Orders 01 SEP - 04 SEP 3308 (Edited 2 Sep)

Project Status:

We are progressing well in Santy and have repaired our influence in LHS 397 after expansion tax hit hard. There are a few systems where retreats need prevention and the usual sprinkling of conflicts to deal with but this period is mostly about restoring things back to a comfortable level. Wolfdragon is enjoying some RL time away, so I’ll be back for the next few sets of orders.

Items of note:

- LHS 397 - A likely source system again for our next expansion attempt. Boost TDW here a bit more but not too much!

- Santy - TDW has an opportunity to jump over some conflicting factions, so boost TDW here.

- LP 787-52 - By the time this goes live we will likely have lost a war against Star Pilots. Repair our influence and work towards a rematch.

- LTT 5455 - Assist Minutemen GQV in their Election. (GQV to be #2 faction, Minutemen #3)

- Wolf 629 - The Hutton Truckers arrived in system. It might be easier if they were #2 eventually, but for now support 36 Ophiuchi in their war.

ROSS 1015 - TDW has Infrastructure Failure and is at imminent risk of retreat.

Turning the Wheel remains in the final planned phase of the project. Our primary goals during this phase are to maintain the systems that The Dark Wheel controls for BGS stability and to continue to expand TDW into neighboring systems. If a new system is free from other PMFs and/or PP issues, TDW will take ownership of that system. If other PMFs occupy the system, we will seek an agreement to allow TDW to stay, be friendly, and not attempt to take control of the system. This is the “good neighbor” policy that has worked very well for the project thus far. At present, the current status of TDW in so many systems is in opposition to what the codex entry says. As TDW grows and this difference becomes even greater, it is hoped that this will trigger “something” with respect to Felicity Farseer’s quote in the TDW codex entry.

Above all, we continue Turning the Wheel for the camaraderie that working together for a common goal brings.

As always, if something pops up that “looks odd” see the General Remarks.

Please remember:
  • Do NOT work for other factions in TDW systems, unless requested below.
  • Do NOT hand in trade goods or cartography data to stations that we do not own.
  • Do NOT hand in bounties for any faction other than TDW in our systems.

Possible Next Expansion Trigger System:
TDW Missions for INF, Cartography Data and Trade Profits at TDW controlled stations, and Bounty Voucher turn ins are desired at:
Gently work LHS 397 back to the high 60% range for future expansion. A few of our other systems are quite high as well - we will take advantage of any expansion that may arise.

Conflicts:
86 Mu Herculis War - Support Coljanja Gold Power Services
9 Puppis War -Support Ralu Independents
BD-18 3106 War - Support LHS 2335 Group
Hrimfaxi War - Support Kaupolock PLC
LFT 926 Elections - Support CIA
LP 787-52 War -Support TDW, else repair inf.
LTT 5455 Elections - Support GQV. GQV to be #2, Minutemen #3 in the system)
Wolf 629 War - Support 36 Ophiuchi Future, Boost TDW.

Bounty Hunting:
Bounty hunting in any of our controlled systems (9 PUPPIS and/or ANYANWU Compromised Nav Beacons and/or Resource Extraction Sites in TDW controlled systems are great places to go).
Turn in TDW bounty vouchers earned in these locations:
- LHS 397, Domotwa, LHS 417, Ross 1015, Santy, Sokoji, Wolf 629

General Missions & Passengers:
Note: Work Missions for INF in the following systems for the given faction, when moving these factions up above the native factions, if a conflict starts, we typically want these non-native factions to WIN those conflicts against native factions
Support TDW in LHS 397, Domotwa, LHS 417, Ross 1015, Santy, Sokoji, Wolf 629
Support Baris Progressive Party in Yuqui
Support Alliance of CD-33 8748 in HR 4979

Commodity Trading AND/OR Exploration Data:
Trade and Cartographic data into TDW owned stations in the following systems:
- LHS 397 - Zillig Depot (All Pads)
(Any TDW station in systems where our influence is between 40 and 50%)

Preferred #2 non-native factions for long term stability:
9 PUPPIS - Ralu Independents
ANYANWU - Alliance of LTT 5419
HR 4979 - Alliance of CD-33 8748
LHS 397 - Sol Workers' Party
LTT 5455 - GQ Virginis General Corporation with Minutemen at #3
WOLF 629 - Sol Workers' Party

