Hey man, like working at a barista all day is hard work ok? I burnt myself on the milk-foamer.

Jeez, I'm just like... trying to pay off my student loans for post-modernist english 17th century goth poetry degree. Hater.

Come here, I'll give you a hug, everythings going to be ok, one day you might get a proper job too.

You seem to be ignoring that something doesn't need to be 100% effective to be effective.

A bullet-proof vest doesn't cover your entire body. Yet, police and armed forces still have this crazy habit of wearing them. Why? Because if it can stop one bullet hitting a vital organ, it has done its job.

It could be argued that stopping (delaying/whatever) one opposing PP player makes a difference. Albeit very small. And timezones/play times are irrelevant because those are not limited to players supporting one faction.

Even if the only different is that a PP player has to be a little bit more careful in carrying out an otherwise non-PvP mission because of the threat of opposing PP players - an effect has been made.

Until the knowledge of how to manipulate the matchmaking becomes widespread. ED was never meant to lock players in Open, and its technical choices reflect this. People are able to manipulate the game into greatly decreasing the chance of ever meeting someone else in Open by actions as simple as watching Netflix at the same time, depending on their connection speed.

And EVE has had no where near the number of active subscriptions that WoW has.

That number (500K subscribers) was EVE's highest number of subscribers during its lifetime. WoW's peak subscribers was 12M players, or about 24x more than EVE, so the difference is even greater than what you posted.

No surprise you don't know vintage 70s music! Jeez your such a main-stream hack! You don't get me!

I always wondered why my marvelous rendition of The Knife by Genesis on the Stylophone never got the recognition it deserved for it's sheer brilliance. It's just too far ahead of the modern audience I guess. I'll try playing it over comms in Open. I'll either get a huge wave of new followers, or an instance on my own ;)

still eve and wow isnt even near to compare their subs lol... different games totally

I got distracted and forgot to answer some of you - sorry folks.

I've got to tell my daughters they cannot play anymore, I'll suffer for that one.... no bacon for me :(
Though my 3yr old is mental, she'd like killing zombies with her mother.
And my 7yr old is a Disney princess fan and animal lover, so princess pets on my phone should quell her temper for a little while.

;)

I hope that beard conforms to "real man" standards and not hipster!? ;)

Also, Stephen Fry is a national treasure! And QI is a great show, though I self identify with Alan Davis more than anyone else :p

only image that comes to mind is your daughter with the hammer and that loook....

plus Stephen Fry is awesome

I agree with most of what you said Mike, except I don't think a "locked" open mode works, mainly because people do swap around..and have many valid reasons why they play open and other modes as well.

neither do I but as a purely optional mode for those who insist that good players must be locked in open, I thought it may offer a compromise.

I don't think that it has ever been argued otherwise.

I'm not sure to tell you the truth. There's obviously one camp who agrees. The topic keeps on coming up again and again, eventually to be merged into these threads. So I would think that people seem to pick up on it from time to time. I don't know if I've ever read an actual agreement from the other camp though. Maybe I missed it or have forgotten it. It generally gets drowned in...

Working as intended. All modes are equal and valid - FD said so. You can just hack the network anyway. Modes are there by design. This is gameplay we were promised. Mode switching / same BGS is core game feature. I didn't pay for that. Can't force me into that. If they change it I'll leave! It's been that way from the start - not going to change now. It doesn't work anyway. Instancing. Stupid pirates at Hutton. Hahaha. PvPers just want to shoot everyone. PP isn't PvP. 32 players. CG isn't PvP. Timezones. ED wasn't supposed to be PvP. They can just grind in Solo too. You can't lock people into modes. I didn't pay for that! Did I say that one already? Oh, and how dare I suggest that FD communicate about it.

Seperate but complete background sims for each mode would be the bees knees for everyone but Frontier. The BGS, with it's accompanying Galnet is expensive to run. The man hours alone would probably shock most forum readers. While it might be more fair, it would be prohibitively expensive, that's why the idea keeps getting shot down. It's not that anyone would be opposed to it on the basis of fairness, but because we see how the diversion of resources from development to maintaining a second BGS would be a loss for everyone.

I agree with you (as I have stated earlier). I'm against a change to modes/BGS for these and other reasons.

It would be *very* interesting to see what the population of such a locked-in Open mode (that still shared the same single galaxy state) would be. I don't think it would be as high as those who want to play in such a mode might hope....

Don't, I'm still having nightmares.
Even the most jovial people I know, who think everything she does is "cute", looked at the picture and turned white.

I should edit it to add "No open only mode" on the picture.......

hmmmm......

AFK a while :D

You can absolutely 100% guarantee that it will be smaller than Open currently is, as I'm not the only player that chooses Open by default unless RL technical limitations prevent that (hotel wifi et al) or sometimes chooses to play with friends in specific Private Groups.

The technicality is what you are choosing to ignore though.

I don't think I'm ignoring it. Perhaps "technically" was the wrong word to use? I can't think of the proper one at the moment if I got it wrong.

There are flaws that interfere with Open working as it should (for the purposes of competitive gameplay). These are unfortunate, they exist, and I'm not ignoring them. However, if every one of those problems were somehow magically resolved, mode switching would still remain as an in-game "flaw". If everyone had perfect (fast/reliable) network connections, perfect software, reliable power supply, all played at the same time, and whatever other issue there may be... switching to Solo for the purpose of avoiding PvP threat remains as a difference.

I don't see instancing (excluding networking issues) as being a problem. Players are just grouped into small chunks. A war is rarely fought on one battlefield.
