I have several ships in storage. Would love to hire NPC's to run them and make a few bucks. I'd have to carry insurance, of course. However, I think that would work.

I don't know if this was discussed, but will there be ability to hire AI wingmen into your group? Because with everyone, even NPC, flying in 4 ship formations, I feel the players that will fly alone (because they have no in-game friends or simply play solo) will be at HUGE disadvantage and will be just dog food for Wings.

No, not with 1.2, wings has nothing to do with hiring NPC wingmen, Micheal or Sandro confirmed this a few weeks ago, and contrary to what Skip Intro syas, nothing was mentioned about players hiring npc wingmen in the latest dev notes.

Well its certainly not a part of 1.2, Michael (possibly Sandro) confirmed this on a thread a couple of weeks ago iirc.

Interesting that the training missions have a wingmen section, and we've been able to choose factions since the first beta.. but they can't put 2 and 2 together for an update they're calling "wings".

i said this not long ago :D. Its in the tutorials, i'd so love it in the main game. Its a shame because i loved the original proposal with different types for hire and how they'll react to different situations. I'd love to save a few credits and get a nasty cheap wingman only to be ambushed because my cargo was worth a decent amount.

1.2 "wings" for me isnt wings, its just the basic group settings that should of been out on release.

I hope solo and solitary open players will soon get the option to have NPC wingmen, so they can tackle the harder challenges. With of course a simple system to give orders such as "on me", "attack my target", "attack all targets"...

Question about Wings Update?

Not seen this anywhere, but apologies if it has already been stated...

Will wings only be real commanders together or will we be able to hire AI to form up the wing.

Only asking as I tend to play in the Mobius group and tend to be in unfrequented places. Don't want to miss out on having other ships to fly with but don't want to necessarily fly to an area with other commanders.

Also, for those in solo it could make some of the USS and piracy wings too challenging.

1.2 - Wings Update and Munitions

Hey all,

I was reading the PC Gamer article on the 1.2 update, and this stuck out to me:
"We could add things like cargo depots which allow multiple wingmen to load and deliver cargo for the same mission, and offer new ways for ships in a wing to interact with one another, like having limpets to transfer fuel between the wing or allowing players to take formation around stellar bodies and perform advanced linked scans."

Awesome - but now, expanding on this.

I propose that munitions be added in as cargo you can carry.

What sort of munitions? All of them. For each weapon type and size, there is a specific type of munition. Do you have Class 2 cannons? You need Class 2 cannon munition. No, your class 2 cannon ammunition cannot be used with your class 1 rail guns.

What does this do? It adds in another role for players! Now you can carry munitions to a battlefield to restock your buddies, leaving them more open to use things like cannons and railguns without worrying so much about running out of ammo. It also means that the Type 9 in the Combat Zone becomes a prime target to both attack and defend.

In short, more strategy, more options, more awesome.

Like the idea's here, and could also be useable for long range explorers to carry extra reloads in their cargo.

Like to see the difference in explosion radius when a ship carrying an extra 100 tonnes of explosives goes off too.......

I tell you what we need to go with Wings.....

....some properly Dangerous systems - the kind where you get interdicted by pirates all the way in to the station. The kind that unless you have kevlar underpants and a tough ship, you won't survive.

What we need to go with them are missions from surrounding systems that make it financially worthwhile going there and taking the risk, and losing the odd ship in the process.

The kind of place that a wing of 3 fighters and one cargo cow could fly to together and have a sense of enormous success in arriving and handing the mission in, then having a pan-galactic-gargleblaster in the bar afterward.

Not every system, but the low security ones need to become lawless, dangerous places that will leave your hull in tatters. The kind that when you arrive, the ship's computer says "warning, low security system" in red.

As above - riches should await those brave enough to make the journey.

The kind of place that gives those posters here on the forum that are angling for something to "do" in their A grade Anacondas and Pythons, something to "do". I can imagine CMDR [Madeupname] arriving in his pimped Anaconda, dropping out into supercruise and seeing a fighting wing of Pirate Vipers heading his way and having to fight his way clear. The kind of place that having escaped via supercruise, said CMDR should be chased down again and again, leaving broken Vipers in his wake. Having survived, he arrives at the station and delivers the much needed weaponry/medical supplies and cashes in on the few hundred thousand credits (more than the ammo and repair costs, of course), before taking a delivery mission of technical data back to the nearest Imperial outpost for similarly high values.

These systems should be virtually unsurvivable for lone Eagles, deathtraps for Haulers and Adders and even Asps should quake in their skins at their name.

The stories of derring do, the twitch streams of intense combat, NPC's jumping in to the encounters as bounty hunters to assist, only to get blown away.

Supported by community goals to improve security in that system, this could be a lucrative money earner and a real challenge for the bravest of commanders.

You get the picture......

You can then extrapolate from there to the combat zones, with similar danger - military interdictions left and right. Imperial Barons being lynched by Federal patrols, Federal Ensigns being allowed free transit to the combat zone to assist in the expansion efforts. Imperial rewards in these systems, attacking the Federal combat points would be high, to reward the bold Imperialists for making the challenge. Once again, community goals, only open to ranking Imperials and Federals pit them against each other.

etc etc

<keeping my fingers crossed for the future>

Agreed.

All we know for sure is that we are getting more/larger USSs. Hopefully it goes deeper than this in the initial March release, or Soon (tm) after.

You mean where Anarchy and Feudal systems meant death by laser from multiple pirates working in a group....sounds vaguely like this game I played 30 years ago.... ;)

Sorry to be the fly in your ointment, but if that could be done 30 years ago on 8-bit computers then I'm sure it could have been in the game by now if FD had wanted to do it. It isn't, so I think we have to assume they don't. :(
