As much as some keep saying Wings will allow trade protection, I'm going to predict this will be barely used in practice except between friends where an experienced player helps their friend, or another new player, get into the game safely. Wings will be much more combat-orientated

God I hope so. I don't need anyone to help me go to A-B together.

Indeed. But if I see a new player struggling on the forums and looking for help, I'll consider adding them in game and running missions/trade with them if they like. It'll open up a whole new avenue of game play that, currently, isn't really viable.

I imagine those people who want to play together will utilise the Wings mechanics, irrespective of if its trading, mining, pirating etc etc

Who in their right mind would risk working in packs to run trade routes (or hire protectors) when it'll simultaneously reveal your hard-sought profitable route AND just deplete the supplies that much faster?

Well, those of us who don't like trading really won't care one way or the other about your routes. You could safely tell me every route you have and I wouldn't care or do anything about it.

That said, I think the only thing I'd like less than trading would be watching someone else trading, so folks like me probably aren't interested in escorting you, either, unless there was a very high chance of misadventure on the way.

I don't ever see traders "hiring" protection.. Silly from a traders perspective, boring as bat droppings for the protector.. Might sound like an awesome idea, but in reality, ain't gonna happen...

1.2 will contain...

Player groupings
Improved comms with groups
Some stuff that was totally unexpected and had never been mentioned before
Bugs that were reported 100 times during beta that are still not fixed or pulled upon release
Some changes that are not in the patch notes and people start asking on the forums "Did X change?" until finally a dev or community manager drops by and says, oh yeah, we did change that.
Changes to something that is currently working, but regardless is changed for no understandable reason, which then totally breaks it.
NPC AI will become self-aware, packs of NPC ships will now hunt down all players and camp outside stations blasting them as they exit.
Nerfs
Boosts
New ships
A partridge in a pear tree

There, i think that covers it all. Looking forward to 1.2 myself. Its going to be a wild ride. :D

NPC Wings

Will there also be NPC wings, for internal consistency?

And will players be able to recruit NPC's as wingmen? This would be good for solo players, or those with only one or two friends to play with.

I know Sandro has already indicated this might not be in the current pipeline, when he stated that solo players will have to make multiple trips to complete large depot runs. But whether working together or with players, extending this activity to the NPC's would seem a good way to flesh out the AI and breathe some much needed life into the background game.

In combat zones there is already some NPC wings happening. I used to be able to fly right in the middle of several NPC enemy ships and maybe have one other attack me. Now I can have them all attack me.

Likewise when you go into a combat zone look around for a bunch of ships on your side, I've seen several flying together as wings so sticking with them makes life easier.

Yep i figured they were kind of there already - and arguably have been since the BBC days. But what i really mean is that NPC wings should be able to undertake the same kinds of roles and activities as player wings.

Also, NPC wingmen for solo players would seem a necessity - instead of making multiple depot runs, or tackling multiple assailants alone - as Sandro has recently alluded to - i'd prefer to be able to recruit NPC's to achieve similar balance to real-player wings.

If solo players aren't to be penalised or excluded from the full gaming experience, as Sandro has said. Some clarification from FD would be nice..

I was in an anarchy system earning bounties when three NPCs arrived and flew in formation. Shot at one and all three attacked me. Sounds like a wing to me.

Wings Update - AI wingmen?

I don't know if this was discussed, but will there be ability to hire AI wingmen into your group? Because with everyone, even NPC, flying in 4 ship formations, I feel the players that will fly alone (because they have no in-game friends or simply play solo) will be at HUGE disadvantage and will be just dog food for Wings.

NPC Wingmen

I hear a lot of talk and pandering over the player wings... but what happened to NPC wingmen which was actually a promised feature? Is it still on the horizon or abandoned?
