True of my chest, how I really feel about Odyssey. Some sort of open letter

I am not really good in writing things in English but I feel like I need to vent somewhere. To the moderators or the Frontier Development employees whose job is to look at the forum and interact with the community, this is not towards you. You are probably not the ones who are to blame, you just seem to unfortunatly take the blame. I'm so sorry. The only people that this post is written for are David Braben or managers that had the final voice in the making of Odyssey. But it's very unlikely that this post will ever be infront of them to read.

For me this whole thing started before the alpha with those Q&A's and Dev diary's. We got more information about Odyssey and in the dev diary's they showed us the progress of the game and how they made it. It all looked really cool and the people in the video's all looked very passionate and proud about their work. I got really exited for the Odyssey update. It seemed really cool and I couldn't wait to learn more about it and play it. Being able to go into battle on foot, in your SRV or with your ship. Discovering new tactics or creative ways to gain the upper hand. It looked awesome and promesing. To summerise that part, I got all sorts of positive feeling for the game. I loved it.

After a while the alpha came out. I personnaly didn't participate in the alpha because it was a bit too expensive for me and I don't really like alpha-testing. If I wanted to play it would be in the real thing. However I watched as many video's of the alpha as I could, learning more about it and it still seemed cool. A few bugs and performance issues but at that time Frontier told us that it was only a fraction of the full update. So I came to the conclussion for myself that it would be better in the full release and that it would all function well. Lorewise I also expected to see some new things but that was never officialy said. Still I was hoping for something on that topic. Could we find more Guardian or Thargoid stuff? Fight Thargoids on foot after that image got out? Use these new SRV's. Altho that was all speculation I felt like at least something would be added. Frontier showing only a part of Odyssey? Yeah there had to be something hidden. Unfortunatly that never happend, I knew nothing regarding that topic was said so I knew that I couldn't expect a lot. But I was personaly hoping for at least something. Unfortunatly I was let down when the full thing released. But between the release and the Alpha I still had high hopes and I was still as exited as I was before. They worked years on this project, so it had to be good.

Jumping forward to the release day. I personally did not buy Odyssey because I have exams so it would only distract me. However I closly followed the Reddit, the forums, twitter, Youtube video's ... Slowly those exited and possitive feeling started to turn into disappointment, sadness and a even a bit of rage and anger. Some might say I can't say anything about this because I don't own Odyssey but I strongly believe my voice is in my waller, even tho I am really eager to buy it and play it. But seeing all the problems that Odyssey has from so many people led me to seeing enough to know what I need to know. People are only angry about this because they care. I care too. If I didn't or if the community didn't care we would just stop playing and wouldn't have made such a scene. I just feel like Fontier Developments let me down and I can tell you that deep inside my heart this realy made me sad. It really hurt me to the point that I almost cry for it. It keeps me up at night knowing that some people work really hard for this and were really proud of what they made. Only to be shout at by the community. I love Elite Dangerous and I only want it to succeed. Seeing it fail and seeing how it's been taken care of is what really hurts me.

For example the roadmap. I was so happy that that was being made and was expecting a somehow detailed list of what they would do and when they would do it. I was expecting a long post or list. But again I got stabbed in my heart. They let me down again. It hurts, I mean that.

I was really confident that Frontier would pull itself together and start fixing bugs, and they are. But I got the feeling, especialy after the roadmap, that it isn't taken care of. I know what I'm about to say isn't true but it really feels like it. It feels like they cashed in and got their money and then just spit on our faces and leave. It makes me sad.

What I atleast want to know is where things went wrong. Mr. Braben with all due respect but what happned and how? Was it the management? Was it the devs? I don't know, only people who worked on Odyssey know that. At least tell us where it went wrong and what you will do to fix that from happening again. I'm not a bussiness expert but there are coaches that can coach management and help the company. Maybe hire some of those? Like agile coaches etc. my dad is that so I know that can help management. But Frontier please, get help. I just want you to be oke and fix it. I just want to know where it went wrong and what will happen within the company to fix it. Not what will happen to the game, but what will happen inside the company. I want to trust you again Frontier. I said it too many times now but if it's the management get coaches, training or some sort of help.

I had such high hopes for Odyssey and for me it's that what is the problem personaly. I got exited, had high hopes and expectations. But I was rapidly confronted with the opposite and that turned that all around. Leaving only disappointment, sadness and the feeling of being let down. I just needed a place to put all my emotions out and make sence of them and this helped wit that. I just needed to vent somewhere. This is probably not the right place to do it but I just needed to do this for myself; The people who this is really for and can actually do something about it will probably never even see this or let alone read it. But I guess I will just have to suck it up and deal with it. I'm just happy I could put this all in order to make sense of it and process it all. Anyways take care.

Hope you feel better now.
I agree with you , most of the rage comes from disappointment and frustration from people that only wish one thing. To see the game reach its full potential.

Only to see, update after update all the hopes dashed with recurrent instabilities and multitude of bugs.

But lets not forget, every time FD committed itself to fix as much as possible. And while not all of expectations are met, the game becomes better nevertheless.

Once you pass your exam, I'm sure that the game will be in a better state.

I'm confident of it, its not the first time that the forums and the community as a whole goes ablaze.

That said, even with all the bugs and the performance issues, there is fun to be had.
Just today, I participated in some new combat zones. And even though I was playing with an astonishing 40 FPS, I still had a great time!

I must be one of the fortunate ones that only have the performance drop to complain about.

Don't worry, there is a diamond in this lump of coal. Lets give FD time to polish it.

PS: Good luck on the exams, break a leg!

Oh yeah, I forgot....

Bad Frontier, you sold us a Beta as a full game.

THAT certainly deserves some well deserved blame. Even if I somewhat understand why they did it, I still don't support it.

I came from World of Warcraft, 20 years of gaming, met Elite, got around 600hours of gameplay, one day before Odyssey droped I took all my sh#t and went to Jellyfish Nebula, from there, Traikeou Nebula right now. Meaning of the history? Stay away from expansions.

Lots of good points, generally I'd say it's one of the more sensible posts on Odyssey, even though you never played it.
But just to keep it fair, this never happened:
A few bugs and performance issues but at that time Frontier told us that it was only a fraction of the full update.
The only thing that differs from the game they promised and the game they delivered is performance. That's it. While other criticism of the game might be justified, the 'what they sold and what we got' argument is purely about performance.
