Newcomer / Intro Top 5 tips for a new player.

Trading is simple if you remember a few certain rules.

The main one is NEVER try to resell a commodity in a system which has the SAME economy as the one you bought the commodity in.

Look at at the description for the commodity in the top right corner when u highlight it. It tells you which economies require that commodity and will therefore get you the best price to sell.

theres a simple loop for economy to economy trading which will help you learn the ropes.

High tech——agriculture——extraction——refinery——industrial——hightech

basically start in the high tech and buy items like land enrichment or marine equipment which will get a good price in an agricultural system, sell them there and buy food items, sell these in extraction system and buy raw materials which you then trade in a refinery system, here you buy finished metals that will be in demand at an industrial system and in that system you buy goods that will be needed in the high tech starting point.

this is just basic stuff but what it gives you is a feel for the markets and what sells best, it has the added bonus of building up your rep in several systems at once.

as a rule the more you PAY for a commodity the more profit you make when you sell it (providing it’s the right economy to sell it in) but remember the more expensive your cargo the bigger your losses if you die it’s risk and reward.

The first thing you should do on ARRIVAL at your selling point is check THE MISSIONS BOARD you may find someone is there asking for a cargo your carrying, again this generally pays more than straight selling in the market (the new mission payout system makes this doubly important now). Doing this can also give you a feel for what’s in demand at that station and gives you the choice of picking a mission to complete on your next trip or to bring those commodities in the hope the missions are still there next time you visit. The second Option eliminates the risk of dying to a mission npc but your not always guaranteed to find it’s still there. You can also find information missions that may well have your next destination as there target and are essentially free credits just beware of the risks involved.

If your going to do transport missions ALWAYS check the destination, look at the risk of hostile ship interference etc but most importantly CHECK THE DISTANCE TO YOUR TARGET STATION. Some stations can take a long time to reach in system so don’t get blinded by what you think is a good payout, The most infamous of these is Hutton, literally pack sandwiches a hot flask and bring a book.

DO NOT STACK TO MANY MISSIONS you will get swamped by mission npc.

NEVER FLY EMPTY always find a cargo.

"Never fly empty, always find a cargo"

As a committed, dyed in the wool, trader I agree. If nothing else I want to make enough to cover my petrol money* and even a very small profit is better than none. However, on this very forum only the other day an apparently experienced and successful player was advising new players never to carry cargos whilst mission running because they attract pirates. That person (and I am ashamed to say I have forgotten their name) was, of course, absolutely correct and at the same time totally wrong. It all depends what you are doing but, as a rule, when flying from one system to another finding a cargo, even if it means a couple of stops en route to do some trading, is a good idea. Except in certain circumstances, almost none of which involve inter-system travelling, pirates in PVE are not big a deal.

*Fuel costs are now so low in the game as to be hardly worthwhile including. They may as well make fuel free at stations as carry on with the present nonsense. What the game could really do with is some costs that make players think about whether a journey is worthwhile, along with a few other money sinks (landing fees?)

It's okay to fly without a rebuy. I do it all the time. The advice everyone is giving you here is that if you do fly without a rebuy, don't come on to the forums and complain about losing everything.

Also there's a lovely big free Anaconda waiting for you at Hutton Orbital. All you have to do is fly out and get it.

The new (3.0) market screen makes it easy to find a cargo if you know where you are going.

0. Select a target station, probably where you want to go to turn in a mission (or pick up a cargo for a fetch mission).
1. Open the market screen
2. The top right column of the table says "Galactic Average" by default the first time you enter. Click there.
3. Select the system and station using the galactic map. (You can click a button here to plot your route.)
4. Select the button to compare market prices.
5. Exit the galactic map
6. Select Export (to see goods you can buy here and sell there at a profit). (Use Import if you want to know what you can buy there and sell here for a profit.)
7. Someplace in here there is a save or OK button.
8. Scroll through the market and find the most profitable exports and buy them. Remember that some items that are legal here might not be at your target station.
9. Fly away and sell at a profit*.

