Simply because many of them want to show off how good they are at shooting other players, and no so many of them want to be the ones getting shot.
It's been suggested a few times, and was always met with "but that is consensual, pre-arranged, non-emergent lame gameplay"![]()

Well I guess that would be too time consuming so I better don't start, though I have to admit that I am curious.
Well just again. What I and I sure the majority of the Pro-Open-Faction wants to say. It is not just to have the pewpew pvp where we mindlessly kill around. It is more of
A healthy and balanced PP and shaping the galaxy with all risks involved to do so. Since this is Elite Dangerous this might be reasonable.
We want a deep gameplay. Story driven and influenced by it's community.
An environment where you have to think twice about your actions, where you help each other and yes, where you attack each other. Not just because it is fun to kill, because of the immersive and thrilling story's that emerge of it.
Let's just put this in to PP. A trader who wants to deliver stuff to a system, let it be for expansion or fortifying should do this with a risk, where he might rely on others that help him, or just support him on his trade route. A living world where we have to stick together to be able to defend a system and to scare off the invader, even without killing him. A world where achieving a victory against another power really matters. A successful expansion that was accompanied with danger and even with loss of a couple of ships. Tragedies about a lost system though you have tried to fight back, revenge in return.
Just a living, breathing and unforgiving galaxy.
No matter if it is owed to the technical limitations or to players doing stuff in open, this what I just wrote down is unachievable with the current conditions and restrictions.
It would be a seperate galaxy, a 4th option. It wouldn't CHANGE A SINGLE THING FOR YOU. There would be solo/group/open and OPEN Only on a completely different database
Because power play could not be gamed entirely in solo
Trading would not entirely be done in solo - there would be risk
RES and CZ can not be farmed entirely in solo
There will be hunters, there will be prey. The hunters wont always hunt, there is always risk and reward playing.
But really, powerplay wont be done entirely in a cloak mode making the whole game play of power play utterly pointless and void of any value.
Are you seriously suggesting that a pvp arena is a good substitute for an open ended galaxy with pvp/pve?
The arena is a joke for a sandbox game.
I agree. But they will never move away from p2p the best we can hop for is a separate galaxy for a start.
hahahahahhaha
At the end of the day, we all want Elite: Dangerous to be the best game it can be.
Some think that is through PvP, some think PvE is the best way to go. FD want a hybrid system, and as it's their game it is their choice.
I didn't (and still don't) like it having the MMO tag. I also prefer "Flexi-Player" over "Selective Multiplayer" - but hey, we cannot always get what we want in the way we want it![]()
Actually I think its because the number of players who genuinely want PvP is quite small, making a PvP group to meet up is pointless, open can already be used for that, making a PvP group thats open only is extremely difficult to police in a meaningful way, if its too difficult to police in a meaningful way its the same as open.
Tinkin - be needin bodies. Makin group, PVP GROUP. Den gather numbers - if not enuff, no worries. While gatherin numbers, be playin game anyway.
Den, if numbers enuff - pick systems in ring. Establish perimeter. Dis ring define play area - gud ting. Space too big an as yuh say, not enuff mons to fill it fah PvP. Widdin dis ring of systems, dis play area area mons knowin dis be fighting area - anytin goes.
Mons not PvP when in group? Well, noting lost. Unlike Mobius, not PvP in de group not a problem. Unless Extreme Tradin gonna upset folks!
Might even be endin up wid a gud group. Gud friends to be made.
elite dangerous will dissapear back into obscurity when star citizen comes out if solo mode does not go
im not i pirate am i, theres no such thing in EUnhappy pirate is unhappy?
I can only hope you are right, that one day the AI is mean and tough enough to drive everyone to open just because he needs support on his trade route. Or whatever he is doing. The mismanaged risk in this game is the poor AI the game released with. AI is the balancing mechanism between the modes. If the AI is strong enough that overwhelming number of the player base is similarly challenged then the min max of the private modes dies...and people play based on the their choice of interactions with people.
If the AI doesn't improve then Private remains EZ mode and the game continues on in an unbalanced manner. Since the AI is improving...balancing is occuring.

the PvP group is open, due to the existance of Mobius as the pve group basically, a manual pvp group wouldn't really have any benefits over open, its just the difference between player A joining group A or player B joining group B
elite dangerous will dissapear back into obscurity when star citizen comes out if solo mode does not go, mmo or whatever its not going to work as a game or a business, these are really bad business choices, no online game will succeed with the solo mode bolstering the multiplaer mode like this, some things are the way they are for a reason
Yeah, ha ha.
FD will not move away from p2p and having Solo and Open in the same galaxy.
And of this I'm glad.
It did make sense to not have it originwly but the backers insisted, why not seperate the accounts? players who wanted a solo mode wont have expected online play and those who cant help but vanish when they are being pirated are going to be tempted to be solo until they are strong...so thats not good for pirating at all.
neither is hatch breakers taking longer than it takes to log out, why not pop a litle countdown above the player so we know they are planning a vanish? its not like any other succesful online game would have succeeded with a solo mode
