Modes The Solo vs Open vs Groups Thread [See new thread]

What's stopping a Solo player from going to Open? Nothing except they do not want to. And the world be damned if the devs force them there. Open players feel the same way when they are forced into another mode because the gameplay dictates it (read the Devs force them there). As I have said, not a hard concept to understand...and yet...8003 posts.

You know I like you, you actually make an effort to communicate. I get what you mean. But it is all based on preference.

.... and in another post I have put forward the opinion that such a simple modification has probably been left for now due to the immediate consequences that increasing submission FSD cooldown would have.

It would be interesting to know where you have gathered sufficient opinions from a non-role specific portion of the open player-base. I play in open and I don't consider the lack of mass lock for a hyper-drive escape "broken" for example.

It honestly depends who you play with and where you play. When I was trading I was using the zero cooldown on npcs and never took damage once. On players I would use the system jump and also always managed to escape. I got so bored of always running I started submitting to pirates, dropping them cargo and chatting.

After making friends with pirates and traders a like I got to hear both sides of the equation. No trader bothers to use defensive modules on their ships and currently min/max jump distance and cargo size as it's not needed. Using submit, boost, jump and system jump gave you god mode. Along with combat logging people are technically invincible and with the beacon exploit you don't even have to enter supercruise at all!

After the wing beacon exploit became well known it completely killed trading for me. I couldn't face working my ass off knowing there were people teleporting between stations and making insane amount of money. The fact that it was reported by several people in wings beta didn't help matters. If you go to the elitetraders reddit people happily offer themselves out for beacons whilst they're asleep and there's a still a video showing people exactly how to do it on this forum to this day.

After this I learned that piracy had evolved to the harsher tactics (to deal with the above) as described in my other post so I put my conda in storage and moved to piracy for the challenge and because it was the only profession I hadn't tried yet.

The only thing I can't understand is the solo/group players who are against separate community goals for open, even if it's a duplicate of the same goal for solo/group and then the results of both are totalled up to give the outcome. Even if more players are in solo/group atleast the open players would know that any results made in their one were only influenced by players they could actually interact with and it wouldn't change anything at all for solo/group players.

I honestly don't believe that many would be if it was presented the right way without blame or using negative terms like "easy mode", "unfair", etc. and without lumping in other grievances. Sometimes it's not just what you say but how you say it. The problem is some lazy min/max players who use the modes in a way they weren't intended, not the modes or the players who prefer them. We can probably all unite against such players who are not playing within the spirit of the setting or the Community Goals.

Pretty much yup. We are either being forced one way or another. This is because FD keep strong to their "satisfy both sides" thinking. And this is hurting the game a bit. I mean, people will go in Open and force others into Solo by killing on sight. And the devs are trying to balance this by by bit by inviting player to come in open and have meaningfull PvP. They really should have kind of a split. I know this idea might not be good. But hear me out.

People would get to choose where they want to play. Solo/Groups/Open. And they can only change that once every 2 or so days(preferably weekly, but this might be a little extreme). This way, assuming Powers have small changes every week. You can't just change to solo and do the missions in a parallel universe. Why would this not work? Solo players stay in solo. Open players play in open. And the ones who want to play the system can't anymore.

I imagine that it does very much depend on who you are playing with (and their preferred role).

Disregarding combat logging and the wing beacon insta-transport issue (hopefully they will both be dealt with to some degree), if all ships have to hang about after interdiction then for some of them that's simply going to be a "death" sentence.

However, it's not in the case of a win/lose scenario. Which most of the new PP goals are appearing to be. Some conflict between two opposing groups with an outcome that puts one as a winner (whether a trade goal, combat goal, exploration goal, etc.) Basically, it will be the first side to meet the tiers required wins. There is no reason to play this, currently, in Open (if you are expecting to win). Any player can outkill, out trade, and out explore anyone in private mode, because you have no interference from other players in any given area of the game. This forces players that prefer Open, but want to compete for the win in a community goal, into Private modes.

This is why there has to be some level of balancing for this issue. If the balance issue doesn't fix this issue, the game will not live up to its potential. It becomes a 'play how you want until you have to go to Private mode to win' I have no idea how to fix this. I do not care how it gets fixed. I've seen some good suggestions...and bad. To claim there isn't a problem is not understanding the nature of the game and where it is going.

Exactly - what are the "winning conditions" in Elite? Do I get to enter 3 bytes on the high score table? Do I get a stuffed Trumble? :D

Believe me guys...there are wins and losses. The Feds lost Lugh, CSG won Lugh. Win/loss. This will occur with the new PP.
This means we have a Yellow Dot on the galaxy map! So there! And I am waiting for my Trumble.

Oh yes it's role dependent about 90% of the players I've been playing with have always been passive though. Myself I've always been a passive member in open and only engaged in pvp once in Lugh combat zones until I started piracy. I did a lot of pvp in beta though but that doesn't really count.

It might be a death sentence but that "should" be covered by crime and punishment. If they changed it right now I agree it would be bad since 6k to kill a player with no consequences is ludicrous. We'll have to see what Michael's dev up date brings next week. I'm more interested in that than power play lol

Indeed - but those win/loss conditions are for in-game events, seen from an in-game perspective. Players neither win nor lose by these events, as neither is a condition in which the game ends. Simply playing Elite is winning, as long as you are enjoying the experience, even if every faction you are trying to help is getting its face rubbed in trumbledung :)

strange, as soon as Mr. Braben comments on the "solo players balancing in PP", the focus of the thread switches...

i thought that had been the last problem left?

It did?

It won't be over until every filthy stinking solo player is ground in to the dust!

(feel free to swap solo player with the mode of your choice in the interests of keeping the thread going to 1000 pages) :D

Hmmm... i didn't think i'd smell that much ;)
But fortunately, i won't hurt your nose, since you won't meet me.

And about keeping the thread up... i'm getting a bit tired lately.
Running around in circles makes me feel dizzy somehow.

I've had a break from the thread, I'll take the wheel while you have a rest :)

After all, got to make it to 1000 - I've got £50 saying the forums break ;)

I already noticed ;)

I'm just jumping in every now and then... depending on the mood.
But i gave up taking it seriously since it isn't about exchanging arguments anymore.

Keeping it up isn't wrong though... as long as we don't get a definite statement from the "gods" ;)

Edit: although i don't even know what this statement would have to include to make this stop.

You don't smell at all cuz you are in a parallel universe...

They would have to close this. That is the only possible reason we would stop. By force lol
