The SRV is so primitive... how about a hovercraft?

So how do skimmers work?

Dyson Skimmers.

I knew that man would come back to haunt us.

Having done some "research", if the skimmer thrusters are not 100% artistic it looks like some sort of ion engine. Specifically hall effect, only without the center propellant column. Considering everything is fusion powered(barring the SRV that runs on iphone gen 1 batteries) it makes some sense for low powered electric thrusters to be used.

Completely useless for atmospheres, but simply enable folding rotors if/when we get them. Bam, done. I want my skimmer now please.

I personally want submarines. Imagine diving into the black of some ocean on some Ice world or Earth like. Canopy cracking under the pressure. Perhaps something swallows the SubmarineRV whole? Its ok though. It is just telepresence.[noob]

"Why can't we drive around on planets?"

"Why are we driving around instead of flying?"

The SRV concept is great. It's a bit weak for how it appears however I can live with it given that I can beef it up with some materials. Exploring probably got a lot better with the ability to land on planets and venture away from the ship in the SRV. Now you don't have to return to civilization to get repairs on things either. It's like FD is hoping most of us go away.

I'd like to have some remote beacons I could use to dump my exploration data however. That would allow folks to stay out in the wild and still get some work accomplished.

I've never said this before*, honest.

But I would flippin' love...

Hover Tanks!

Pretty please?

*Only every single time anything to do with hovercraft or new surface vehicles are mentioned...

Nah this is what we really want from Battlezone

Because you are a living breathing human, you are not supposed to enjoy the conveniences of advanced technology. you are supposed to suffer hard with the painfully basic problems of the early 20th century.

Simple answer: because we can already fly in dozens of vehicles, and the SRV is supposed to give a radically different experience.

The rest of your whine is rather sad though. If everything is terrible and unfun and grindy and evil and whatever, do yourself a favor and find a game that at least intends to offer what you think is fun. For your own sake.

so illogical immersion breaking diversity is the reason? Why not let people decide which vehicle they want? the SRV drivs like a crap tech vehicle anyways. Doesn't feels sciency, or fictional. Plays like crap engineering with a breeze of trolling. But then, there are many aspects of ED having trival problems solved in the 20th century suddenly reappearing unsolved in the 34th century.

For some technical reason, we can't launch a SLF with the ship landed, or even with gear down ... but that may have to do with the SLF launching from underneath the ship :D

For SLF Canyon runs without the mothership trailing me - I've used a strange little work around on a few occasions: Launch SLF, gently land the mothership ship (gear up) Shut down thrusters, switch to SLF. Now if only we could get rid of that restrictive 25km range limit.

It's brilliant for the first 5 minutes...then you stop and the planet music starts and you feel one with the cosmos. Then you drive some more and realize it handles like crap.

Having more vehicles, even floaty ones wouldn't make planet surfaces any worse.

AHAAHAHA, so very true!

Anyway, I'd like a skimmer, please.

I would love too, keep the srv as a very light transport on wheel (later add heavyer wheeled transport or tracked transport) and a wipeout style light speeder (no cargo, no weapon, no shield) but very fast for scouting :)
gliding at 250m/s at 2 to 15 m of altitude should be a wonderfull experience :p just a seat fixed on thrusters

Definitely agree regarding more vehicles. The current SRV really needs joystick curves to sort out the handling, PIP setting also makes a big difference, especially on icy and low gravity worlds. Once you have everything set up, it drifts and handles very nicely for a 4 tonne six wheeled truck.