* Profit not guaranteed if you wait too long, but it has always worked for me.

Thanks for the trading advice, that sure will help loads....

I do have a bit of a problem im unsure about though, ive been doing the disable power missions and have built up a little debt in the way of bountys, i know how to pay off to the correct faction, the only one that eludes me is aluin focus, i cant seem to find where to pay it off and i dong wanna be wanted seen as im playing in open... any advice would be great here... sorry to ask again CMNDRs 🙋

Get a docking computer

I won’t mention don’t fly without rebuy but one of the first things I do once I have enough money is get a docking computer. The latest versions are very good and, although it takes longer, I find I can use the time to do other things. But don’t use it if you have an illegal passenger as you cannot run silent, I disable it.

Love your free sidewinder. It's small enough to throw about, so hitting the toaster rack in the mail slot or bouncing off the landing pad of a station shouldn't matter much. Easy to fly and simple to do up, it's the perfect start point.

Try out different mission types from different factions/stations/systems. Start small and cheap and get bigger and bolder with experience and influence. The more successful you are for the same faction the greater your rewards can become. I'm an awful trader, a hopeless bounty hunter and plain can't find rocks to mine. Yet I can courier all day long, find that missing salvage and every now and then keep a passenger happy. Make your money your way.

You will get blown up. Either by NPC's or griefers or by bouncing off stuff or whatever. This is Elite. Get over it.

Fuel scoops are cool, even small cheap ones. I'm old school and always click refuel at every station I visit regardless. It is so uncool to run out of fuel.

It's a game, so have fun. I think it's brilliant that there is a huge galaxy for us all to explore. Enjoy dude.

Here are the best 5 I can think of for new players.

As the title says...

Im new, just downloading for xbox one as I type,

So if people can give their top 5 tips for a newbie that would be great.
As the title says...

Sure:
1. You can never get straight and complete answers to your forum questions.
for example: How do I configure my flight controller? There are tons of crappy incomplete answers, but no details.

Flight Controls option: See upload files (Flight Controls.pptx)

2. Do local missions getting easy boom/courier deliveries with Federation aligned factions, until your Federal Rank (panel 4, is Petty Officer) to get a permit to visit SOL. You must wait for your reputation to get to cordial or friendly to get missions to pay off more and when each rank reaches 100% (panel 4), look for Federal Navy missions to show up. If two show up at the same time only one is good for upgrading and you have to wait for another later.

3. Outfit a sidewinder or hauler (cheap) with max fuel, fuel scoop, max cargo, and Advanced Discovery sensor (1.5 million credits) to explore and get max jump distances. Trade using the elite Dangerous database (EDDB) and explore. Make sure you get galaxy map filters to "stars" tab, set all star filters to only scoopable stars (KGBFOAM), and set the apply filter to planning button. If you plan in longest jump instead of economical jumps you can later select economical planner if you run out of jump fuel (it happens). If you can't get to a star to scoop fuel, call the fuel rats web page ( https://confluence.fuelrats.com/display/FRKB/Fuel+Rats+Knowledge+Base) or (https://kiwi.fuelrats.com:7778/?_ga=2.119052672.885458693.1518418920-1472359317.1518418920). They will rescue you. If you are running out of oxygen, log out and wait for fuel rat instructions.

