Well that is because to some Open is the only mode that has any merit and it is painful to read the crap posted in an effort to "justify it".

I don't see any restriction on criticism of the game design - I see opposition to parts of the criticism.
In your *opinion*, Solo detracts from Open, other opinions vary.
The three game modes, single shared galaxy state and mode switching are the game. These core features have been in the game design for well over two and a half years. The game launched with these core features over eight months ago. Yet still posters new and old expect that Frontier will change the game to suit a play-style that favours direct competition and those seeking change don't seem to understand why there is resistance to the proposals.

Now here is one of the more sensible positions argued by solo/group players. It doesn't take a thing away from open but raw ganking & spoilsports. We advance this position in an attempt to help open players, because we do think more people might want to be in open if there were real consequences for out-and-out murder & mayhem and salty tears and all that crap.
I don't know why the Pilots Federation is not one of the, if not the, "Power" because without pilots, you're isolated, alone & will turn into a forgotten world somewhere off the galaxy's trade lanes. I would like to see the PF handing out sanctions and "pulling the license" of malcontents for varying (increasing) reasons, with the local Feds or Navy to back it up. It would bring ED into accord with many of the space games I've played.

This is a nice idea and I can see nothing in it which would detract from open, unless it's detracting nasty & antisocial gamers.

Nothing wrong with declarations of war and owned systems - IF it remains between player groups and they don't affect "civilians" (normal, non group players). If done right and sensible it adds a lot to the fun and flavor of Open Mode.
Open Mode could be very cool if PvP had some sort of meaning and in-game reason, but sadly it's mostly seal clubbing for the fun of it and some poorly made up excuses using a completely unbalanced game that was designed for PvE and not PvP. That the Clipper is one of the preferred PvP ships tells a lot about the broken state of PvP in this game.
The whole Solo vs. Open discussion is more or less meaningless as PvP itself is meaningless. We can come up with a lot of nice ideas how more players could be motivated to go Open Mode or how to balance Solo and Open mode. It won't change anything unless PvP itself is fixed.
The sad part is, that I see absolutely no indication that FD has a clue about PvP or any interest in fixing the obvious problems. The bounty fix in 1.3 is a good example, it made thing worse instead of fixing anything. Before 1.3 a bounty had a small effect, now it's completely irrelevant. It doesn't matter if somebody has a bounty or not. FD has no clue how to make a multiplayer PvP game. Partly I agree with Roybe on that - it would be better if FD simply removed PvP, it would be honest.
(I don't have high hopes for CQC for that reason, FD doesn't understand PvP)
I want people to play where they will have fun, if we can make open more dynamic and realistic and that brings some back to open it is a good thing, if people still want to go to solo, or to Open-PVE that is good too.

NPC Clippers are nasty.. don't' even want to think about a seal clubbing one..
Honestly? NPC asps and vipers are more 'nasty' than any clipper I've ever fought. Since a conflict zone opened up in my "home" system recently, I've been shooting a lot of those dirty rebel clippers. It's the unique nature of PvP that makes those clippers nasty, yet only truly as "clubbers" and not really as full-on combat ships.

But if you do, you expect repercussions and that is how open should be. I am with Sysmon. I am not a fan of magic flags either and invincibility, even though I never PvP, turning off player damage would affect me anyway as policing my fire around friendlies is an interesting part of the dogfighting mechanic imo.
iracing does not actively stop car collisions but at the same time deliberately ramming will get you in trouble, but to take collisions out and make everyone ghosts would have a huge negative impact on the game imo.
keep all the FF and potential to gank in, just make the punishments fit the crime.

This may or may not be true, but that is the game you bought I am afraid. ED is NOT built around being a PvP game. Sure you can play it that way if you really want to, but that is not the focus of the game in imo it is unfair of anyone to demand changes to make it so. it is primarily a PvE game with some PvP elements put in there if you WANT to participate in them. CQC may be the answer for some, however for those who do not want fair and consensual PvP then I do not think (at least I hope not anyway) that ED will ever be that game.
I would have bought ED if it had been pure PvE but no way on this earth would I have bought it if it had been built around PvP. That is just not elite imo.
Take GTA games..... sure they have MP in there now, and I may even dabble with it from time to time, but for me GTA is all about the PvE. More and more games are going competative MP PvP.
look at games like COD, back in the day they were fantastic PvE experiences but they get diluted down year on year till you end up with a 5 or 6 hr campaign and that is your lot. ED is fantastic in that sense that it still offers loads to the player not bothered about competitive PvP and for me the ability to see other like minded players and play together is the cherry on the icing on the cake.

For me and my Eagle.. clippers are nasty enough. Vipers I can usually tangle with if solo. I may, I wish I had more time for gaming would love to spend days ingame instead of a few hours a week at the moment.. but got my funds and lifetime bought.. am happy ^,^

Condor: agility and speed
Sidewinder: tank
Oh I'm not going to PVP.. I just had a thought about someone trying to take an Canda or something in and was trying to remember what could and couldn't go in . It makes me wonder how long until the threads railing about it is unfair they can't take their A modded Conda, Asp, or Python in.
