Yaffle's eye will be twitching, methinks!

I see a lot of 'music to play the game to' threads in the main forum - we should have a sub-forum specifically for music.

Crikey, there's a discussion to be had about that, amigo! <chuckles>

Always welcome, people have different tastes in music. I like some more modern stuff, but admit most of my favorites are older 20th century songs.

Sure, just start a thread in the correct sub forum, this is a discussion about group mode..

We have pages in this thread devoted to a name for a down time thread from here......

We still cannot come up with a name.

Also, must there be a set topic, or can we have a no topic thread to just go nuts in? (within the no bad words / no insults etc.. rules)

For those confused as to what we are talking about.... it is one of the best songs ever done, in my opinion at least.

Great song, when I saw "official" in the title I listened to it again, damn to, time to go play :).

Oh no, not getting into music discussions with you :D, I know when I am gonna lose. I am high waking out of this one ;).

Quick on topic question that I have been mulling over.

The change to the shield cells heat and the module warm up period when you switch them on.

FD have said it was to get people to use the cells as they intended them to be used, it would seem a lot of people don't like it pre testing. https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php?t=199155

Now I read some posts in the Beta threads too that said FD had over done it with the heat etc, I will try to take a look later in game.

Do you think this is just FD being FD, remember the "great gimbal debate" in Beta, they went from one extreme to the other. Do they want to make fights over quicker, balance things they think are OP or something else.

If its to stop cell spamming it will speed up fights, which will reduce PVP fighting time per rebuy / win.

I might be squinting a bit, but does anyone else see this as a minor shift away from PVP (now we have CQC for that). Making PVP more costly / dangerous.

That old "rare and meaningful" keeps rattling around in my head, I suppose we have it in a way in private groups but I thought that quote referred to open, if someone can point me to the "rare and meaningful" quote I would appreciate it, I would like to read it again in context.

In my Python I now have 2 SCB (before the AI got better 1 was enough), they are small and I fire them together (if shields charged a bit quicker 1 would still be enough), normally when running away and not firing so heat is lower, for pew pew's they will be using them whilst they are still fighting and generating heat.

TLDR

Do you think the changes to shield cells are FD getting back to the original plan of "rare and meaningful" or something else?

Solo mode must be abolished and everybody is happy.

I doubt Frontier can even do this.

Technical reason: you can't remove instancing because having a single server for a fast-paced game with players from all around the world would require faster than light networking. Unless you think regularly having the same kind of lag you get when connecting to a server on the opposite side of the world is acceptable. Moving the game to a client-server architecture would, thus, require spreading servers across the globe in order to minimize latency, creating geographically-bound instances, with the side effect of segregating players across geographical lines.

Logical reason: if groups are still available, players can just make a private group of one, which is the equivalent of Solo. And without a complete change to how networking works they can't prevent players from blocking everyone else in Open anyway.

Legal reason: if they remove an advertised feature they run the risk of having to refund players that purchased the game for that feature; the game is, after all, even now also sold as a single-player game. Also, due to the game's European PEGI7 rating, if they were to make the game Open-only they would have to make sure all human interaction in game, including chat, is appropriate for a 7 years old child, something I expect would displease many Open proponents.

Yes i know, the Space is really big. But if you are in a wing and want a combat with another wing and they dont meet each other, than it is a problem.
The game was never supposed to be about PvP. Meeting others was always supposed to be rare. Though making it easier for players that do want to meet to do so would be welcome.

And it is another problem, if a clan wants take effect on a minor faction in a system and other player in other instances or modi are able to prevent this. It is a fight against an invisible enemy
In a way, intended. The core ideas of the game's multi-player, as stated ever since the beginning of the Kickstart over three years ago, are that all players influence the same events and galaxy simulation — explicitly including Solo players — and that players are able to choose who they will meet in the game, explicitly including the possibility of choosing to never meet anyone else.

I see it as possible taking away a abuse mechanic and making it more inline with what they probably intended them to be.

they are small and I fire them together

You may want to rethink that. You will get the +Heat from both at the same time (it stacks).
Though a pre-emptive Heat Sink and another right after should help - it would still be risky.

This change seems to have some* PvPers going crazy in other threads. One SCB thread was locked for folks to "cool off" while another has been heavily monitored.
I've seen posts going missing all over tonight on this issue.

It's funny how if you speak in support of the change you get told to go back to Solo mode (I found that rather amusing) - so when you test it and draw your own conclusions, don't forget only Solo Mode players are allowed to dislike them. Everyone else HAS to support the old broken version.

(* = there seems to be a divide in the PvP community over the change, those who depend on SCBs are reacting strongly while others are embracing the change)
