The Thinking Behind UI Design / UX in Odyssey

No, it's just bad all around, on a controller what would be "mouse clicks" are extra joystick jogs or clicks on the directional pad which are just as frustrating. And please stop scapegoating consoles for the bad UI, we're all in this mess together.
This, its actually worse on controllers or using a straight up hotas.

To give you an example, before i could exit from a menu with my hotas by like 2 clicks, now, its about an 8 button hop.

Filtering also is a horrible thing now, and if im correct you cant actually filter based on multiple things anymore.

but he's not wrong that having a console version pretty much always makes the PC UI somewhat worse unless there's a separate PC specific UI.

Actually he is wrong.
for 1.5 years i play in parallel on XB with controller and on PC with kb/mouse and Horizons UI was dead perfect. No issues whatsoever

Here comes EDO, and the UI is a mess. This falls on the team not on the devices aimed for.

And let me tell you that the tile UI model is not as good for controllers as someone may imply. I have had no issues with carriers UI in Horizons using the PC KB/M, but on XB navigating those tiled buttons is not quite a pleasant experience, sometime requiring extra clicks.

If you think the Horizons UI is anything close to perfect you need to get out more.

Try counting how many button presses it takes to request docking.

Compared to what we have now?
Oh, but it is.

Things started to get less perfect when they introduced the uneven tiled interface for carriers and when they altered the symmetry of the buttons in the right panel making them into unevenly arranged tiles. None of those changes made UI navigation using a controller easier, but those changes are not as intrusive if you use a mouse or a touch screen.

The one that is just a hot mess, is the weapon vendor, like, what the hell does that sliding bar even tell me for magazine size? why is that the ONLY thing i see for a gun? i dont get to see the power or anything of it?
bUt NuMbeRs ArE hArD tO rEaD!

This is a game involving science fiction and for whatever reason, UI design continues to shift towards something that wants to move further and further away from showing defined values.

You know what the tile UI reminds me of? The interface on these "smart" tvs. Have to use a remote to navigate and I don't like them much.

I don't post here much as I much rather prefer to play Elite instead but the Odyssey UI/UX changes are a DISASTER. What the hell F-dev? It's clear that you have done zero or near-zero design workshops with users which is a cardinal sin in revamping a products interface. A pretty UI is not UX, and the user experience of the system maps and galaxy maps is a train wreck. Information tucked away, too many clicks, too many mouse movements (thanks now I need to use the mouse?!). If you fix nothing else, please, fix the UX

Perfectly put! Thanks for coming and posting! Nobody asked for any of this just improve some of the deficits like bookmarks for example

"Touchscreens are THE FUTURE!"

As an off-topic sidenote on this: no, not in aviation. Touchscreens in aviation are the past.

A lot of airlines are switching back to HDDs with programable softkeys. For the same reason why a number of military forces never even adopted them: they work great under stable conditions, but when things really go wrong, the aircraft might be shaking, the crew might be exposed to several g, etc. In such a case, touchscreens require noticeably more effort to use than the older control elements. Which is not what you want during such an emergency situation.

Why couldn't they just add a few requested features to the existing Horizons UI? Why did they have to needlessly replace a great UI?

Someone decided this was necessary and someone OK'd the final design. That's bothersome.

Hmm... reading is hard, it seems. All i wrote and what you quoted is that i before people told me better, i thought it was because of the design being made with a controller in mind. So, if i say that i formerly thought it was due to it being designed for controllers, i am scapegoating them? Interesting logic.

There are literally two circumstances for which I, if operating as a UI designer for Frontier, would design something like this.

1: (Less likely) If a team was working on a companion app for phones which allows you to replicate parts of the interface on your phone, which you could then have on your desk next to your keyboard, say, constantly open on the galmap so you do not need to bring it up on your main screen each time you want to use it.

2: (More plausible) If there was a bunch of development in progress on bringing the game to GeForce Now and/or XCloud, and an interface was desired by management which would work on touchscreens once gamers were able to stream ED to tablets and the like.
3. THe UI was outsourced to a third party company with a list of user stories to fulfill. ow it got signed off on is another story.

The wheel menu is a lesson in frustration.
Idea of "press and hold" is not very good.
It can be useful if all my 102 buttons already assigned and I still want assign 103rd action. But this is obviously not that case.
Now let's consider I want to share 20 wing missions staying on my legs... for each mission I need to bring up the wheel (press and hold), then couple clicks to open transaction tab.
Seems that could be done easier and may require less clicks.
FD, please stop adding new clicks and focus on reducing them instead to allow user make things faster. And I don't mean assigning shortcuts to every possible action, I am about more user oriented interface.
Thanks!

Oh... I missed the sarcasm. sorry it was late at night and I was exhausted (both in dealing with odyssey launcher and a screaming kid) when I wrote that previous post. Gotcha now.

It is horrific.

It is enough to convince me that I'll be spending the majority of my time in Horizons rather than Odyssey. If this is the UI they force on Horizons when Odyssey releases on consoles, I will be forced to reconsider if this is the best way to waste my gaming time.

No consideration needed here. Based on all I’m hearing, if they backport these UI changes to Horizons I’m out. I have wrist tendinitis and 2x-3x more clicking is a non-starter. FD, mess up your FPS all you want, but leave my space sim alone.

They obviously don't have a clue how to design a modern and intuitive Interface. They released the '1996-Paint-Guy' on this job.
Really a shame when you think about that it is 2021, a time with uncountable good designed Apps for your phone.

The Galaxy Map for example, is a lot better in Horizons from a Design perspective. Everything important is centered, and not splattered across the edges like it is now with Odyssey.

For me, Odysseys UI Design is a major step back to what we had in Horizons. It's rediculous..
