I'd love to see Frontier's take on that adorable goose!
Australia Animal : Nobody understands my australian choice, and it's totally okay, it's just purely personnal, Cape Barren Goose is one of my favorite bird, I dunno why!! Love their fluo beak, like a tennis ball! I've updtated just after the list with feedbacks!
South America Animal : I don't really agree, because there is the Lama in the pack, so the tropical/jungle vibe is not a prerequisite I think. Also they are so cute and very common in zoo, I really wanted to put them somewhere!
Aquatic animal : I would LOVE Manatee, for me it's more iconic than the Walrus that is VERY rare in captivity. But I also know that this will never happen, because there is no animal in Planet Zoo that is not at least a bit terrestrial.
I quoted you in the wrong thread but I figure since its about a goose this is a fine thread to quote you in. I feel like since its your hypothetical pack you have no need to take feedback too seriously. Although, its cool you did. IMO the goose is common in zoos and I think its just as welcome as any other Oceanian bird. I mean the Black Swan is more iconic... Yet, I could see almost as much value in Cape Barren Goose. And, since its a favorite I'd be happy for you if Frontier did add it as an oddball.

Despite technically being duck, the African Pygmy Goose is one of the smallest waterfowl species in Africa. It is also a perching duck, though it is technically closer related to other dabbling ducks. I personally saw these guys at the Bronx Zoo and I love them!

Also, I think one of the reasons that I want waterfowl so bad as it’s one of the only ways to get more tropical bird species that can work in a mixed species tropical habitat. While we could technically get things like the roseate spoonbill from the Flamingo rig, Frontier has yet to make a wading bird that small. I think our closer odds are with waterfowl. I mean, we have a good number of options:
  1. African Pygmy goose mentioned above
  2. Any whistling duck species
  3. Brazilian teal
  4. Argentina ruddy duck
That’s all off the top of my head, and I admittedly don’t know enough about Asian and Australian waterfowl species. This is one of the reasons I want the white face whistling duck so bad. It can work in tropical mixed species South America or African habitats. It wouldn’t feel out of place with Pygmy hippos or with capybaras. We don’t really have any good tropical bird house birds in game, so I think this is our best chance.

That’s not even considering not-penguin sea birds. Where once again it seems like our best choice will be waterfowl.

I want to highlight some other waterfowl that can also work in South American tropical houses: Brazilian teal, Argentina Ruddy Duck, Southern Screamer, and the Fulvous Whistling Duck! All are very cool, and can also provide some flair to any tropical house.

I made a post in the summer speculation thread, but I should’ve done one here too! This is an appreciation for cold water waterfowl. Namely sea ducks! I’ll just highlight the one I saw back in April, the common eider! I really hope Planet Zoo gets other sea birds besides penguins. If we are lucky we will get a pelican. If we are very lucky maybe we will get a puffin or a sea duck like an eider or harlequin duck! Here’s hoping!

Today I wanted to highlight a species of goose native to the pacific islands! It is of course the Nene, which I do think would be a perfect animal to the game. While not common in captivity, we do have the saiga and proboscis monkey so I don’t want to hear it.

My question for all of you, is this: Frontier will let you add 5 waterfowl into the game. While it can be whatever you want, Frontier wants you to pick as diverse of options as possible! So what would you add?

Seems that the nene, black swan and mandarin duck remain a consensus for now:
  • Southern Screamer
  • Magpie Goose
  • Mandarin Duck
  • Nene
  • Black Swan
For my list I tried to encompass as much of anseriform diversity as possible - first with the screamer (Anhimidae) and magpie goose (Anseranatidae) to represent their respective families, and then a duck, a goose and a swan from Anatidae.

While not common in captivity, we do have the saiga and proboscis monkey so I don’t want to hear it.
Fortunately I don't think there's much an argument against the nene in regards to captive presence, there's almost 120 holdings for them in Europe alone.