4. Outfit a strike ship (sidewinder, Eagle, Cobra MIII multi-crew) to do scanner missions with direct mount missiles and self-protection, watch the scanner mission videos to learn the techniques to take on skimmers and NPC ships guarding installations. Set your SRV controls as above and stay outside of red perimeter until you find the data link stations. learn to toggle your SRV turret, to use data link and to fire (mouse or flight stick) You can attack most generators and defense from the air, then set down you ship, deploy SRV at least 2 km away to avoid ship attack. Send your ship away (panel 3) and recall your ship (panel 3) when you are ready to be picked up. If you cannot recall your ship, you are too close to landing zone and need to drive away from it until the recall option is not red. You can stack some missions to the same planet. Learn how to fly to planet coordinates (fly east/west to reach one coordinate, then north/south the reach the other coordinate if you are searching for thargoid relic sites posted on-line. (https://ruins.canonn.technology/)

4. Start accumulating credits (the first missions you fly until you reach 10-20 million credits) by using your cheapest ship (Sidewinder, with minimal equip) going to nearby Resource Extraction Zones (REZ) in icy worlds with rings. Target a wanted ship, confirm it is wanted, then wait for the local Security System NPC pilots to take down the ship shields and hull to about 30-50%...keep the track locked and fire the last round killing the target, making sure you stop firing if any NPC flies in your path. It is easy to get a bounty on you until EF Devs fix the following:

Your best efficiency is setting up flight controls properly. (See attached FlightControls.pptx)
The most important ones after configuring flight controls are configuring your SRV and configuring your multi-crew, followed by configuring camera. Make sure you understand the following game bug until it is fixed and your survival and anger are minimized (you are not a criminal even if the game treats you like one).

You are missing the point because you are guessing at what happened and asking me questions instead of having the evidence logged by the system clearly in the log leading you to make sure you seek developers to fix the problem. Show me the evidence you have that I got a bounty for assault for weapons fire on a clean vessel. I'm sure you don't have that evidence and it is certainly not in my pilot's log (attached).

1. What clean vessel? It is not logged as "shot at" or by whom and that is the point. There is no evidence any clean vessel was targeted and "Shot" in my logs of the incident with the Anaconda. When I see a clean I move on to another target looking for a wanted target. That is how your game works, it always targets the system authorities first as you cycle through successive T's and G's that select the current and next target. It never just targets the "wanted" ships but it should.

2. your game needs to be clearly logging who was shot, when they were shot and by whom (either me or my guest multi-crew gunner). My evidence whosw the guner nor I target or shot at any clean vessel, so don't be guessing with me about what happened, you need to take the action to fix the problem so it does not happen to others and you need to add more of the evidence information to the log files before an NPC takes action.

3. What clean NPC was targeted and clearly had hits while I was targeting and shooting at the Anaconda?. you have no evidence of this I think, and there is no evidence in my log of any hit from me actually occurring, only a message from an NPC that "I'm hit", but no data on who hit him way before I was targeted by him and way before I had targeted the Anaconda and engaged with the wanted Anaconda. The NPC viper just decided to come after me with no evidence I was the one who hit his ship. It did not look to me like my guest multi-crew gunner hit him either, but since you don't log hit data or shot data accurately who can claim who shot who, or when? There is no evidence of a warrant or bounty issue on me either, he just came after me for no clear reason.

Here is the sequence of the log, read it yourself.

a. I target a Cobra MkIII, see it is clean and re-target another ship.

b. I target a federal dropship (A human commander) , see it is clean and re-target another ship.

c. I target an empire Eagle, see it is wanted and start firing on it. (The target lock: true remains locked on the Eagle and never goes target lock:false)

d. The Viper flies into my line of sight fire, and the target lock of the Eagle never drops to targetlock:false, but the viper picks up a target:lock true (how can I be locked onto two targets at the same time? (your game logic is not working right, that's how)

e. A different Eagle (system authority) shows a target lock:true. Again the wanted eagle I am shooting at never drops to target:false How can I be attacking and shooting at three ships all showing a lock at the same time? (your game logic is not working right that's how).

At no time are any "hits" logged into the pilot journal to prove who shot who (a major flaw in your code and logging of evidence).

f. Neither the System authority Eagle or the Viper ever send me a "clean" message to my cockpit, but three ships show a simultaneous target lock: true message (AT THE SAME TIME).

g. I never get any credit for killing the wanted eagle, the system Authority swarm all over it can kill it before I can and my "hits" don't count.

h. I target a "clean" anaconda, see it is clean and re-target another ship.

