So, serious question... to all the guys here that like and use the ability to duck into solo when they want a "no risk" evening of play... what is it exactly that you are doing in-game at that time? Are you exploring? Trading? RESing? And also... where are you at IN the game? In other words, are you rocking a stacked Anaconda? Or are you newer to the game?

I expect that they're doing what they want to do, in an environment where they know that their enjoyment of the game cannot be impaired by other players. Also, Solo is hardly "no risk" - I expect that SJA has plenty of statistics to draw from as to who was destroyed by which NPC(s) and in which mode.

it is? o.0 Doesn't it just mean somebody that wants an easy game with no consequences? I didn't know you couldn't use that term here. Sorry, I didn't read post #1 on this thread.

First off, every time I heard care bear it meant you were a PvEer and the PVPers used the term against you in a derogatory meaning because "you were not a manly because didn't want to fight".

Second off, where is this "easy game with no consequences" at? because there is no mode like that in Elite Dangerous.

Last Solo play for me was in a conflict zone in a system two jumps from Founders World. Anaconda, A-Specced, 8 shield boosters, large pulses, huge gimballed cannon, and multicannon turrets. One shield cell bank and a fuel scoop. Top class shield of course.

My last big solo before that? I was flying in from some deep space exploration, with masses of data. I was in a shieldless D-Specced Asp that I didn't want to risk getting smashed to pieces on my way to a station, so yes I kept to solo to minimize the risk. I make no apologise for that - I spent hours and hours out doing that, and if someone attacked for "teh lulz!!1!", destroying all of those hours at a whim, for non-gameplay related reasons (you can't pirate or collect exploration data), I'd have been ticked. I didn't ruin anyone elses game by doing that.

What is an end-game ship? I've been in an Asp for yonks now, don't want anything else for the foreseeable future - so thats end game for me. I might go back to my Combat Hauler, which is also an end-game ship for me. There is no linear progression as such in Elite - one ship is not intrinsically more of a winner than any other, and the game doesn't finish when you get an Anaconda.

I think you mean DarkWalker, I couldn't care less what an MMO is, I bought this game because I could play it alone or with my friends without it having to be an MMO. ;)

Me too (again). It fits my needs and (dis)abilities just fine. When I want PvP and feel physically up to it I play World of Tanks and really enjoy it (got a brand new ISU-122S needs taking for a spin or two tomorrow; do like my Soviet TDs) but for for long term, consequence filled game play, on my own or otherwise, ED is perfect for me just as it is.

Second question, If you ARE newer (not new.. but not end-game ships either). What do you plan on doing in the game after you have accrued millions with all the ships? Maybe after you have already explored, and have already have massed a fortune trading.... What will you be doing in the game?

First of all I don't "duck into Solo" I play Solo most of the time because I'm an introvert and I need time away from social interaction (particularly interaction I can't control/predict) in order to recharge. When I don't play Solo I play group with one or both of two friends who play Elite. I'm not avoiding risk - I often take on an SSS alone in my Vulture, I never win, sometimes I run away, sometimes I go down fighting. It's no big deal, I don't do it without insurance.

I do a little bit of everything. I haven't got around to piracy or mining yet, but it's on my to-do list.

To be perfectly honest though I've very much lost faith/motivation in the game after Power Play. Each update since release (I bought the game a little after Wings I think) has added features that I have no interest in. Not interested in CG, it's clumsy, competitive and immersion breaking grind. I was looking forward to PP but it didn't add anything for me. More grind, less lore. And then CQC. Not at all the direction I'm interest in. I'm not playing but I'm reluctant to give up entirely. My answers are as though I was still playing, my philosophy of how I play/would play the game is unchanged.

I have a few Sidewinders, a Cobra, an Asp and a Vulture. All close to being maximised for their roles. I'm middle rank of each of the three Elite ranks. Second highest Fed rank, none in Empire. I have no interest in accruing millions. I have no interest in an Anaconda. I like the ships I have and they do everything I need. Not interested in grind, I just potter about do what I fancy and go where the winds of whim take me. I make money along the way incidentally to whatever I do.

Ok. I'll try and answer your question.

I do not 'duck into solo', I play pretty much exclusively Mobius, and am happy to chat with the odd CMDR if and when I see one. I am there not because there is risk / no risk (as I have said, plenty of ways to die in game without being shot), but because I have no interest in PvP. I am not new to the game, have been playing since Beta, and I don't have a stacked Anaconda, or any kind of Anaconda. I actually have a number of different ships that I use for different things, such as a Vulture for RES farming (oops, sorry, bounty hunting), and an Asp that I am in right now doing a bit of exploring. I also like to try out other ships, and sometimes I'll buy them, sometimes not.

There is no real endgame in Elite, so I'll just go on playing until I lose interest. What I am looking forward to are more interesting and engaging missions. I am happy to engage in combat but as I said, I have no interest in PvP, certainly not non consensual PvP.

Basically, I'll be having fun, or I won't be playing, but all in all I played Frontier for many years off and on, so I doubt I'll lose interest here as long as FD keep adding engaging content.

