This is game needs a 'What's New' section

If I was a new player playing this game, and I wasn't a regular visitor to these forums, or ED channels on YouTube:


  • I wouldn't know about the new C & P
  • Or Thargoid Scouts
  • Or Interstellar Factions
  • Or the new Trade tools
  • Or the Cheifian
  • Or Material Traders
  • Or Tech Brokers
  • Or Remote Engineering

....and several other things.

Compare that to firing up Diablo 3 - I don't play that a lot these days but when I do, I fire her up and BLAM! A splash screen is there, telling me about all of the new features added since I last played that game.

Frontier, you've worked hard on 3.0, and I for one appreciate it. There's no need to be so quiet about it for new players or for those who dip into this game now and then.

Yeah that'd be good. There are a few online games with an option on the launcher or start screen which would show you all the latest patch notes, changes and added features (like Warframe or FFXIV). Not to say Elite needs to do what other games do, just that it would be a good addition.

Or the Newest Patch Notes Topic.

Hell. I'm looking at the Launch Menu where I select what version of the game I want to play before I even press the play button and there's two boxes at the very top telling me what's new and available and what issue is currently the worst right now.

They're not being quiet. People are being obtuse.

It's not about being obtuse, it's about convenience. If I want to know what's in the latest patch I want to be able to get to the relevant information quickly instead of digging for it from among other irrelevant information.

Casual players don't hunt all over the web for information, they don't click a tiny What's New box on the launcher either. Of course *we* know what's going on, but for the people who don't have a shortcut to eddb on their desktop, having a splash screen would be great. Diablo 3 does a great job at this, since I'm a casual with that game. Once every couple of months I fire it up and first thing the game does is tell me all the new stuff I can do. I'd never know otherwise.

I have a friend who plays Elite very casually. He mostly just runs missions from time to time. I don't even think he's past a Cobra yet. He had no idea about the Thargoids until I told him, this was AFTER 2.4 launched. He didn't know about the Barnacles, hyperdictions, none of it. Pretty sure he only knew about the Engineers because they were icons on the galaxy map and the default ones sent some messages.

1) Log in to Launcher menu.
2) Click on "Latest Patch Notes" link at the top of the launcher menu.

Two steps.

It took me TWO STEPS.

And if we switched that to "Clicked Play" instead then we get the Diablo 3 method out listed above.

What were you saying about "Fast and Convenient?"

That's all well and good but how many casual players are clicking on that? Patch notes are mostly bug fixes. They don't care.

Does not exist on consoles.

Out of curiosity, does the Steam version have the same launcher?

I'm on PS4, we don't get a launcher. But it's good to know the PC version has it, I was not aware of that.

I kind of agree. And then I remember that anytime I see one of those splash screens when I load a game, I'm just "yeah, yeah, whatever - just get on with it and let me play". :) So I never read them anyway.

Agree. Also, an "Interesting\Cool Things to Find" topic that is concise and maybe not open to comments so as to avoid the dreaded "megathread".

It's a good idea. As the OP said, it is standard practice with a lot of other games.

Now that the core foundation of the game is set, and Frontier is going back to polish different parts of the game, a new launcher with more information for casual players who don't regularly visit the forums could be a good idea. The current look for the launch screen is three years old at this point; it could use a refresh.