General Remarks:
Where TDW is a guest, we want TDW to be above the natives, ideally not conflicting with the other player factions, and never in conflict with the controlling faction. 15-20% INF is a good max, unless otherwise indicated
  • ARQUE - TDW is a guest of Alliance Rapid-reaction Corps, no work required here
  • CHARONIUM - TDW is a guest here with LSR but with no diplomatic comms with Star Pilots
  • CHONTANTICI - TDW is a guest of Wolf 406 Transport & Co (AEDC)
  • COELRIND - Hudson PP system, Dukes of Coelrind need to control here
  • DOMOTWA - TDW is a guest of Sidewinder Syndicate
  • HAHGWE - TDW is a guest of Civitas Dei
  • JAUNERA - TDW is a guest of Delta Squadron and is preferred for the #2 slot
  • LAVE - TDW is a guest of Lave Radio Network
  • LHS 1857 - TDW is a guest of Flotta Stellare
  • LHS 417 - TDW is a guest of Blood Brothers from Alrai
  • LP 787-52 - TDW is a guest of Minutemen
  • ROSS 1015 - TDW is a guest of Terran Colonial Forces
  • SOKOJI - TDW is a guest of Wolf 406 Transport & Co (AEDC)
  • WOLF 433 - TDW is a guest of LHS 2541 Alliance Combine (AEDC)
  • As a general rule, when factions in a TDW system are in conflict, we want the native faction (Blue N by their name in Inara when looking at the system) to LOSE. Where two non-native factions conflict, neither winner is “desired”, depending on INF level after the conflict, we would likely boost the LOSER to avoid retreat (happens at 2.5% or lower). Two native factions in conflict can be ignored and their INF in the system can be addressed after the conflict ends.
  • Another general rule, we want non-native factions above the native factions to avoid invasions. Take note that when factions are above 7% influence, and two of them match in %INF, and at least one of them has an asset, this will trigger a conflict. Where possible keep a few % between non-native factions to avoid a conflict as the loser will likely need to get boosted back up above the native factions for stability of the system.

Please continue to use EDMC or similar tools to keep local data up to date.

Keep Turning The Wheel, Hamsters!

GQV Corp is the preferred #2 faction in LTT 5455, not Minutemen.
That's a good point to elaborate on. Is this now different in LTT 5455 since we have new neighbor in the Minutemen who is a player faction?
Is pref #2 now Minutemen or still GQ Virginis General Corp?

Nothing like a little shuffle now and then...

Not that I'm aware of :)

GQV Corp is one of 'my' factions, ostensibly LTT 5455 is on permanent loan to TDW, to be returned to GQV Corp if TDW ever disbands.

I have never dealt with Minutemen, afaik they are an FLC supporting group & most of my territory is in FUC space. I have no issue with their presence in LTT 5455, they will be a stronger non-native than 562 was (easier to maintain). As long as GQV Corp has a dockable asset explo data can be sold into it should be okay, but the 'support minutemen' instruction comes as a surprise to me :(

ETA ultimately the plan for LTT 5455 has always been to get a Feudal in there & to put the Feudal in control for Hudson. While there is no Feudal it doesn't really matter who controls it, hence why I was happy for TDW to use it. GQV Corp has two other systems with relatively easy access to bounties, it used to have more but two is enough (562 only had one, it's home system). Minutemen has plenty & does not need more, it is not a strategically important system to Minutemen AFAIK.

There is no strategic benefit to supporting Minutemen over GQV Corp in LTT 5455 that I can see.

The explanation suits me, of course. Seeing how this project has progressed makes me think that this is an oversight. I presume we'll hear a response shortly. I'm glad you explained in response to my query. I asked because I didn't want to exert any effort towards the result of this election until I knew.

An error in the orders, for sure. I did not update the standard template bit.
However, and Riverside probably wont like this too much, - As Minutemen are flagged as a player faction, are actively player supported and share both some systems and a similar area of operation with TDW, supporting them as #2 with GQV as #3 seemed a more stable configuration.

We definitely messed up letting Wolf 562 Major Inc be retreated, which left the hole open in the first place.

After re-reading Riverside's argument above, I'll alter the orders. GQV at #2 and Minutemen a couple of percent behind at #3 should work.
If, after some months of operating with that arrangement things are too chaotic we may have to consider swapping the two factions.

BOTH factions must be kept at or above 6% or so to prevent inbound invasions.

Orders changed here and on discord, the block template text is also altered so Sunday should reflect the situation as in previous post.

As of this writing we still have a few hours to get some War CZ's in for TDW over in Minutemen system LP 787-52 where we are behind 2 to 3 against Star Pilots.

To further confuse matters, we also co-exist with Star Pilots over in Charonium, so don't shoot them too much in LP!

3-D chess is a simple game compared to BGS shenanigans sometimes!

Thanks Crypto. I'm not concerned about 562, it was one of my weaker factions anyway and it appears to have lost it's useful access to bounties with Hutton Truckers now controlling Wolf 562.

Orders 04 SEP - 08 SEP 3308

Project Status:

Most of TDW space is traveling along nicely. We won the war in LP 787-52 from behind, a great effort! There are a few retreats to prevent and the usual assortment of conflicts to win, with opportunities for missions, trade and carto at various places.

