Modes The Solo vs Open vs Groups Thread - Part the Second [Now With Added Platforms].

Yes, in WoW you can choose either PvP or PvE, either way you are playing with others though. And you can't just switch your character from a PvP server to a PvE one on a whim. Yes, you can transfer your character between the two, but it costs like $10, takes processing time, and there are limitations on how many times you can transfer. In ED, you can go from Open to Solo on a whim and without cost or consequence.

If ED would make a PvP server, where you can be attacked at anytime, and a PvE server, where you can only be attacked if flagged, and make each of them separate servers, that would be totally fine. If you want, you could transfer your stuff from one to another, but for a cost and a cooldown associated with it. So instead of Open and Solo mode, we have PvP and PvE mode. I would be fine with that.

Well I'm sorry but this isn't the case. With ED you are completely within your rights to switch when, and how often you want. This is just the way the game is, and has been design from day one. This is the way the game was kick started, funded, and ultimately finished. All the original supporters finalized this design.

Are you a Kick Starter/ Pledger?

It works very very well, as a matter of fact I personally believe it is the fundamental reason the game is becoming quite a hit. Many Many players put a high value on this feature.

You may not like it, but it's brilliant design. Everyone gets what they want, when they want it, including you. All you have to do is go play your chosen mode, and just ignore the other two modes.

I'll say this one more time FD, and David Braben are committed in making a game that anyone can enjoy, not just the open fan boys, and this is great. There also very committed to making sure only the PVP fan boys dominate the game with there group specific wisdom.

I suggest you get use to the idea, I believe it's here to stay.

Time for a new tack.

"Come join us in open - it's safer."

Judging by my experiences (in Mobius) the other day, I think you might be right. I reckon there are enough newer players there that I wouldn't have to worry about the likes of those two wings of NPCs out for my blood. Very tense and I really neither need nor want another heart attack. Once was enough, believe me.

No wonder I'm now back out in the Black, 1000LY from the bubble in my stripped down hauler (aka Sick Transit). Or is that cheating now, because nobody knows where (or in which mode) I am?

NPCs don't grief they have no motivation to upset players.

Never underestimate SJA and her minions.... :)

Well if this game wants to classify itself as an MMO, it should take some pointers from other successful MMOs. Fine, some veteran Elite players still see this as a single player game, but I want it to be more than that. I want it to overcome WoW as the most popular MMO ever (even though that will never happen).

You don't know that, your just trying to support your agenda. This game was never intended to be just like any other game, and will not be like the others.

No, I just started playing this game a few weeks ago on a friend's suggestion. I know there was a particular vision going in and I know that my ideas probably will never be implemented exactly as I want. But I can at least come on the forums and voice my opinion in hopes that it may shape the game going forward to some extent, assuming the devs actually sift through all this stuff :)

I suspect that they are programmed to give the average player a run for their money, and not have them destroy every PC in sight all the time. You would have to ask Sarah Jane Avory, she knows, but probably wouldn't tell.

She did mention in passing that part of her task was to ensure that the ranking of NPCs was reflected in their combat style and abilities. Can't find the post, sorry. Everything I saw before heading back into the Black suggests that this is already happening, though no doubt there will be plenty of behind the scenes tweaks to come.

All seems fine in the galaxy to me.

Given the fact that there are well in excess of 500,000 copies sold, to hope that Frontier would change the game to suit one player (or 100, or even 1,000) would seem a little ambitious....

SJA also mentioned something about a balance pass too - presumably to make sure that most players are not overwhelmed by the leet NPC combat skillz! ;)

You see I'm fine with you voicing your opinion. It's the you can't do this, or you can't do that that simply isn't true for this game that I'm taking issue with mate. When you obviously can. I played EvE for 10+ years, retired with three titans still on the books, (really couldn't care less if you don't believe me).

I also run a couple of gaming servers, DayZ, and Firefall. I also intend to run a private Star Citizen server when it's mad available. I know pretty much exactly what you want, I do plenty of PVP in other games. DayZ, and PS2. Ever want to find me to teach me a lesson, look on PS2, connery server on Friday nights. I'm Vanu. Look for "Woodcock". That's me in all my glory.

I still love this game and the way it's set up, and very much enjoy playing in my group, and solo. I have never liked mixing PVE with PVP on one server. I have never felt like this is a valid combination, and always allows players to bully other players, I think David Braben feel the same way. David Braben is the man. If you persuade him well you have what you want. I have plenty of games to play, I really don't even need this one. So if it changes I have plenty of other places to land.

Important rules for this thread

The forum rules apply as usual in this thread, but we'd like to highlight some specific points:

  • Stay polite and topic. Baiting, insulting or swearing will result in a direct infraction. No warnings, no nice private messages. Baiting includes dead horse references, use of the words "easy mode" or "carebear", accusations of griefing, and picture spam.
  • Please do not indulge in pejorative comments about players from *any* of the platforms on which the game has been, or will be (or even might be), released

I'm not questioning that she has the ability to do it but I'm confident that Frontier wouldn't aim to deliberately grief their players with NPCs. :)

I agree absolutely. But getting a good tie-in between NPC rating and NPC ability seems like a good way to go and always considering the likely ability levels of commanders. With my abilities I should fear an Elite NPC. At launch (or just after, once I'd found my space legs again) I found I had no need to worry at all, faced with NPCs. Now I need to be more careful and more selective in my decision making. For me that makes for a better game.
