I've never played any of those games you listed. The last game I played "competitively" was quake.
Any way I always assumed "on topic" was when you brought a chocolate bar and used it on your partner but that might be going a bit far for this forum . . .
Some games are a life of their own with a culture all their own. Terms like 6.1 have no meaning to those who don't play WoW, but for those who do, 6.1 = no new content update which means 3-4 months of being bored to death for over 7 million gamers worldwide.
That's when Steam is opened and it's time to look for something ELSE to play.
Now people gravitate to games like ED because of RL interests (I always wanted to be an optical astronomer), but the Buck Rogers aspects just isn't going to "fly" (there's EvE already for space combat with 10 years of polish, for example). So PvP and the game theory concepts of "risk vs reward" doesn't appeal to me here. But I don't like the usual PvP smacktalk that playing solo is due to being some "carebear" and "easy mode". After all these years playing in MMO mode, I'm simply tired of it. Devs didn't help when they refused to create anything BUT MP/MMO style games (immersion be damned all to prove putting GOATS on even mountain peaks to show "danger" in a pixelated world), either.
I didn't realize ED had an actual star catalog that is real, not just space fantasy, and THAT changed how I play the game completely (ED is sooooooo miss represented as a game when something this huge isn't even mentioned but as 480 billion star systems [never telling that it represents actual astronomical data! Not some EvE make believe universe stuff]). $60 is a bargain for that in itself. That turned ED from Buck Rogers to a NASA like sim to me, and I don't see this game even as a game anymore, I see it as a literal space sim more like astronauts train upon, not fighter pilots.
ED has to be solo mode for me, as anything else (even trade) breaks the total immersion of exploration. When the "oh, neat!" is about solar flares and star classes, not what C2 weapon (or even ships) matters...yeah!!!
Seriously, this is a AAVASO member's star party sim. Only thing missing are observation tools to find/track variable stars. XD
Took a WoW break to discover not only ED (it is unknown in the USA), finding a sim that is totally fitting to my life long interests in an accessible game format! W00t!
