To Solo Play Players: If You Could Disable PVP, Would You Play in Open Play Mode Instead?

Explorers can sell data to the enemy. Just saying... :D
Oh you can sell your data to some faction instead of vast international organisation? I sell mine to United Cartographics, what they do with said data is their concern. Mine is that I get credits and tags. I do not know anything about some local vendettas. But as others have said, you could always send me a polite message, and tell me to take my data elsewhere. Instead of shooting.

Other modes were promised in kickstarter and people stumped up money on those promises, so "there should only be Open mode" isn't just exaggerating a preference, it's factually wrong.

As for "opportunity", I could indeed engineer a combat ship and fly it defensively, but I don't take up every opportunity presented to me; I'd run out of time if I did. In a game like this one I just do what I enjoy. No-one else gets to decide what that is.
Pretty many of us only wanted modernised sequel to classic Elite, or later Frontier games. Without all that drama and compromises that came with multiplayer game. We have allready lost a lot with Fdevs early decision to make this game multiplayer. No time acceleration, no modding for example.

This thread is making me happy i never bothered with ESO or Fallout 76. I imagine, since both of those games are the multiplayer instalment of a long running single player franchise, they suffer from the same issue of having a large playerbase of people who dont actually want multiplayer (thus preventing the multiplayer being implemented in a way i would consider optimal)

A huge investment in time and effort for something the vast majority of players simply have no interest in
If you're not engineering and improving your ship you might as well not even bother to play the game. It's the equivalent of a "leveling cycle," in other MMO's. You put in the time to get and customize the gear. It's not a "huge," investment. Casually, it takes a few months.

In the opinion of some, certainly. Not all players share that opinion though - and we all bought a game with three game modes which affect the shared galaxy (even if some players can't accept that others can choose not to play with them / aren't forced to play with them).

Indeed - players have that opportunity, however some lack the inclination to fly around in a tough ship simply because it's not how they want to play the game - and other players can't tell them how to play the game. Some players don't play this game for the combat element....
I'm not telling anyone to engineer their ship. They simply have the opportunity to do so and the choice is theirs. If they choose not to then they should not complain about being on the wrong side of an armed confrontation and getting shot to pieces, no matter how rare that occurrence is.

Nevertheless, regardless of whether or not combat is an interest, building a sensibly defendable ship is in easy reach for all and would relegate the general hyperbole in this forum described as "ganking/griefing," to mere annoyance.

Go to Jameson Cobra. Relog, relog, relog, kill an explorer, relog...
Yep riveting gameplay!🤪

Quite.

It depends which game mode one prefers to play in - as the survivability requirement is somewhat different between non-optional NPC encounters and encounters with players intent on PvP.

There should only be open mode. You've got the opportunity to engineer a tough ship and learn how to fly it defensively or otherwise. Decent engineering and adequate piloting skills aren't unobtanium.

"A few months" IS a huge investment. And completely unnecessary for certain playstyles. I have a free Epic Alt that I envisioned as a pure explorer. I engineered exactly the one thing neccessary: The FSD. I did some missions and a bit of mining to buy a Phantom (because, as a VR player, I like the cockpit much more than the DBX), gathered the materials for my visit to Felicity and to unlock the booster, and off I went - he is somewhere between Colonia and Sag A* at the moment. Casually, that took me a few weeks (two, maybe three, I think?) to prepare. Imagine the horror if I had to spend months preparing for some lunatic that wants to blow me up for the lolz when I return to civilization.

Hands off my solo. I don't want to play with people who's only goal is to blow me up.

Different? Maybe, to a certain extent, but there's more overlap than not. A shield well built enough to run a High CZ would go a long way towards escaping a PVP encounter not going your way. It takes less than 30 seconds to escape with some very basic maneuvers. Let's not forget the overall rarity of this type of event. I've flown open near exclusively for years and have been ganked for no reason less than 4 times. Given that context, the rationale for solo just falls apart. Solo/PG takes the mmo out of an mmo.

CZs are optional content that no player needs to engage in.

It does not have to happen often to be too often - fun sponges aren't much fun to play with and no-one is obligated to provide them with any fun.
Given that context, the rationale for solo just falls apart.
For some, maybe - however as there's no requirement for any player to enjoy or even tolerate PvP to play this game as they bought it, others won't necessarily share that opinion.

that's no hyperbole. There are lunatics out there, and I REALLY don't want to play with them. Not even on a 1 to a million chance.
Who you describe as "lunatics," is the equivalent of getting struck by lightning ergo hyperbole. The sensitivity to this astounds me. Buil a proper shield, add an hrp, mrp, & learn some basic piloting skills, voila- unsuccessful gank.

Which might work for those who wish to engage in the ganker mini-game - however that mini-game is an optional extra in this game.
