As the OP states this is a discussion about the game modes, I will throw my opinion into the grinder too :)

I would personally get rid of Group and Solo play for the reasons I am about to give:

1) Group play where you can fly around with ya buddies making a whole mess of the galaxy as you see fit should never have an affect on the online side of things. Now we have wings where groups of pilots can get together and fly around it replaces groups to some extent.

2) Solo play should never have affected the online section of the game or back story mainly as players could all go solo wrack up huge problems in a system opposed only by the npcs who can be dealt with at leisure so should not have a effect on the multiplayer aspect.

3) FD has already stated there will not be a offline version of the game unless E: D goes down then they would release the server code etc. To this end E: D is a multiplayer game and should be played as such to have modes that players can 'interact' with the main online game without penalty is ludicrous.

I dont go into a game like World of Warcraft and play in a group to wrack up loads of experience then come into the game and cause problems for others nor would I, its the same with E: D it has to choose what direction its going to take or it will fail due to its own indecision. Are we to have Open or Solo as either is a totally different game and none of them should interact with the other. If you like solo play because you dont like dealing with other players and their comments block em but the game should be open play only as its a multiplayer game only we cannot play it offline.

Just... read some of the thread you are posting in. Any random page should have the reasons why your suggestions won't fly.

Apart from the "Private" part.

If it was a MP only it would not have solo mode.

WoW doesn't have a specific solo mode, you can play in the city but will never level, for example (thus, the 10000000000001 level 1 trade alts). But WoW also has at least 20% of the players purely playing solo (Blizzard's statistics, not my opinion), and that population is growing as social media takes up players time. Raids already are scaling down to the point, 6.2 there's going to be Mythic dungeons for even smaller group players getting some raid level gear (when the videos are of X class soloing X raid boss...yeah, solo gaming is becoming the future as MMOs collapse). ^-^

Yeah but maybe the group bit could be brought into the Open section as Guilds etc where they have a special comm channel so you can talk to them no matter where they are in the galaxy. Imagine those possibilities where you could have daring organised raids etc.

Maybe as other have stated in other threads take a hit of some kind for keep changing modes, after all from reading the first five pages of posts (there are 499 after all) there seems to be a section where people just jump between modes when it gets tricky or they are continuously interdicted etc. If there was a hit for keep changing between the modes then it might deter people from keep jumping, maybe allowing more than one pilot and restricting them to modes of play for example one for 'open', one for groups and one for solo would also stop the farming that has been going on as well.

Well let's see how this discussion goes post Powerplay announcement that just landed....

All solo players back the trade faction, all open players back a combat faction. Hilarity ensues.

If Lugh was anything to go by the results will be interesting . . .

So let's see. Large groups, check. PvP available outside the criminal justice system, check. No change to influence by Private modes, check. Why will anyone play in Open? All rewards will be much easier to get in Private modes....
 
Even the solo mode in this game is mp. Buying up all the goods in a station in solo with a T9 affects the players trading in open so still counts as pvp :D

To a point. Trade updates are MP, but players never cross paths in solo mode (which is perfect, since the "social" scene of MMOs are only getting stranger. How strange? Goto YouTube and lookup: Moon Guard!).:eek:

I'm not fussed about solo mode. The crux of the issue is (referring to my previous example) the solo player can influence the actions of players in open but the open players have a harder time working against solo players.

In open and someone's trading on "my route" I can jump in a combat ship and scare off the competition. If the guy in the T9 ruining my profits is in solo there's nothing I can do.

.... or maybe just leave the three game modes and mode switching feature as they are, which is as they were pitched to the KS backers nearly two and a half years ago.

"can influence" vs "working against"

Both modes can influence each other the same way and neither mode can work against the other (directly).

Did you try the community goals in Lugh?

No I wasn't playing then. But I have stated previously that I abstain from CGs (partly) because I do not want to play against the spirit of organised player action, even though it is perfectly legitimate for players to do so. It's my choice (and FDs), not yours.
