I know there is a lot of Lore and nostalgia connected to the name....but I really think it should be called someting else. "Thargoids" could be the nickname....but not the actual latin name given.

"Actual latin name"? Son, I don't know if you actually met some Thargoids, but let me enlighten you: we don't know how they called themselves because their chosen methods of communication were lasers and explosions.

Thargoids are actually from Captain Kremman https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ShCCSF9m-7M and many of the things in the original Elite are cultural references to 70/80's TV and film. Harmless and mostly harmless is from Hitchhikers guide for instance and I have always assumed the Viper was BSG inspired
ED without Thargoids would be just Puetron inducing, uggy, ichy and wrong

The Thargoids first made an appearance in an old BBC Cartoon from 1978, called Captain Kremmen (voiced by Kenny Everett)

I'm sure Braben was a fan as he added a lot of other British humour to the original Elite a few years later, with other in-game references to stuff like the Hitch Hikers Guide to the Galaxy etc..

Hmmm.. I wonder if I kit out a long range asp with a fuel scoop and just fly out into the ether, that I may run into a Thargoid or two??? (dons his space suit...)
