Told I don't like simulation games..

Because I said "You couldn't pay me enough to do 1.8M Ls journeys." This is in regard to going to Smeaton in context, but really just any super long supercruise runs (Yep, never been to Hutton Orbital and never going). I just don't see the point in playing the game in a way that is essentially idle, regardless of payment. Call it a 'playstyle preference'. That isn't playing the game to me. If people like it, whatever, enjoy. I'm not intending to attack what you like doing.

The suggestion given was "invest in Netflix". Well, good sir, I have Netflix and if I am watching Netflix, I am not playing a game. Things I do queue up are streams, podcasts and music, things that I can both listen to and play a game at the same time. If I miss a couple minutes of a stream, no big deal, if I miss a couple minutes of a show or a movie, I'm going to want to rewind and revisit what happened. I'm either going to be invested in a story or a game that requires my attention.

What I fail to see is how this all translates into me not liking 'simulation games'. If we're even calling this a simulation game, I'd say that the amount of hours I've invested into the game and to this very forum disagrees with that notion quite a bit. I suppose it's pretty easy to say in a stream chat where hundreds of people are talking to each other as their ship flies itself to a distance. I suppose someone is going to have to break this down into layman terms for me since this notion of playstyle difference turning into me simply not liking the game at all is apparently too complex for my bird brain to handle. It feels like a stretch to me, but I've been wrong before.

I'm bracing for impact, hurt me daddy.

If you play a relaxed game style... this is IDEAL. Especially if you explore, haul, run passenger missions....

Youtube, BrainFood, or other educational material.
Binging on Netflix episodes.

The pause button is right there if I need to concentrate on boosting at a neutron star. Otherwise my eyes are on the iPad whilst I play.

If there is no space which can be experienced by the time you need to cross this space, then there would be no space game. Actually its all virtual, not real. So how to design a space game with space which is not exposed to me by the time I am travelling through it?

There must be someting which gives me the illusion of actual space, so I believe I play a space game. That something is the time. Are there other proposals?

I get it.. long range intra-system trips, like Hutton, are rather devoid of anything at all to do 99% of the time.
Yes, once in a great rare while you'll get than NPC that tries to interdict you. It either ends in an Evasion or a Run-and-Jump, or a short little dogfight, and you're back to long-hauling it across the void again.

With 57 Hutton Orbital trips under my belt, I know all about long-ranging it. I don't hate doing it, if I have a reason. That long trip is believable - space really is big, and these sorts of things just help to illustrate that. Space is also mostly empty, which these sorts of runs emphasize in ultra-bright neon colors. Opting not to do them does not mean you hate simulations, just that you hate having nothing to do. These are pretty much the equivalent of watching an old Windows 95 Disk Defrag running and moving the little squares around, or watching water boil.

You either have the patience for it, find something to occupy your idle time, or you don't and don't do these trips. That's all there is for it.

Sure, but that really doesn't have anything to do with what I was talking about or asking.

Welcome to the internet!

For such journeys, think of what you would do if you were being transported IRL for such a long time. Think boat or track vehicle across ice, or some similar semi-autonomous vehicle you don't have to worry about control of for some time. You'd probably get up, do something else, while keeping an eye on the progress of the vehicle to be able to grab control and adjust course if needed.

Now go do that IRL, since we can't do so in-game (yet). To me, that would be the only thing space-legs would be good for: Giving us something to do while hurtling through extended supercruises. We might only be able to step away briefly; if we had to do anything extensive such as repairs, dropping out of Supercruise would be the solution akin to pulling over at the side of the road.

:D S

Totally understand if people like doing these things. I've found other ways to experience the vastness of the galaxy and enjoy it. There really is no wrong way to play the game. [up]

It doesn't. Don't know who said that, but it was a bit of a silly thing to say. I play X Plane, but I never fly the big jets. That's because I'm not that keen on flying them and I don't like long journeys, so I just stick to the light aircraft (like a few real world pilots I know). Still enjoy X Plane though and that's about as sim as you get.

If you enjoy ED (whether it's a sim or not), what does it matter to anyone if you just don't do the bits you don't find fun?

Years ago I used to play a lot of World of Tanks. 9000 games. Then I realised every game had a 30 second count down, and hour many hours I must have spent staring at that thing. I've never been to Hutton, life might be to short for playing video games; it's certainly too short for self-inflicted screen gazing.

Why are you worried about someone else's opinion? if you don't like to do something in game than don't do it. If you no longer enjoy the game play something else.

I just don't understand all the rage on the forums.

Yea, I'm very worried and totally enraged. Going to have a hard to sleeping tonight. It's not fair man, just not fair. I suppose next time I'll just keep it to complaining about the KWS or Ship Stats.

Oh sure there is... 10 minutes surfing these forums, and we'll all find out we're playing some aspect of the game wrong... according to someone else ;-)

This^^

ED offers up a wide variety of 'challenges' suitable for all tastes.
Whether it's twitch based combat, the persistence required to traverse the galaxy, or the subtleties of SC flight.

I for one welcome the gentler pacing of SC, it's where I get to review my status, standings, materials, etc., and to plan my next moves.

You got me there, that much is certainly true. I also use the discussion forum incorrectly, apparently. Should probably just go boil my own head at this point. Anyone have instructions for that?

I'm easily distracted, so things like netflix is a no go. Once tried traveling watching a Bruins game and tunneled into a sun during a powerplay. Snooker is perfect, or cycling. While the fsd is charging or during SC if I find a shiny. Because I can keep my focus on the game 80% of the time.

The forums are a worse distraction.
