Newcomer / Intro tongue firmly in cheek......

a little advice for new Commanders......Things that WILL kill you :p

1) buying a docking computer will kill you  ( see multiple threads on forum....rants / ragequits etc lol) in fact the only thing that will kill you faster is...
2) ramming into a station wall / mahoosive ship at full boost will kill you  ( again see the threads/ rants/ ragequits^^)
3) "accidental" friendly fire ( ie shooting local fuzz when you actually meant to hit the ship attacking you) will kill you.....learn fire control.....its not a bug...its you lol
4) flying into the sun will kill you......excessive heat damage = exploding ship ( a most embarrasing way to go.....trust me ....)

and finaly.....whilst it wont kill you it may just make you pop a vein and post a quite hilarious rant/ragequit of your own....... never....EVER ....fly without insurance ( you can see the rebuy cost of your ship by pressing 4 whilst in your cockpit) .....cos not being able to afford it = instant shiney sidewinder and 1000cr restart

whilst there are a few bugged out bits, most issues are caused by a faulty input device between your chair and joystick!

the moral here is....stupidity will kill you every single time....trust me, its got me more than once lmao.....in fact ive fallen foul of most of the above except flying without being able to pay my insurance and there are a few more too.....but telling would take alot of fun out of the joy of finding out the hardway hehe.

have fun and bear these tips in mind.....its Dangerous out there.....you have been warned :D

While I agree with almost all of this, I've never ever had a problem with a docking computer. I'm lazy so I have one on each of my ships. Never crashed, never died, never ploughed into a ship or station. The worst I've ever had is my Type 6 scraping sideways over the landing pad after touchdown, but the shields take it so I'm never worried. Other than that it can take a while to land at outposts, but only if I let it take control too close to the pad, it seems to get confused and takes ages to line up right.
.
The only one of these I've ever fallen foul of is the friendly fire on police ships. Being partially sighted, I have trouble seeing the police before they cross my gun sights, but a quick jump out and back and it's all forgotten about. ;)
.
I must admit, I am one of the people who really do LOL when I read of people crying about not having the insurance money to pay for their destroyed ship. It's not rocket science to cover your ass, just common sense, of which those people clearly have none. :/ I would say 'You don't do it in real life, so why do it in a simulation?', but some people do drive without insurance, so that would be kinda redundant. :p

I would also like to add another point...them floating circular rock things (asteroids) can also cause you pain and shame...

Went mining in a hauler, dropped the shields for extra cargo space...while collecting bits of mined ore, hit the boost button.....faceplanted myself on asteroid.....pop!!! went the hauler and 40 mins of mining plus the cargo i had already collected.

Can still see in my minds eye.... the remains of a spread eagled commander on a palladium asteroid!

One, docking is absurdly easy in Elite : Dangerous. Plus, being able to dock quickly opens up several quite lucrative (but not so legal...) trading options. ;-)

Two, if you cannot afford the insurance for your ship, you will be given a loan of up to (I think) 200k credits. That's not enough for an Asp, but good enough for a Cobra. Having the insurance money is, of course, preferable. ;-)

very true regarding docking & fair point on the legality issues lol.....but 200k to replace a Cobra?? my rebuy is over 400k lol but i do have all the best toys ;)

Other things that will kill you:
Accidentally turning Silent Running on.
Forgetting to turn Silent Running off.
Hitting BOOST when you meant to deploy landing gear.
Trying to jump too close to a star.

Yeah I'm going to make a lot of people angry but I kind of feel like if I was selling starships in a universe where people regularly killed themselves by pressing the blue button instead of the teal button, I would sell a starship with a few safety precautions and then retire to a private planet from the vast pool of profits that generates? "No longer accidentally explode yourself because your shoe is untied" is a fairly powerful marketing line.

I get what you are saying.

But the brake and accelerator in a car are next to one another, pressing the wrong control will do the "wrong" thing. :)

Actually I've seen several people complaining and rage quitting, saying that after dying without enough to cover the insurance, they were not just back to the sidewinder, but back to 1000cr too. Is this true? Hasn't happened to me yet and I don't intend on allowing it to happen, but I would have thought that if you can't afford the insurance cost then you get the sidewinder but keep the money you had in the bank.

I just did this last night. I got my Cobra back and 1000cr. I thought about hitting the. ol' restart button. Then I thought screw that. I can go back to a well stocked Viper and have plenty of cash left over. :)
