Interview with Erin Roberts and Eric Davis https://venturebeat.com/2018/06/28/...with-its-ambitious-alpha-3-2-quarterly-patch/

GamesBeat: Where are you now as far as how many people can be accommodated in the alpha? Is that going to change? Are you in the hundreds or thousands of players?

Roberts: In terms of an instance, right now we can put about 50 players in an instance. That will go up, but the final plan is obviously once we get the server meshing in — that won’t be this year, but that will be coming in next year — that will allow everyone to play in one huge instance with all the players. The servers will patch people from place to place. You can have 200 people in a room, and when they leave that room, another server takes over. When they take off into space, another server takes over. But the goal is to have everyone in the same instance.
Right now, as I say, we’re at about 50. We’ll probably get up to about 100-odd once we get the unconstrained streaming stuff in later this year. But right now, as far as the concurrency of players together, we have thousands of players who are in the game all the time.

GamesBeat: The point where you can accommodate a very large number of players, hundreds of thousands, how far away do you think that will be?

Roberts: That will be next year.

Just me, or is that the face of a worried man?

Won't work, at least in EU jurisdiction. There is no special treatment for software here, where "deliver anything" gets you out of jail for free.

The promises including all marketing material (all the trailers) are benchmarked against of what is customary in the market made by other AAA publishers, especially if the customer paid substantially more than the usual rate for a AAA game ($60). If you as a seller want to get away with some kind of bare bones Minecraft in space, you need to communicate exactly that in your marketing material.

We all know Chris Roberts did anything but that. Instead he promised things, which are technically impossible.

This is precisely how it was explained to me, all of their videos constitute advertising. The response from the clergy was that this cannot possibly be the case because then "Red Bull gives you wings" would be false advertising.

Red Bull was actually taken to court for that, and it was found to be false advertising. The law is crystal clear on advertising in the UK and EU.

What CIG are doing as regards advertised features is the same thing they are doing for refunds. They cannot legally flat out deny a refund, so they have everyone 'waiting' in a queue for a 'refund specialist'.

They cannot legally sell something as a pre-order and not deliver it, so everything is 'still in the long term plan'.

The terms of service reflect this strategy also.

What happened recently is that devs were caught up in Chris's promises from the past, and indicated that some things were never discussed, designed, planned or scheduled. Ship theft is a good example.

Lando then has to announce that these items are still in a long term plan because any of these guys being on record saying that an advertised feature isn't coming is evidence of false advertising (there is a technical legal term for that which I forget).

Now the dev answers are all pre-scripted, they have to be to avoid liability - and remember that in addition to any legal liability arising from false advertising, Skadden has also requested all videos and all emails in their discovery.

**Networking and engine core development was abandoned last summer in order to start checking off as many pre-sold features as possible to avoid legal liability**

Everyone working on the project knows this with the exception of a lot of junior techs and contractors.

CIG will not survive a challenge from any investigative authority who may or may not be knocking on their space door in two weeks.

Interesting. Thanks for that. Although it appeared there was no way to know what the market average was, a way to interpret supply and demand. Perhaps I missed something but having to swap between the Sell and Buy tabs to work that out is fiddly.

I wonder how long before they implement a trade computer to assist with this....hang on a minute.

If CIG include ways to make it really easy to make in-game currency quicker, with which you can buy ships with, how are they going to promote the sale of ships with real world money?

That video was from 3.0. In 3.0 it was really easy to make money trading and it has been toned down in 3.1 so it isn't a get rich quick type deal.

The prices/stock were dynamic that if a couple big ships came in and bought something, the supply would run out and the prices would go up significantly. Likewise if a couple big ships sold a specific item at a port, the buy price would plummet. In 3.0, the prices/economy were specific to the server you were on. So you could change servers and see different prices. I don't think that changed in 3.1, but not sure.

In 3.1 the best way to make money trading is to buy drugs from a drug from a drug lab. The drug lab isn't a marked location, so it isnt as easy to find, but it isn't that bad. The drug lab does not have an armistice zone, so there is a decent chance of getting shot. This is the sorta stuff I like, risk vs reward etc.

There is no in game way to know what good prices are. Similar to EDDB, people have written trading apps to track prices:

https://starcitizen.danielaburke.com/Trading

Unlike ED, though, there is no journal, so people have to enter the prices manually. And if prices are servers specific, it is only a rough guideline.

I, and most people in SC (at least that I interact with), want ship buying in game with in game currency. That doesnt exist at all yet. With the amount of resets, don't know that it will affect ship sales that much. But it will give you something to do with the money you earn. In 3.1 there isn't really anything to buy. In 3.2 at least you can buy ship components. Ship buying, well, soon™.

That's what you said last year Erin.

“So with the next big release a lot of the underlying game is there and then we can look at transferring people between servers so we can have hundreds of thousands of people maybe in one instance, but that doesn’t come online until later.”

It's ok Erin, Clive Johnson has you covered. Network Bind Culling was 'pretty much done' 10 months ago:

But wait! Wasn't this all being built in a Google Compute environment 4 years ago?

"We have chosen Google Compute for our initial cloud implementation as we think its the best combination of power, price and flexibility. We are attempting to build a dynamic server system where local nodes can be spun up to handle the hi-fidelity server “instances”"

I could go on, by a LOT, but that's a little bit of context for yet another 'it's coming next year' promise from one of the Roberts brothers.

I'd love to make a thing with all these gems, like a wall of shame...

Not had a chance to watch that video yet - but weren't the big scary vandulls supposed to have been made bigger and scarier?

These are tiddlers that you can squish with a Big Bennys bowl. The real Vandulls are meant to strip off their armour in a fit of RAEG and start glowing like a squid before charging you and beating you to death with their breath.

Wow. Amazing the levels of fabrication and misleading product representation these guys can just so casually drop. And of course not a single word about the completely broken performance. Totally shameless and reckless. I really hope authorities catch up to them at some point.

Erin has gotten really bad recently, he's starting to make Chris sound like a second hand car salesman.

Oh wait...
