The "to hell with it i ordered CV1 anyway" post

The thing that bugs me about the walking around experience is that you're still tethered to your PC by a long cable that you can't see. I'm pretty sure that I'd be tripping over it every 5 minutes!
yeah exactly... VR for now is a seated experience no matter what vive is trying to market... Great for space sims and racing games... anythign really where u sit...

I've tried the VIVE and not only was the tripping over the cables an issue, you need a complete empty room for it. There even had to be a dedicated person standing behind me just becuase of the cables. Also, the installation of the 2 cams is a hassle cuz they need to be installed at opposite corners of the room. Way too much hassle and overhead. Oculus is def the way to go...especiaaly for flight/driving games!

There are still all these issues regarding VR: cables, resolution, front-camera or the Vive's room recogn. system...

If only the FOV would be natural and this diving-mask feeling would be gone, I'd have my "best E : D experience for now". Heck, I bought the Oculus only for that - even though I have a room which I could dedicate to VR. What would happen if Valve bundle Half Life 3 with the HTC Vive? I guess nothing special... because of the cables. I would really want to walk and run within the maps.

So... still curious for the 1:1 comparison of the current HMDs.

Ha ha, we really have become far too blasé about new technology and just what technological leaps are happening in our lifetimes! This is the birth of consumer VR, there is a lot to improve on for sure but it's already amazing when you think about it, no? Yes, more FoV, wireless (with no batteries :p ), 16k screens working on a £200 PC, sub millimetre full body/digit tracking, full body haptic feedback (without wearing a suit) - I mean it's great to have these dreams and some will come and some won't. VR is still very cool though, right now!

Half Life 3 would be a bad bundle for VR IMHO - a lot of people have issues with FPS type games/demos due to movement in the virtual world. People are generally fine in vehicles of some sort - cars, space ships - but not when they're walking and running as a person. I don't think this is something that VR technology itself can completely "fix", as there are physiological issues involved. Current methods are things like that Bullet Train game where you "warp" (IIRC) between locations. Something else that will help, that may sound a bit nuts but I know it works for me after using the Gear VR, is wireless and playing in a swivel chair! That way, when I want to turn a corner I physically turn in the chair and my body is experiencing what it's seeing.

Anyway, waffle waffle. There is so much to all this new technology - personally I am just glad we're getting this in our lifetimes. :)

Very much with you on that! It is exciting stuff! But still I hope it does'nt get so exciting that we start to ignore real life (as depicted in many movies about VR). If phones/social media have so much changed our personal interactions in such little time, imagine what VR will do.

I preordered too.

I opened the shop when the countdown reached zero... Got directly through... But... I starred at the price, trying to get the red colour out of my face... After two hours, i went back to the shop and ordered. Customer 3,415,000, delivery in March... DAMN :D

Now, a few days after, i really cant wait to get the CV1 and i am convinced i will enjoy every second of using it.

Preordered too. Took 30 minutes after the end of the countdown until my order made it through though. :(

No worries about ED: I am sure it will work until then.

Same situation here i.e. 30 minutes to complete the order... do you know when your estimated delivery date is?

I pre-ordered too. I was waiting 15 minutes before in front of my computer but only could complete my order 40 minutes after the store opened due to payment problems :(.
Estimated delivery was April but it could be also May. If there are user cancellations I am confident it will be sent in April.
Now that they are building up stock I hope they increase their delivery processing rate and it all goes faster than expected.

Anyway, there is no point to have it before Frontier adds SDK 1.0 support or Valve updates SteamVr. I've tried EVE Valkyrie and it is a really good VR experience and you will be able to play it from day one, but it is another kind of game.

I think really some people shouldn't be on VR. There is nothing about Half-Life 2 that even remotely causes sickness for a normal person. I have a friend who falls off his chair without VR if he tries to play any game locked at 60hz.

HL2 (and thus a hypothetical HL3) isn't a frantic head-bobbing experience. Team Fortress 2 got a very good reception with VR users and that is much more frantic.

" People are generally fine in vehicles of some sort - cars, space ships" <<< No they aren't. The sort of people I describe are the ones also complaining about falling off their chairs and spewing when they get into the SRV on horizons.

This has not been my experience or the experience of people in the podcasts I listen too.

I have fairly steady vr legs i Play elite or racing games or no limits coaster indefinitely but hl2 going in cold I can only manage 20 mins on before getting clammy. If I stop on hl2 for the day then it is fine but I ignore that warning at my peril.

Even after building up a tolerance of playing a !little each day the max I can take is 40 mins.

The trigger for me is the spinning around. Strafing is fine but turning hits me hard.
The same is true for alien isolation , retro arcade and pretty much any 1st person game where you turn around on the spot

Not ordering yet. I can't run it on my system as the GPU I have installed isn't up to it. I'm waiting for Pascal as the next tick in my tick-tock upgrade/build cycle and by the time that's landed all the questions about Rift (and Vive) support for ED should have been sorted out and I'll pick the best option then.

Thanks, though, to all those who will be blazing the trail :D

i`m wondering on the pre-order, since they didn`t charge our CC yet, comes march/april will they charge the price at the exchange rate at the time of the placed order or at the time of the shipping date. ? we might be in a big surprice if our dollors keep going down the way it is.

Yep it will be the rate at the time of billing/shipping.. If there is a complete market crash we could be in for $5000 :) Jk. (no seriously)
I think the AUD is likley to get to .65 so 781/.65=$1201 This is my worst case outlook. Or it could rebound on a bounce or recovery in the china outlook.