I. The "clean" viper and Eagle still show a "target lock: true status but are not in my HUD as being wanted or targeted by me... how can I have a lock on three targets at the same time?

j. A guest multi-crew joins the open seat in my ship (a risk and hazard to my ship and reputation if he screws up (You need to change this because it give no incentive for people to open multi-crew seats to anyone they don't know, having a result of almost no multi-crew positions open when you search on them, they come up "No available ship". You need to change the incentive and the risk to be acceptable, with all risk going to the crewmember who joins and who messes up.

k. My guest gunner sits idlewhile I target a wanted "Eagle" and start firing at it. 17 seconds later that target goes to target lock:false status and I get no credit for that ship being destroyed (another problem with your game logic).

l. Six seconds after the wanted Eagle drops track (target lock:false), the NPC police Viper say's "I'm Hit" with no evidence he was targeted by anyone prior (I cannot maintain a lock on more than one ship at a time, so I am not targeting him, I am on the wanted "eagle", unless he flies into my firing path (and they do all the time in your game logic, 5 at a time are often targeting only one ship.) Your NPC characters fly reckless like buffoons. There IS NO EVIDENCE I AM THEONEWHO HIT THE VIPER, NO HIT LOG, NO TARGET LOCK BY ME, NO EVIDENCE OF A BOUNTY PLACED ON ME.

m. 1 second later my multi-crew gunner guest has the courage to go fire control.

n. One of us (there is no log evidence which of us does) targets a federal drop ship and see it is "clean" and move on to another target.

o. My gunner targets a "wanted" Eagle and starts firing.

p. I target a wanted Anaconda and start firing.

q. The wanted eagle breaks lock (target lock: false) and the Anaconda breaks lock (target lock: False) and neither of us get credit for a kill.

r. 5 seconds after the Anaconda breaks lock, my ship is under attack by the System Authority Viper WITH NO TARGET LOCK TRUE, NO EVIDENCE OF BEING HITBY ME OR MY GUNNER, NO BOUNTY ISSUES, DESTROYS MY SHIP AND I END UP IN ADETENTION CENTER AS IF I AM a CRIMINAL and this just really es me off that your game logic works this way.

s. My whole point is read your own logs and get this problem fixed instead of telling me I did something wrong...

Did you wait a few seconds until after the scan had completed? YES look at the log.

I'm unsure of what you mean by the track lock dropping to false as I don't believe that's terminology we use here (Yes it is and is called target lock: true, target lock:false), do you mean that you lost the target? I mean your game logic drops a locked target and picks up additional ones simultaneously (System Authority NPCs who fly into your line of fire, THAT YOU DON'T TARGET, but they still all "lock" while you are locked on a "wanted" target)

It was actually made a lot harder to obtain bounties for hitting unwanted ships in the new crime update (I don't see that in the game behavior, bounties happen as soon as you target and fire on a clean ship) which is why I wait for the "wanted" status in the HUD and re-target the next ship using T or G

Is it possible that you'd had a warning already? (NO, LOOK AT THE PILOT JOURNSL LOG IT ISWHY I SENT IT TO YOU SO YOU CAN DO THE MATH and NOT GUESS AT POSSIBLE REASONS WHY YOUR CODE WORKS BUT MY ACTIONS ARE FLAWED.)

It could also have been that before you realised you'd already hit them multiple times in that second if you're using hard points with a high rate of fire. (NO, I WATCH MY TARGET AND STOP FIRING WHEN THEY GET IN MY WAY, THERE IS NO EVIDENCE I HIT THEM AT ALL IN THE LOGFILE and NO EVIDENCE I HAD THEM TARGETED AT THE SAME TIME I HAD THE WANTED SHIP TARGETED. I am not doing the multiple targeting simultaneously, your flawed game logic is doing that....FIX IT!!!!!

