Engineers Thermal Shock and Thermal Cascade. Anyone able to give me a simple explanation

OK, can someone give me a simple explanation of these two effects and what it really means in game? I've done some googling and come up pretty empty other than the official description over and over.

Thanks in advance.

Thermal shock laser delivers damage plus heat that boils your modules and your ship.
Thermal Cascade similar for kinetics, boil you up with shield on
Both of them are cancer with limited use in Pve and responsible for the lack of diversity in pvp

They seem to be the new must have killing weapon. With no real long term defence. NPCs equipped with this and speed engineering, are hard to escape alive form, in a standard A spec Clipper.

I believe that they go straight through shield, straight to there target.

They are nonsensical weapon mods that move combat in ED from science fiction into the arcade space shooter realm.

Thermal shock is a special available to lasers and multi-cannons. It affects both shielded and unshielded targets and (in 2.1) imparts modest heat.

Thermal cascade is a special available to cannons and missiles. It affects shielded targets only and (in 2.1) imparts major heat from cannons, massive heat from missiles and catastrophic heat from packhound missiles.

All the above is changing enormously in 2.2 ... there are two stickied threads by Sandro in the Beta forum about it.

Incidentally, afaik NPC's do not currently have access to any specials, including these.
