This game is still full of bugs :(

Thanks to the return of Galnet and CGs, I'm doing things that I haven't done in a long time, like combat zones. I'm surprised at the number of old, well-documented bugs that remain in the game. I normally don't encounter these specific bugs when out exploring, so I was hoping the last batch of updates might have fixed all these little nuisances. I didn't encounter anything "game breaking", but the old phrase "death by a thousand cuts" does come to mind.

I'm guessing we're not getting any more updates with Odyssey just around the bend. I just hope that Frontier includes bug-fixes for the base game (which will be Horizons going forward) as part of the Odyssey update. Like I said, all the bugs I encountered are well known, well documented, and have been around for a long time. The new narrative and associated community goals are great, but these bugs... ---v

Disclaimer - I'm not trying to be political with that image, just using current events (and pretty hair) to make a point about Elite.
This is one of the main reasons I do not play much anymore, reporting the bugs has no affect and each attempt to fix or add functionality more or less fails and breaks something else. I really do hope that Odyssey turns this around but FDev's track record speaks for it self. :(

Sometimes I'm sure they let the interns fix the bugs.

There's this message that pops-up when you launch the game and it can't connect to the servers (either it's a upnp thing or a server thing, I dunno). If it can't make the connection there's no point in starting the game because the game then starts with no working server connection and you can't play it anyway. So when you get the popup it cancels the launch and returns to the launcher. That's how it should work.

A while ago there was a spate of this message turning up (I'm not sure why maybe they were having a bunch of server issues) and FD received a whole lot of reports saying "This dumb pop-up is stopping me from playing the game FD, fix it you !$#@$#".

So what happened? Someone "fixed" it so the popup doesn't cancel the launcher anymore. Instead it starts the game, with no server connection, and it loads but you can't play. So you have to quit out to the launcher and restart, wasting all that time it took to load the game.

Clearly someone with zero understanding of how stuff works was assigned to the "problem".

Yep, definitely in the careful what you wish for basket.

I have taken up cursing for the first time since I started playing ED. They might not be bugs to some but they are absolutely bugs to me.

Some more for ya :-

Cargo bays on Installations and Mega-ships dont eject the cargo.
Filtering for expansion doesnt work on gal map. (Basically we need to be able to filter for factions that are in multiple states).
Pulse wave thingy is bugged.
NPC ships re-engage destroyed engines if anyone (player or npc) enters the instance. You can also create copies of an NPC using a wing exploit.

Given FD's history of continued release of buggy 'new features' without fixing or fleshing out hardly any of the existing game I see no reason to believe that FD will change their behavior going forward with the new release. After almost 4 years of continuous play I've come to believe that they have no intention of fixing the core gameplay issues and these will simply be migrated to the new Odyssey code base.

Until Odyssey comes out I will likely not even boot the game up (haven't in a while) and will wait to decide then if I'm going to continue playing this game. So for now I'm driving a destroyer that has my corvette on board (for local excursions) and trying to get familiar with this new game and to learn how it works. WIP so far, but I'm flying spaceships. :)

I'll continue to check in here from time to time to get Odyssey progress updates.

I'll give you a subset specific to this last CG. Note that most of these are intermittent - sometimes these problems occur, other times not.
  • CZs not giving the option to pick a side
  • Kills (legitimate) in a CZ not rewarding bonds
  • Rubber-banding when other players share instance in CG (I'm told this is an SLF-related bug)
  • Request Docking glitches
  • System chat requires double selection to work (otherwise chat goes to local)
  • Bond reward when cashed in doesn't match rewards tallied from info panel

I'm sure are others I'm forgetting ATM, crap that gets me in the middle of heated combat, for example. If you need a full and detailed list of all the bugs, just visit the official issue tracker. There's no need for me to copy-n-paste that list here.
Saw not being able to pick a side and no bonds from kills. Also from last night:

No CZ showing at all when entering system. Appeared 1-2 mins later after multiple SC drops/engagments
Wing member dropping over 1mm away from wing beacon entering CZ several times
Capital ship, last 2 heat relays showing -100% health and being impervious to damage
Targeted CZ twice changing to nearby fleet carrier without any action from me

Also saw rubber banding, enemy shields/hull showing differently for myself/brother etc., all standard network issues except that we play online games together regularly and only ever see the network issues in Elite.

Call me a 'lucky guy', but I didn't experience any annoying or game breaking bugs so far and I just returned to the game after 1,5y hiatus. And I play on Linux. Have occasional hiccups when entering/exiting the supercruise, but nothing game breaking, no crashes etc. In fact, I'm happy we/I don't have stuttering while entering and during the hyperspace warp.

Simply put, the game runs smooth on Linux with no fps or stability problems.

Ah, I'll have to keep an eye out for those. I'm sure I run into bugs all the time, but never pay them much attention unless they won't go away after several retries. If I see some kind of failure, typically I just try again without giving it a second thought. I haven't ran into something catastrophic in quite a while.

I wonder if much of these might be network code related. Hopefully, the network code received some solid re-work in Odyssey.

Add:
  • CZ doesn't end when victory is declared (robbing me of actually winning the CZ)
  • enemy ships jumping out without actually spooling up their FSD (and while weapons are deployed)

These are actually new bugs for me, though I bet they are old bugs that were killed and later resurrected.

I've just started playing again and they do fix some bugs, the commodity screen is finally curved in VR, I don't see missing squares of planet textures and orbit lines are in the FSS, but the shadows... are absolutely horrendous, I don't remember them being this bad - jittering and flickering like lunatics having a day off in the asylum.
Maybe not a bug<?> but terribad implementation and fair enough, I'm not a programmer but if I was I wouldn't think they were acceptable.

Edit: Search zone salvage site reticule is still bugged - must be nearly a year?!?

This. Still.

I'll just agree to disagree.

I've never played a game that's had all bugs fixed before new content was released and never played a game where no new content was released because bugs were outstanding.
....
Sure, but I've never played a game where entire activities are broken for months verging on years.

It is simply inexcusable that things like smuggling are still entirely non functional.

This isn't a "right click the wrong pixel in a menu and CTD" which can be worked around. We're talking, say, if Capture the Flag mode in a game like Call of Duty didn't work at all. or only reported 33% of captures.

Edit: scratch that, i have heard of games like that. They're generally considered failed products.

Totally, you should lay it on real thick and pretend this is a "failed product" because that makes everything else sound super reasonable.

Well, imagine if something like handing in combat bonds didn't work right now? Where would the current CG's be?

Meanwhile:
Any CGs using illegal/stolen goods: Can't happen anymore because of extant bugs.
The last CG focusing on tissue sampling with research limpets: Cancelled, never run again because of the bug which, eventually, got fixed and has since been reintroduced in the game.

So, if there was a bug with CZ submission, it's "super reasonable" for FD to just can these CGs and never have a CZ CG ever again, hey?

Darn clickbait title. I thought this was supposed to be a fun OP providing memes and superficial, disconnected rants like on reddit.
Instead it's all this serious debate about real concrete problems and issues.

mumbles and walks away

Apparently, all frontier need to do is not give everyone cobra 4's and their integrity is secure.

Its the community demographic that values frontier beyond software quality that give them the option of disregarding all the bugs. Those lot are completely unhelpful apart from to frontiers marketing efforts.

Of course it doesn't matter, but just in case, i've also stopped playing content that has gross user facing bugs that are in the core experience as well.

Out of the content i do play, what self slaps themselves in the face quite often is use a docking computer but manually lower the landing gear on a carrier. Or every time you see multiple blue hud elements overlap. Or every time you go to advanced maintenance in the station services ui. The score they go to bed with we cant change it.