I can also see that one of your crew members leaves just after you get this bounty, was it possible they may have shot someone accidentally as well? NO. They were scared because I was blowing up from so crazy NPC police guy coming out of nowhere.

AS I said so many times, call your supervisor and the CEO of your company and tell them to STOP treating normal pilots who have no intention of being either pirates or criminals LIKE THEY ARE CRIMINALS. Fix your notoriety threshold, bounty logic, add shot and kill data to the logs so evidence is clearly there who shot who and when, and stop putting notoriety 0 or 1 gamers into the detention center and putting huge fines on their ships. Go after the pirates but leave us normal and peaceful players alone. Give us the respect and evidence we deserve to claim and prove our innocence. Stop punishing the Notoriety 1 and 0 players like criminals and pirates fining them and putting them into detention centers. You are really ing normal players off in your zeal to go after cheaters and pirates. We will leave your game for good if you don't fix this arrogance you have in the way you think we should be treated...quickly.

Steps to Reproduce
1. target a wanted ship in a nasty dog fight with 3-5 NPC police/system authority all trying to kill it.
2. fire at the wanted ship until it breaks lock (target lock:true to target lock:false)
3. Watch for evidence NPC pilots have flown into your line of fire, and look at the pilots log journal for evidence they have picked up a target lock: true status at the same time you still have the "wanted" ship targeted. The game should not allow multiple target locks by one player. It will get you a bounty and your ship will be destroyed. You are not a criminal but the game treats you like one even if your notoriety is 0 or 1 and you are not intentionally pirating.

The file upload and attachment system is not working so I can't attach flightcontrols.pptx or flightcontrols.docx I will try to upload on separate thread.

Added flight control setups as promised for a new player, no-one ever seems to give the details

edit

Flight control settings are important...get them setup from the beginning to enjoy all parts of the game, especially multi-crew and SRV driving.

The upload of files is not working. So paste the above into your browser.

1. You almost never get a complete answer when you ask a question on forums. the answer is short and not directly answering your question.

2. If you get an answer it rarely answers your very explicit and detailed question.

3. Advice given is usually a guess

4. Some advice is arrogant and offended you even asked as if you should already know the answer.

5. Most people rarely take the necessary time or detailed texting to really answer your question.

So...when you want to know about how to configure your flight controller for a computer PC, paste the above links into your web-browser. I have to do it this way because the Forum attachment for files is not working and I can't paste images into this text box. I spent an hour trying to figure out how to get .png images to you (google slides provided the answer from my u-tube streaming site sowing my own personal experience as a newbie on streaming video (sorry they are of poor quality and I am trying to edit and shorten them into a storyboard like Obsidian Ant...my favorite.

Best advice I can give is to watch Obsidian Ants videos

https://www.youtube.com/user/ObsidianAnt

Training videos:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SNSKAteZ2y4

and maybe look at my first few learning curve video missions as a newbie trying to understand it all.

These are best viewed by cell phone or lower video density settings on a laptop as the OBS video capturer is not that professional image quality...until I learn more about it.

3 Million will give you a good place to start from - more later.

Power grid missions: use the cheapest ship that can do the job, usually a Sidewinder. Since the ship will inevitably get hot from the bounties, find a friendly Anarchy nearby and swap ships there, so that your main ship remains clean.

Independent trading - only gets really profitable once you get into one of the larger trade ships - Type-7, Type-9, that kind of thing. You can do it in a Type-6 (which, unlike the other two, can land on outposts), but won't earn that much. Legal commodities under use of the BGS (e.g. Fish from agricultural boom into a famine system, or basic medicines from an industrial boom into an outbreak system) can yield up to 5000 Cr./ton, so a realistic Type-6 with 80 tons of cargo can get you 400 kCr. per run (but you don't have the money for that ship - yet). But then again, doing contract missions can get you more if you work on your reputation.

Travel and discovery - see below.

