there will always be players that only do pvp, there will always players that just do pve and there will always be solo players. each have their own points and each is valid.
but after posting in this thread a few times it appears that no one will agree with the other regardless of facts, with this I now show you all how I see this thread.

this will be reposted here so often now.... :D

the dog is "group" i think... it doesn't hurt anyone ;)

Seeing as I'm playing Ironmouse in Solo...

although i never intended to do so, i quite do.

lost two ships since gamma, both due to the "suddenly exploding next to station" bug which was fixed.
both reimbursed... so i'm telling myself i'm still SIM .. solo ironman (they couldn't fix my stats).
not that i would really clear my save though if i mess up ;)

I was going to put a tag on each character but thought it would be best for others to figure out who represents what mode.

1: ED matchmaking is and always has been at player discretion. You can chose not to be matched with anyone in any instance, you can choose to matched only with a particular list of other players or you can choose to be matched with anyone at all.

2: This is a per-session decision and you can change it every time you start the game without loss of progress or any other penalty.

3: This is by design and has been a known feature of the game since before its release.

Now, these three things are not opinions, they are demonstrable facts. "Disagreeing" with them is merely being in denial.

What follows is my opinion rather than demonstrable fact so feel free to disagree.

If any of those three facts are a deal-breaker for an individual player then I wonder why they are even here. Were you an early backer advocating a different design and sadly it didn't go the way you wanted? If so, I'm sorry for your disappointment but it is what it is. Did you buy the game post-release in ignorance of the above facts? If so, I'm afraid I have little sympathy but I'm sure we've all made a few mistaken purchases in our lives.

It's not about "PvP mode" or "PvE mode" it is simply "who do I want to play with this time?" and I get to choose between "nobody", any of several subsets of players of which I am a member or "everybody".

I can understand hardcore PvP players being frustrated at not finding enough like-minded folks in the huge galaxy that is ED unless they go to CG systems or other known centers of player population. However, a little thought of the size of the ED universe and the known game mechanics should have made it clear that this is how the PvP experience would look. You're still welcome to play the game your way, and there are places where you can find the kind of experience you want. There is absolutely no need to change anything for other players in order for you to do that. Sometimes I'm in the mood for PvP myself and I do the same you do - I climb into a combat oriented ship that I can afford to lose and go to one of those places. I usually get handed my head, because I'm most definitely not hardcore about it, but when I'm in the mood it's still fun. However, because I'm not hardcore about it I am frequently not in the mood for that so then I choose my play mode, ship and destination accordingly. Anything that reduces my ability to do so will reduce the time I play ED, not increase it, so where does that leave those that "need a sizable player-base" then?

Sure they can change the modes. But i expected pure multiplayer would be popular and single & private was more a thing for exploring, playing when you cant proper play multiplayer (you get disturbed, cant talk etc) and for testing. But right now people do anything in solo/private mode.
Well, you are going to have to ask yourself if that was a realistic expectation on your part, or rather, since you wouldn't be complaining if it was a valid assumption, why your assumption was in error.

If there is a constant in this threadnaught, it's that the open only crowd consistently overestimates the appeal of the play-style. Common sense should tell everyone that it's a very attractive play-style to some, a wholly uninviting play-style to others, and somewhere in the middle for everyone else.

There is so much wasted energy bantering about ideas on how to attract (and sometimes force, depending on the poster) people to open, when really it's a waste of time. Those who would be attracted to that style of play will find it all on their own.

Just please, give up this fantasy that the player base can be homogenized where everyone likes the same thing. It's never, ever going to happen.

I figured it out, Group is the smallest and most forgotten of the three, so it is the mouse, and solo is the dog because he can't hit anything which means he's terrible at pvp.

LOL... Well, luckily for the dog, he doesn't have to do PvP. ;) And does that meant that everyone in open is a... cat? ;)

in the end ofc cat aka open from ur matching always get beaten by the dog ;)

Well the dog doesn't have any natural predators. He sits around all day with noone to challenge him, so of course he's bigger. The cat chases and is chased, he may not be as big but he's feisty.
