Private Groups are not an open-access, advertised on the start menu, alternative to Open.

But still, it allows people to play together while excluding others.
"Shadowbanning Griefers etc." is technically just another private group implementation, the difference is that it is managed by FD.

Except for the single player offline mode, FD has all game modes in place:
I can play by myself (PvE) I can play with everyone (Open) including the ones that grief me, or I can play with others and exclude the people I don't like (Group)

That's already implemented. It's called: Group mode.

Group mode can be many things. And you have to search for the PVE groups hoping you get a real PVE group. The Mode, would give people the choice from the start.

Yes you can and it is a great thing, but not everyone who wants group PVE knows about the groups.

Nope, he's not insecure, just tired of those who equate actions in a video game to things like, "brave" and "Cowardice" when the twits using those words have very little understanding on what they mean.

Just like if I want to spend time thinking about tactics, I'll load up an RTS.

And that is the beauty of ED, I can relax in it with like minded people. Just like to can go pew pew all you like with like minded people.
It has something for everyone.

I don't know, I see the use of coward or whatever as more of a friendly taunt in video game land, I don't take it personally.
The hardcore PVP gamers are always going to look at themselves as "Elite gamers" or "better gamers" than the non PVP crowd. I am not saying that as one or that that is the case but just how they seem to view themselves.
I play a lot of different genre's of video games and there is certainly an element that just seems to want to grief and cause difficulty to other players even when there is no benefit to themselves. This game is no different, picking on a type 6.7.9. whatever with a fully loaded out combat ship is not PVP it is just bullying! PVP is player vs player where you would want to prove your the best player vs an equally equipped but hopefully not equally skilled opponent hence the need for a PVE/ non bully mode. To make matters worse I guarantee you 90% of the bullies farmed their credits in solo mode only to claim the praises of PVP after they have gotten themselves all kitted up with the best combat ships and gear. IF they want to be the shark they should have to grow up in shark infested waters IMO. You pick PVP or PVE and that mode is where your ships and credits stay, if you want to change modes, earn it all again on the appropriate mode. Personally I have logged 300+ hours of well I will call it grinding as I can't really call it gameplay mostly in open and I trade using a highly profitable route found on a third party game tool so I can only assume it is a commonly used trade route and I have only been griefed once by another player. So in my personal experience the griefing hasn't been a huge problem.

We didn't at first, but after 3 months of it being every other post from the same people, it became irritating - that was last March.
And then for a short space of time it became bannable for it.

Funny how those same people freak out if you throw griefer in their face - bit of the old if you cannot take it / don't shovel it.

I'd hope that it would stop, but it seems some folks just won't let it go and want to prove why an Open PvE is needed, because they just want to be children throwing insults.

Those same bullies as you put it, usually also refer to everyone who doesn't play in their pond or who runs from them cowards, and they are not meaning it in a friendly way. I've blown up on one of the people who loved to throw the word around at people who didn't play the game his way, especially after he claimed to be ex military.

I wish I was English like my hero Tj.
Please stay on the topic of the game modes. Personal comments about military service are getting a bit too off-topic in here and are derailing the discussion. Thanks.

But I don't care either way - real or not.

Just remember everyone on the internet is a former soldier, experienced game programmer, developer, professional critic, moderator on another message board, with years of experience doing everything else ever thought of.
We are never short of an expert in anything ;)

It does seem that way! Ah, bless 'em all I say.

On the topic of Solo vs Open vs Groups (which is the title of the thread):
My personal opinion is that although there's always "room for improvement" when it comes to risk/reward compensations, all three modes should be kept available, and others should stop trying to pigeonhole everyone else into what their personal "preference" is. (not just in this game, but in all games)
Everyone who pays for this game pays to enjoy it in their own way, not just yours- and no matter how many whine threads you start, they're not going to completely revamp it just to cater to your playstyle. (by all means, keep beating this poor dead horse if you like, but do remember the definition of insanity...)

With respect to the different modes and suggested improvements/incentives- I do agree that if you choose Open vs Solo your rewards should be equal to those you would obtain for NPC kills of the same flavor- perhaps it should be based on a scale comparable to difficulty (pilot rating) and ship type (cost of the hull, etc.) so that if you take out a player in Open it would be the same as if you performed an NPC kill mission in Solo, etc. As to Group- I have not yet personally experienced it so I have no feedback on it. (I can't really speak for something which I have no actual experience on) I also have to agree that the Bounty System could possibly use work- however, in order to prevent people from exploiting this system there needs to be safeguards. EVE failed horribly at this- there's really no incentive whatsoever to participate in it, and it's actually more beneficial to people to be a pirate (which is why most are drawn to that as a style) than to hunt bounties.

And it seems there's always a couple of people in any bunch that spoil it for everyone else, and in terms of "risk/reward" the same holds true here, too. I think with any solutions being suggested- this should also be kept in mind.

Exactly - there's no "honor" running down a noob Sidewinder or unarmed traders. Pirating, yes; wholesale slaughter, no.

I've been playing since September 2014 or something like that. I actually always played open yet didn't see many people. Today was the second time I got interdicted in my T6. I instantly submitted to the interdiction to have a headstart to frameshift again (I already had another system set up as target, just in case this happened) but I got shot to oblivion within seconds (<10) *before I was able to control my ship again* through shield boosters and A3 shields, Which means a) there is some super great Frameshift Interdictor somewhere out there who will mess up your target's ship but leave your ship in full control or b) someone was cheating. There were no comms nor scanning (not that he would have had any time for it). Just as a frame of reference, I was carrying ore I had mined in the last 1 hour or so, so it is not like I had anything of value, not was I going to put much of a fight anyway ... not armed with two mining lasers.
Anyway .. my point is : this was the last time I played open. I might check out one of the bigger PVE groups or just play solo. I don't mind being interdicted, nor with a fair fight and I'm even okay with being interdicted in my unarmed T6 if everybody plays fair. But being just destroyed without having *any* chance to fight back or escape, despite the fact that the game, as I have experienced it so far, would normally give me a slight time advantage was annoying and actually boring, and I don't play Elite : Dangerous to be annoyed and bored.

This thread's twin was merged into the threadnaut, but this one must have been missed.

And now in stereo... <sniggers>

Could be kinda interesting if there was a bonus to playing in open, and it actually would be quite interesting if it was tied into how long you've been playing in open rewarding you, but only up to a certain point, say maybe:

2+ hours in open: 5% bonus
rising by 1% every hour you are in open after that until 15%?
if you log into solo/group resets
and of course doesn't increase if you just are sitting idle at a station or such, but only actually flying about outside no fire zones?
