The SRV is so primitive... how about a hovercraft?

A few months ago myself and others submitted this as a suggestion/request for many of the same reasons. Sort of a surface recon vehicle that would function more like an SLF (I think my suggestion was an exploration variant SLF rather than a flying SRV).

Would be cool!

It amazes me that, in a game that is criticized by many for lack of content, players are constantly asking to shortcut the content.
Not only is driving around among boulders and craters eminently believable and useful - it is also fun, and one of the few activities that we actually have to do to progress in certain areas.

Being able to skim over the surface of planets at high speed with no effort would be dull and pointless in the context of the game, unless done in the ships that are provided for the purpose.

in all honesty a SRV that gets damaged by a simple rock would really means in 3303 it's a liability especially for explorers a skimmer would be better.

Scarab: Allrounder
Hovercraft: Good for rough terrain, no good shields, no heavy weapons, just one cargo slot, fast
Tank: Good armor, heavy weapons, slow, no cargo space
Transporter: Lots of cargo space, slow, weak shields, strong hull

Except it doesnt, unless you go racing at stupid speeds. No sane actual space explorer drives around at 100mph on alien planets. Its a cool option, but thats all it is, an option. :p

If they had made a hovercraft, they definately would have been accused of

"Not adding any real new gameplay mechanics for planetary landings!!!, it's just a ship that can't go very far up!!!"

A hovercraft would be cool. Jonny Quest used to fly them, why can't I. (?)

Have a nice day

I wonder why don't we have an alternative to this "vintage" vehicle.
We have drones of the same size which can fly for hours, and we are stuck on the ground struggling with terrain, holes, traction, able only to "fly" the SRV for a few seconds. Why don't we have a levitating hovercraft, a speeder, whatever else?! Scanner seems not to be the problem, because we still receive signals when we fly the SRV. Anywhere in the Sci-Fi world we have such vehicles/motorbikes. Look at Star Citizen itself, or Star Wars.
Please, give us a faster and more comfortable prospecting vehicle, let's try to make something fun instead of painful out of this game, because every action in the game is painful. ED will be remembered as the most painful, repetitive, never-ending grind game ever.

I like to drive. If you like to fly, why not use a self launched fighter?

For some technical reason, we can't launch a SLF with the ship landed, or even with gear down ... but that may have to do with the SLF launching from underneath the ship :D

Lol, I know :D

What I meant, is that FD can chose between driving or flying, as a means for us to transport ourselves. In essence, we have both already, so nothing has to be removed, only some things needs to be changed, sort of...

When they get around to adding new vehicles I think a skimmer would be interesting. What we need are some choices, each with a series of pros & cons; the Scarab best all arounder; heavy scarab slower, but more tanky; miner scarab pants in a fight but can extract minerals; skimmer can't haul anything but is zippy and easy to use. Unfortunately the addition of extra SRV variants would require additional gameplay options on the planetary surfaces, and we all know how Fdev feels about that:D

It's brilliant for the first 5 minutes...then you stop and the planet music starts and you feel one with the cosmos. Then you drive some more and realize it handles like crap.

Having more vehicles, even floaty ones wouldn't make planet surfaces any worse.

Ha ha ! I felt like that yesterday, driving round looking for arsenic.

Time after time, I would blast a chondrite or outcrop and find no arsenic ... then the "sad" music would play .... emphasizing that I am alone .... very alone [where is it]

I would love another land vehicle to go with the SRV

I think the SRV's great though; it provides my favourite gameplay :)

Hovercraft are great on level or nearly level ground, not so great for climbing hills and mountains, or for descending into and climbing out of craters though.

This is true, too- although somewhat limited in "interactive" capability on surfaces :)

There are some interesting things one can do with a ship that I think Frontier meant for the SRV only. I often use my ship to take down hostile skimmers and base defenses, and I've even scooped up cargo off the ground using my ship. The only thing I can't do is interact with data ports.

Skimmers do, indeed, hover. Calling them hovercraft conflicts with the extant definition of the term - we don't call helicopters hovercraft, after all.
Hovering Craft?

To you! I've spent hours skimming over the surfaces of planets 100 feet in the air in my iCourier, using the external camera's to get hero views without getting bored. I do find combat zones and mining dull and pointless, and yet I don't expect Fdev to stop developing them for players that enjoy that sort of thing.

Plus, it would actually help in the context of the game if you're looking for that barnacle / alien crash site that exists on one spot on the entire planet (since the ship doesn't have a POI scanner).
