empty firegroup and don't use it.

Thanks for the help guys!

An empty fire group though? Wouldn't that be a hoot? It would be nice to have more than 2 to play with. Gimbals on one, turrets on another, kinetics on a third, etc etc.

Having trouble with SCBS?
Frag cannons, beam lasers, frag cannons, PAs, frag cannons, heat sinks, and frag cannons. With four or so hardpoints devoted to punching shields, anything below the FDL/python range should melt in ten to twenty seconds. Anything at that range or above is getting pretty expensive and deserves to be a force to be reckoned with.

These things that rarely get used because pulse pulse pulse booster booster booster your way to victory is the meta. Finally, FD is punishing these one dimensional players.

I have seen just yesterday a Cobra in a CZ firing 4 or 5 SCBs in succession. I don't even want to know how many SCBs the Anacondas are carrying…

I think they may be unlimited. I was following a python that was popping them over and over while not in combat. I figured I would wait till he stopped and pounce, but eventually he wandered into a fight and a took him out. The entire time he was popping them every 10-20 secs. I really hope him popping them constantly for no reason, and the amount was a bug.

the SCB spaming i have had no trouble dealing whit, but the chaff spam!, oh my :)
i have completely retired my gimbals now, and don't think i ever will be doing Pve in a clipper again

I haven't had trouble with chaff yet at all really. They don't actually seem to use that all that much either.

you got me curious now why we got such a different experience. where are you hunting?
so far i have mainly been in Hazard Res sites and conflict zones in Fed space, and they often been chaffing as soon as they got a new reload.
some ships i have even seen whit double chaffs.

and by the way, just to make it clear - im not complaining.
in fact i love it, feels a little bit more like pvp. :)

So basically what your saying is you NEED 4 dedicated weapon mounts to combat 1 SCB bank, and you don't see this as a problem with SCBs

I wouldn't say they're 'spamming' anything. They do use them once in awhile, but they haven't given me any real trouble, even when it was an Anaconda using them.

We're fine. People just need to learn to fly that's all.

doesnt happen because you havent seen it. Ok then!

Yep, NPCs are great now. My mining Python was attached by an NPC master fed gunship last night. She instantly opened fire and seemed to be making a proper effort to keep weapons on me, and quickly used chaff when under pressure. I still won fairly comfortably but was a little worried there for a minute!

Also was cool that I took out the power plant and she came to a full stop and just drifted there which was fun!

Didn't explode? great! I really disliked the explosion when you took out the PP, so unreal.

Yep, they don't exploed anymore when PP ist at 0%, PP seems to take more damage too. When at 0% it only has 50% power for modules left I think.