I play mainly in Groups, though recently been getting micro stutter and only seem to get smooth game play in Solo (really annoying when my gaming community are having pirating or bounty hunting nights and I cannot join in).

When I'm in normally, under Groups I'm either at a RES in my Scout with firends, trading in my T9 with friends or mining in my Asp alone.

Please note, two of those included "friends" - not random strangers I don't want to waste my time on.
See, my gaming time, is mine - not yours. You want me in your game, buy me a new computer, buy me a copy of ED and pay me a salary to play it.

As for your second question, I like messing with ship configs and am forever changing what equipment I have.
Soon I'm trying a T9 miner or a combat Asp - not decided which yet.
As I get further into the game, the more weird and wonderful the configs will be.

I expect that they're doing what they want to do, .
Not really looking for an obtuse answer... more of a literal one.

The reason for my question is relevant. I ask, because in the first few months I played this game.. I think I was similar. I really didn't want that hostile interaction. I wanted to put around... explore the pretty stars, trade back and forth 1000 times to get into that next ship, fight at some res sites against a wave of wanted NPCs.. etc. But at some point, seemingly all by itself, I eventually got to a point where I didn't need money any more, and I wanted to move on to something more exciting. I started player BHing, and Pirating. And while this is WAY more exciting (now that the joy of the other stuff has worn off a bit), I started to realize that the moving back and forth from open to solo, AND combat loggers... REALLY ruin this "end game" play style that I, and others I play with, have found ourselves in.

I wonder, because I suspect that at some point... players that are still in that previous mind set will eventually be looking for more themselves. They will settle into open looking for more excitement and that next level of play... only to be discouraged themselves that other CMDRs are pulling their plugs and ducking into solo. Eventually you end up with solo being predominantly traders/miners/explorers.... and open being predominantly pirates and player BHers. I guess I just don't see the value in the natural split.

Sorry to all, I truley meant no harm to anybody.. no insults intended. I just think I am one of those players that LOVES the CMDR interaction, whether benign or hostile... (sometimes I am the hostile)... and the experience for somebody like me is painfully lacking. I guess I would just love to see all CMDRs together!

Well this question is a negative one mainly because at no point in any mode, is it a "no risk" game. I known what your trying to insinuate but you fail at it. Nice try at baiting though.. but don't think your supposed to be doing that.

What ever I want. Maybe I will settle down and marry the princess and rule the empire with my uberness. My question is why do you care? Again this feels like a bait question.

I can't help but feel your trying to lead and bait someone to say they may try PVP so you can go "AH HAH! See.. this is why Solo is evil and Open is the only right way to play they grind in solo to get all the ships then they come into open to try to fight with us. " because this has been stuck in your, and some others throats since you started posting. That people can swap modes.. and that it is some evil underhandedly dastardly evil ability.

I neither duck anything nor is there no risk. And I do the exact same thing I would do in open. Its the same content, you know, theres no secret content or anything like this.

As for what I do: Workin for Sirius Corp. at the moment, worked towards allied and getting system permit and keep on working for them hanging around in Sirius. But I kinda want to go working for the Federal Congress next.
I by the way faced many consequences and danger in my Time with Sirius Corp, don't worry. I like that too, you know.

Given the size of the galaxy combined with instance limits, time zones and the matchmaking, even having the one Open game mode wouldn't really change things for you.

I don't "duck in" to solo; I play there. It is hardly "no risk." Where am I in the game? I've just finished a massive grind & have the credits to do what I please. I'm not going to buy a 'conda or Python & come into open, which seems to be a fear for most open advocates, reiterated many times in this thread.

Where am I going now? On a long, long journey; first, to visit several star systems famous in science fiction movies & literature. Then the pilgimmage to Sag*. Then go looking for neutron stars and black holes. Then to circumnavigate the galactic disk; from side to side and from top to bottom. Then perhaps take the Buckyball Run contests. It will keep me entertained for months, judging by the reports of other explorers.

Absolutely will not impact your gameplay whatsoever, until I get back & sell my system data, that is. Wouldn't make any difference being in open, solo or group.

Serious answer: I play solo if I want to be free from a certain type of player that thinks forcing his will onto me is fun for me - it's not. I play solo if I don't want to meet players that think that trying to dominate me in any form is an acceptable behavior for an adult human being in any form of social interaction - in RL or in a game.
Sometimes, when I decide I like to play with that type of human or if I'm in a good mood, I play Open Mode.

When I play Open Mode I often fly around with a smallis ship - Sidewinder, Eagle, DBS, DBX - and do missions, a bit of low scale RP trading. If I jump into my Vulture I normally do REZ bounty hunting.

In solo mode I prefer to fly around in my DBX or Vulture and do missions, a bit of low scale RP trading and exploring. I do trading in my Anaconda to be able to buy all the nice ships that are fun to fly around.

I have my Anaconda, Python and Asp. I think about getting an Orca. I like to fly around with these ships.
