Not that large a sample but this poll tried to capture how players play the game.

Oh, so if that sample represents the game as a whole - Open has more dedicated players than any other mode.

Interesting !!!

So, we can say according to that poll, even though Open mode has more dedicated players than any other mode, they still want to mess the game up for anyone who does not want to be a baby seal.

Despite what everyone thinks not every open players is trying to force solo players in some kind of slaughter house or something.

No, but a few exclusively Open players are attempting to force solo players into open, or to put it more accurately, force single players into mulitplayer.

There are many reasons, several of which have been pointed out by now, why people avoid multiplayer and they've nothing at all to do with skill, "slaughter houses", PvP, or even the game itself. A great many people play single player because they don't like playing with other people full stop.

If you try to push them into Open you'll just lose them to another game.

Really, because the non-slaughter house version of ED is known as Mobius and I don't see those members moaning about "interactions".

In fact, the only difference between Mobius and Open is the slaughter house.... hmmmm, funny that.
They also disallow, piracy, bounty hunting, any form of fighting for your power, or pretty much any form of pvp (except CZs).

This nail it pretty accurate :)

It makes perfect sense for a PvE group (that allows a light sprinkling of PvP) - players get to play with players rather than shoot at them, or just pass them by.

You mean, players get to "interact", because that is all the Open Advocates want, is someone to "interact" with
And what says brotherly love like an "interaction" that leaves you on the rebuy screen ;)

Doesnt matter. There will be always a storm if something is removed that people actually want. Remove wings or chat and you will see the reaction.

This game is advertised as MMO with an optional singleplayer (online only!) and has PvP inside. What do you think how many people got this game for the full price and expect it to actually be JUST THAT, what they paid for?
Look at the angry reviews on steam. 543 negative reviews, most of them are just the same - not enough action. This is not a small amount of people, something around 20% of all reviews on steam.
Yeah maybe some of them got the game without looking deep into it, but when i see something called MMO and multiplayer + PvP inside, i expect just that. A game where i can jump in and kick behinds without grinding for 500+ hours and then spending an hour to get an opponent who is actually willing to fight.

Huh, did you actually read the Steam page?

Like, just above where it classifies the game as a MMO, it also classifies it as a single-player game.

And the following is how Frontier describes the game's multiplayer in its own Steam page:

Massively Multiplayer
Experience unpredictable encounters with players from around the world in Elite: Dangerous’ vast massively multiplayer space. Experience the connected galaxy alone in Solo mode or with players across the world in Open Play, where every pilot you face could become a trusted ally or your deadliest enemy. You will need to register a free Elite: Dangerous account with Frontier to play the game.

Notice how it explicitly tell the potential player how he can play in solo mode, and thus never meet anyone?

Also, PvP is never emphasized. There's a tangential reference in the paragraph I've quoted, and that's all that is said about PvP in the whole Steam page.

Sorry, but ED was never advertised or sold as a PvP-focused game. It allows PvP, but doesn't mandate it — as is obvious to everyone that did read the part where it talks about multiplayer, given that a solo player can never be forced into PvP.

Problem is, that those polls on fan forums are statistically totally irelevant from the development point of view. I know it, becase I was in game development bussiness for approx. 8 years.

When you have a game and discussion forum about the game, the results of any poll is severely biased. Simply because only a small fraction of players (from the whole lot of paying customers) is reading forum. Only a fraction of this fraction is willing to register on the forum and actively discuss and/or vote in any poll on the forum. And this small sample of customers is not a random sample from the statistical point of view. Large majority of average players is not discussing at all, they simply play the game.

Reminds me of one bit of data about PvP presence in MMO forums. About a year ago, a LotRO dev gave some info on the imbalance between forum participation and actual number of PvPers. In that specific case, PvPers + raiders were more than half the people that posted on the forums, but less than 10% of the player base.

Hard to tell if this is the case here too, but from what I've seen through more than a decade either lurking or posting in MMO forums, in most games this seems to be the rule rather than the exception.
