Horizons Time scale for the ability to walk around our ships?

They announced Horizons in August last year. We should be hearing about what's in store around the same time this year.

I think its going to be the next season. Just a feeling though

Yep, probably the season after Horizons.

please Frontier.. tell me we will be able to see the insides of our ships before we get such another complex thing like landing on planets with atmospheres.
Even if it's just the ability to walk around our bridges/cockpits to start.. i can imagine it's such a smaller task then planet related mapping, clouds water etc.

They have to add the following:
- ship boarding
- first person combat (guns, laser-pistols, blasters, knives, armor etc.)
- walk-able ship sections like the cockpit, living quarters, cargo bay etc.
- walking on planets should be easy, because we can already land there.

I'm in agreement with Metatheurgist on this. Much as I'd love atmospheric landings next year, I think a realistic assumption is 2-3 years from now. It's not just textures flight dynamics and slapping a few clouds down, potentially it will entail weather patterns, seasons, populated areas and cities. The mind boggles at what they would have to do to pull off planet Earth at 1:1 scale.

FPS elements will probably take considerably less development, and yet open up a wealth of new gameplay such as EVA, wreck salvage and investigation, boarding actions, infiltration missions, social areas and enhanced player interaction.

you just got me super syked for the future of this game... and I already know what they're planning... just when you mention earth, in 1:1 scale...

As 2.3 is the Commanders avatars, i will not be surprised if that feature follows as well for season 3 and some EVA too ;)

Would you eat a sock? ;)

That was under a rock?

If we can walk around our ships, can we get a manual field maintenance unit to let us fix the power generator?
I bagsy being Chief O'Brien!

<Mr Scott>Aye, it has to be fixed. It'll take at least 8 hours but I can do it for you in 2.</Mr Scott>

Of course to fix things like a fusion reactor, you'll need to purchase a tool kit first. Oh, and a radiation suit (and matching tie).

Here's an idea. If you REALLY want a feature, maybe organise a poll. And when that Poll reveals that feature X is the most wanted. Everyone that took part goes to the ED store, and buys something that costs £10 or more. If 10,000 people took part in that poll, thats £100,000 in Frontiers coffers, targeted at that feature. They get the point and assign resources to make that feature happen.

I am joking of course.

But that's the same thing as an in-game community goal, isn't it?
<youngfrankenstein>It....Could...WORK!</youngfrankenstein>

It is my belief that this is will not be until season 4 at least. The reason being that there is so much content they will need to build.. For example ship interiors for every ship. Currently only the cockpits are built. That's a lot of graphics work right there... Not to mention the overhaul the stations will need.

Not to mention the diversity of life that will need to be created, not just animals but the plants, trees, even lichens and molds unless we want every terrestrial planet to be similar and have similar life a-la-No-Man's-Cry.

Maybe scale the feature as movement becomes more complicated and more content is developed. In-ship only at first (Where's the head?), then around ship/SRV in hangar, then around parts of space and terrestrial stations (think lots of "restricted" areas) and then free movement on planets (modeling reduced/no gravity should be interesting) and in space (free-fall).

I agree both are technical challenging but on the Atmospheric worlds are going to be a metric ton of work. The water worlds for sure, planets that have life even more so. I am looking forward to both, but I agree it will add so much more for the immersion if I get up out of my seat, walked back to where the SRV is and climbed in and then when down to the planet, instead of the black screen we have now. This is not a jab at Frontier since I would rather have the planet landing and the black screen then have to wait until the FPS part is done.

I am really looking forward to it... if we could get out of our SRV and walk around on the surface getting another level of scale. Also I remember a early David Braben video where he shows some of the inside of the Type-9 and said that the inside of the Anaconda is the size of most FPS levels (CAN'T Wait to see that someday!)

it would be one thing being in an srv, but just imagine. Being able to step out your ship and look up at the epic-ness your piloting? Even doing an EVA out the man door on top of an anaconda. It would be the best "debug" camera you could ever ask for lol. Suspect a damaged thruster? Suit up and go look for yourself! :D
No more of that camera that can't get closer then 40' to your ship :p

I often walk around the cockpit on the Vive. Also when landed it's pretty cool to enable debug camera and place it at human height above ground, then walk on ground and admire the ship and surrondings.