PvP - if they weren't so focussed on wing missions and killing Thargoids right now :p, show up at the Fighter Club. Friendly duels in cheap ships (stock Sideys or Eagles) every Wednesday, otherwise a few of the guys fly ships with open positions for crew members.

And yes, you pay the rebuy for the ship plus any upgrades, but not for Engineering.

Finally: Engineering. Since you didn't mention it yet, I suppose you haven't started on it. Unlocking the Engineers will familiarize you with basically every aspect of the game to various degrees - exploration, mining, rare goods, combat, smuggling... you name it, and there's an Engineer who needs that as unlock condition. One good way to start with Engineering is to unlock Felicity Farseer (she should already be known to you, i.e. appear in your engineers panel - status panel on the right side HUD, down at the bottom is a row of symbols, go right to that pentangle and click on it, and you'll get the enginners status screen in the central HUD). She can do the maximum upgrades on your FSD, but also handles in-bubble upgrades to your thrusters (up to grade 3) and can tweak power plants, shield boosters and sensors.

In order to get access to her, you'll need to be exploration Scout (or better) and then bring her one unit of Meta Alloys. Those Meta Alloys can either be bought at a planetary base in the Pleiades (Darnielles Progress in Maia) or collected from strange alien structures/devices/organisms called "Barnacles" - also to be found in the Pleiades.

Take your Adder (you can also use a Sidey or a Hauler) and put in those modules: https://eddp.co/u/UQk4eJrG

Then go to http://edtools.ddns.net/expl.php?a=v&f=sol&t=maia&r=30&ap=on and get your route (enter whatever system you are in now as starter system). Jump through all these systems, scan each system with the advanced discovery scanner, then scan all the planets on that list. Each of those scans will be worth 500k to 1 m Credits once you sell the exploration data. This is borderline exploit - but you can only do it once.

Once you're in Maia, decide whether you want to sell your accumulated scan data there (less risk - if you're killed, that data is lost) and whether you want to buy one Meta Alloy or go and collect it yourself. In the latter case, swap the DSS for a vehicle hangar plus SRV, and go and choose a ripe Barnacle site from this list. Shoot the spikes, collect the MAs (and anything else you fancy, they also drop significant materials for engineering). Apart from using one to unlock Felicity, meta alloys can also be sold for good money.

Fly back to the Bubble and find a port (any you like) where you sell just enough of your scan data to lift your exploration rank to Scout. Then continue to Felicity, hand her the MA and then (you may hace to relog here in order to jiggle the server so that the cartographics at Felicity's place are unlocked) sell all of your remaining exploration data there in order to increase your reputation with Felicity (and get easier access to her higher level mods).

Oh, and Felicity (and Elvira, and Prof. Palin) also sell tuned up Thrusters for the smaller ships (those that take size 2 or size 3 thrusters). With some Engineering, you can get a 700 m/s combat Sidey, or a 888 m/s racing Viper :D.

Thanks for the reply dude, very helpful, im just doing the scan data now, on solo for safety haha, i was just wondering, is it better to take data back to the starting area in solo? Do you get more credits?

Also am i likely to get attacked doing the data on solo by npcs?

You missed one ...

6. Some people have had a bad experience in the past which will totally colour their opinion - do not believe them, things are nowhere near as bad as these people make out.

;)

Oh, and if you're enjoying all these tips (which are mostly excellent by the way) then I've collected together a whole bunch of threads like this one in the "Manuals, guides and other stuff for new players" section of my "Best of Forum" thread.

No differences in the amount of credits from the mode used.

The chance of an NPC attack is the same in all modes, just keep an eye on mission text for warnings, specific and implied, and rank recommendations to judge your chances of being attacked and surviving it.

Wow - just, wow.

What complete and utter twaddle, sorry but your lack of knowledge about posting images etc, flooding the thread with lines of code and totally ignoring that this thread is for a short series of useful tips for a newcomer just makes your opinion of the helpfulness of this forum invalid.

Take that to the Dangerous Discussions cesspit.
