The Smuggling discussion thread

Dont rush the entrance. Line up in Super Cruise for a frontal approach. Unlock destination. Drop out at 10km. Switch on docking computer to make fine adjustments for you then back off. Get your hardpoints out to check you are dead centre. Wait a few seconds to see what security is up to. Drop some stuff like a heat sink if you like and power some stuff down. Zip forward and drop a sink. YOu should be fine till about 4km. When you get close fire up docking computer. With security, it is all about line of site. The extra seconds you spend on this makes a clean entry. You only really need to nip in to the entrance not full speed ahead all the way like a nutter. That works for me but there are other ways, like when you see on local coms messages like "why are you scanning me officer", that's a pretty good all clear to make your move.

Thanks for your advices Ben! Smuggling in an Anaconda sounds challenging, I like it :) Just hope I won't lose too many credits in the process ;-)

Hey, no need to deploy hardpoints, you can simply enable the "mouse widget" in the controls: even if you don't use the mouse, there will be a little orange dot in the middle. Very handy in many situations!

The most important advice is:
- Have Allied / Friendly status with the stations you trade at.
Because you'll get scanned much less frequently.

Secondly, most of what Ben said - except docking computer;
- No shields anaconda, more cargo
- Heat Sinks / Chaff = good luck charm. AI Cops cheat. They can see you regardless of your 'silent running / heat sinks'.
Still it's good fun to have 4xHeat Sinks and spam it while you aproach the gate.
- Good approach, learn how to land from supercruis directly in front of the gate, 9-10kms.
- Manual docking, full control, no surprises.

Normally you get in from 'above' or 'below' the planet, ~20 degrees offset.
The gate is pointing towards the planet - however it's tilted ~20-30 degrees above/below the planet.
You can mentally learn what's up/down if you learn how the system looks while in supercruise.

Example one system:
- "two planets on the right, the sun is behind me, I should aproach above".
Then you can always align yourself in the same way, the planets to the right while you aproach your destination.
All systems looks differently, but with two system you can memorise it.

452 cargo capacity in a trading Anaconda is only beaten by the Type-9 (and I would not try to smuggle in a Space Cow!).

Getting used to the Anaconda's handling is the most important bit, for me. Judging the turns when approaching the slot at speed (although slowing down to pass through it, of course) takes a bit of practice.

Coming around the edge from the side, full speed. Go FA off and push the nose toward the slot. Once you see the outer rim of the station front edge, FA on and thrust like crazy. You should be able to get inside fairly easy. Engage DC inside the slot, takes the full length sometimes to stop.

As already mentioned. Get allied helps a lot. Usually just do a couple on donate missions.

I always drop a hs for luck about 4k out.

Heres the thing. If you get scanned so what. Some one correct me if wrong but in a conda the fine is going to be over 1mill. Its a fine so I should be able to rack up multi million pound fine by the end of the week which then goes to a bounty.

As I am aware max bounty is 1mill so trade elsewhere for a week then pay off one mill or sidewinder suicide.

Your multi million fine is now 1mill
Peanuts compared to profit for one weeks smuggling. My profit was 1.9mill per run. Awful return journey but that a diff matter.

Havent tested it but this should be the case when fd capped fines. Better still get a mate to kill you and he gets the mill

The problem for many is that goes 'against our intention' of smugling. Many of us want to stay away from such methods.
Rather, we put our pride in doing it without getting scanned.

Just a matter of personal preference of course.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts!
How do you deal with the recent ramming system? Since rushing and crushing a little Hauler at the mail slot would give you an insta bounty (and station opening fire at you), aren't you worried about that? Has this never happened to you?
I'm not going to tell you that can't happen because obviously it's possible, only that it's never happened to me. Mostly because I don't crash into the mail slot like a maniac, I'm usually just above 100m/s and slowing down at that point. Other than that, pretty much exactly what Panzertard said. The only difference is I do use a docking computer, but I only activate it after I've entered the station. Gives me some time to plot the next route and catch up on chat.

Why FA off?

It's simple and FUN!

Note, this is not the route to do anymore, but the basics remain the same!

Haven't had a problem smuggling in the mighty Space Cow.Only had two fines for trying to get illicit cargo into a station, both times during the recent CG for Battle Weapons. The first was strange as the scanning notification never appeared on my approach into the slot, just the fine. The second was down to me making a complete balls up on my approach, I wasn't aligned to begin with and over shot on my 90 degree turn to try to get in. Needless to say I kissed the station below the toast grill and in my panic to get away from the station ended up having a battle with the docking computer as it tried to kick in a number of times. Thinking to myself that that was close and surprised not to have been scanned, the scan warning showed up!All I do is boost and make a fast approach, then when around 3 km left to run go 4 pips to Sys and ease off slightly. Once in the station, throttle fully off and let the docking computer make my landing.A rewarding feeling selling my 496 Tonnes of goods on the Black Market

I only smuggle with the Anaconda. And when you are able to fly straight and fast towards the station there is little risk to be scanned.

About not paying the fee: well sooner or later you have a wanted status there, this means you are a big target for many players in open. But probably you don't fly in open, then nobody really cares...

Despite what some say, the Anaconda is easy to pilot through the mail-slot once you are familiar with the handling and bridge position. Not kidding; easy. (A good joystick or HOTAS makes it trivial).

I haven't smuggled anything yet, but trust me, I'm practicing coming in hot and can get in without scraping shields at full song. The main issue is being assigned a docking pad close to the slot - you often overshoot inside the station and have to reverse up a fair bit.

I get scanned about 1 in 5 docking runs, and most of the time those scans complete. With illegal cargo, that means a fine, and a big one for all 452 tonnes - can someone elighten us as to how much (say slaves etc)

Hope that helps... I'm looking into smuggling too!

- Heat Sinks / Chaff = good luck charm. AI Cops cheat. They can see you regardless of your 'silent running / heat sinks'.

The AI does not detect you on sensors if you are very cold/silent, until you are extremely close.

Passing in front of AI with a cold/silent ship and having it approach to within detection/scanning range is not a cheat; they have "eyes" and should.

You can follow 1km behind an AI security ship that would otherwise immediately try to scan you, if you are silent, if never pass in front of it's cockpit, and it will never know you were there.

Better still get a mate to kill you and he gets the mill

Borderline exploitative, and not something I'd do regardless. I don't willingly lose ships.

Why FA off?

The Anaconda moves bizarrely well with FA Off. It's literally the only ship I've flown (and I've flown them all) that I can consistently turn better with FA Off than with FA On and vertical/lateral thruster use.

Assuming you line up with the mail slot at ~6km out, you don't need to turn. You just boost and make very minor adjustments as you slide through the mail slot at a comfortable 220 ms. Even with FA off turning around in front of the mail slot (ie where police might scan you) will take considerably longer than being correctly aligned before you enter the area where police scan you.

Well, it works and its lucrative! :D

Found a 2-jump 4,311cr/ton route (just under 2Mcr per round trip) with stations only 250ls from the star at both ends. Almost 10Mcr/hr.

Hostile space, but its just netting me additional merits on top of the profit.

Beats running the palladium and consumer goods I had before any day!

Smuggled in an Anaconda many times. Just use heat sinks to help get in the slot before a scan finishes.

can't you use HEAT SINKS to not show up on radar? Approaching wisely using 4 Heat sink charges worked well for me... or was it just LUCK?!
