It does apply to a "video game" because there are still things that are "common sense" in gaming.

Like it is "common sense" that cheating at a game, gets you punished (in the case of online games, banned).
This isn't just and Elite Dangerous thing - it applies to all gaming. So it is "common sense" for anyone who plays games not to cheat.

So the phrase and it's correct usage is fully applicable.

And within "specialised" fields there is also "common sense";

If I walked into a biochemists lab, it's "common sense" to not just pick up 2 random filled containers and mix them for giggles.
It's "common sense" when working at a garage fixing cars, to not go under a car with a cigarette in your mouth.
When working as a Chef, it is "common sense" to keep your attention on your hands when chopping / preparing items.

Because even in "specialised" areas, there are some things you should fully understand before going anywhere near that area, principles that you should have been taught as a child and is "common sense" regardless of where you are or what you're doing.

And in the realm of communication (which was my point), it is "common sense" that people use the same definitions for accurate, clear communication everyone understands.
Otherwise we might as well go back to grunts and chest beating - because changing the definition on the fly because it suits that persons mood makes as much sense as going "ug ug, uh um um" at us.

I miss the days when we debated game mechanics rather than bar room philosophy.

You're the one complained about the current conversation.
I'm just trying to point you to what you asked for, chat about game mechanics.
As you don't like what we were talking about here.

Or were you just trolling as you had nothing to add to the current conversion?

Come on! Sense!

"Common sense" is the most badly named thing ever.

The only real time you hear it mentioned is when someone says "what happened to common sense?" right after someone did something stupid.
A bit like with the OP in this thread, when it is common knowledge that playing open makes the person doing it an available target for others with or without a reason.
"common sense" would be don't play with people who can shoot you, if you don't want to be shot at.

Turned out that "common sense" wasn't so "common" after all.
Especially as this isn't the first one of these threads.

Nope, that is an oxymoron.

Hahahaha...
Baloney.

We have people on this forum, every day, who think killing another Cmdr for no reason is against the rules, or that C-logging is fine.
That is despite the devs saying otherwise, in black and white.

Heck, this thread/OP is a perfect example!

Everything else you wrote is horsepucky, too.

no, it's just an abused term. common sense is nothing else than 'common understanding' which pretty much amounts to 'shared beliefs'. substitute 'common sense' for 'shared beliefs' every time it is mentioned and you'll see how the term is misused and how little sense it makes in the phrase. like all abused words it becomes pretty meaningless pretty quickly, it is nowadays just an euphemism to reinforce whatever the speaker deems 'the right thing' to be.

I got a question everyone. Do you feel it's worse to get spaced by an npc or a cmdr? Why? 'Cos a real person randomly\deliberately blew you up because they could? Or a ship controlled by the game got the better of you?

Never got into a dog fight with someone real yet, PS4 open is quite empty. Been zapped left right and centre by every type of ship possible in open and solo by npc. Seen the rebuy screen many times (over 30!) I'm just not a very good gamer. But it IS the game. Always was always will be. Space is large and dangerous you could get blown up. Bounce off the mail slot boom, slam a high grav world landing boom, get bounced by a wing mining/salvaging boom, has res boom, cz high or low boom. See a pattern yet? Ok I am really bad at this game but I love it.

Play cod or battlefield, fortnite destiny gtav. Doesn't matter which online game you will die by players or npcs. It's gaming.

It is not a matter of who kills you as much as how they go about it, there are limits that some CMDRs cross but NPCs do not and there in lies the rub. There are some PvPers in these forums that do not accept that there are limits to what is considered acceptable PvP behaviour (or in-game behaviour relating to direct interactions with other CMDRs in general). Despite what they try to propagate, FD do not consider unconstrained PvP intended nor acceptable in general - this is covered by the EULA and ToS.

Further more, FD have tried to mitigate the more toxic PvP behaviours with both in-game reporting tools (since at least 1.4) and (as of 3.0) punitive C&P measures to discourage "seal clubbing" (and to a degree "salt mining") behaviours.

ED is also not a PvP focused title - it includes it and supports it - but it is not a primary goal of the gameplay - unlike COD/BF/Fortnite/PUBG/Quake and others.

Even GTA Online is subject to comparable PvP behaviour limitations (it is also not purely a PvP game) but in that game things are worse due to modding and cheating in general (which are reportable). In addition, unlike GTA Online, ED does not require players to play in Open (GTA has stuff locked behind Open gameplay that is not PvP specific) if they do not wish to be exposed to the more toxic PvP behaviours. In ED, player moderated Private Groups allow players to play with others and enforce their own code of conduct - be it PvE only or some other rule book. The Mobius private groups are a prime example of this.

When PvPers contact Frontier about their kill counts and if it’s ok to kill Commanders for any reason why are we never rebuked?

Some of the responses are down right complimentary!

Kill counts have nothing to do with certain toxic PvP behaviours being either inexcusable or prohibited. You can get high kill counts without engaging in the toxic PvP behaviours.

Some of the people I’m thinking of you would absolutely consider toxic.
Maybe, but ultimately if people don't use the correct channels to complain little is likely to be done to address the behaviours of those individuals.

I have little doubt that not everyone that should use the reporting tools actually do, and "cry wolf" syndrome may apply in some cases.

Either way, the point is moot - there are notional restrictions on PvP behaviours it is just enforcing them can be complicated.