Items of note:

- LHS 397 - Continue to build TDW to about 65% for a possible future expansion.

- Santy - Continue to boost TDW here to push for a system control conflict.

- Retreats in Sokoji (TDW 1.9%) and Yuqui (Baris Progressive Party 2.3%) need attention for several days until cleared.

- LTT 5455 - Assist GQ Virginis in their election. We want GQ at #2 and Minutemen at #3. Currently 1-2 against! (orders here corrected since last time!)

- ROSS 1015 - TDW has Infrastructure Failure but is no longer at risk of retreat.

Sorry I haven't read through all 144 pages yet, but didn't FDev say that a player honked a system with it in that system, but just failed to find it? I swore I read that in the Quest to Find Raxxla thread. I'll edit and link it if I find that again.
EDIT: I think it was this twitch stream
Have a look here:

An interesting assortment of changes in just a few days. TDW itself is mostly trouble free but there are a number of conflicts elsewhere that we are interested in, as well as meddling happening in several systems. TDW influence is slipping in a number of places where it really shouldn’t. LTT 5455 conflict resolved well. At some point soon we can fix Minutemen into #3 but there are other things to manage first.

Items of note:

- LHS 397 - Continue to build TDW to about 65% for a possible future expansion.

- Santy - Continue to boost TDW here to push for a system control conflict.

- Retreats to watch for: TDW in Arque. Down below 2% but not yet active. Domotwa, TDW too low, LFT 926 - CIA are low enough to be an invasion risk, Sokoji - TDW in retreat but possibly safe now, Yuqui - keep an eye on Baris Progressive Party

Lave - Both TDW and Lave Radio Network are lower than they should be. One of the lower factions got a large boost which is concerning in such a high population system.

Thought I'd check in before exerting effort in Domotwa, also knowing that updated SOs are on the way. TDW is a guest of Sidewinder Syndicate. We find ourselves at war with TEAC - another player faction. Has Sidewinder Syndicate expressed a preferred outcome for #2 in this system?

EDIT:
Looks like TDW's INF has slipped over the last few months (and TEAC's rose). Also looks like the standings of the two factions switched places recently.

Well done Commanders, most of the conflicts from last time have ended - however a whole new swarm of conflicts have broken out. There are also the usual housekeeping tasks to do. Wolfdragon has had a lovely vacation and is on his way back as I write this. I’ll be back for Thursday orders.

Items of note:

LHS 397 - Continue to build TDW to about 65% for a possible future expansion. We actually slipped somewhat.

Santy - We have an Election for system control starting after tick.

Domotwa War - TDW are up against Terra-EX. Please win for TDW but only by a single day margin.

Lave - Both TDW and Lave Radio Network are lower than they should be. This continues to be a problem.

  • LP 787-52 - TDW is a guest of Minutemen and is preferred for the #2 slot
  • ROSS 1015 - TDW is a guest of Terran Colonial Forces
  • SOKOJI - TDW is a guest of Wolf 406 Transport & Co (AEDC)
  • WOLF 433 - TDW is a guest of LHS 2541 Alliance Combine (AEDC)
  • As a general rule, when factions in a TDW system are in conflict, we want the native faction (N by their name in Inara) to LOSE. Where two non-native factions conflict, neither winner is “desired”

Items of note:

Lave - Both TDW and Lave Radio Network are lower than they should be. This continues to be a problem.
This brings up a question that has been on my mind for a while, especially since I did a couple of missions in the last week for TDW in Lave. (Charlotte isn't giving out a lot of missions, especially of variety in Lave, but that's another issue.)

Working with the presumption that we'd like to lift both TDW and Lave Radio Network...
Let's say I grab a single essentially-identical mission from both TDW and LRN on the mission board. (For fun, let's say it's a black box op. for 4INF.)
Does this impact both factions equally? Does it just pull INF from other factions? Is it really even possible to lift two factions this way- especially the two highest-INF factions?

I'm presuming that the answer isn't very straightforward even ignoring other factors like random traffic, nobody can presume they're working alone and/or in sync, etc. I presume that, even considered alone, it will depend on things like how much INF there is to swipe from the other factions, etc., etc.

It is somewhat complex.
If the two, otherwise identical, missions are the only activity in system for the entire tick, then yes, both factions will go up. All other factions will go down a bit.

The amount of change each faction gets will be inversely proportional to their current influence. TDW at ~12% will gain more that LRN at ~50% for the same amount of work.
The remaining factions will lose some influence proportional to their position. Lave Fortune Organisation is currently at #3 and only a little behind TDW, but will lose the most. Lave Jet family is already at 1% and will lose essentially nothing.
As Lave's population is insanely large and a single +4 inf mission for each of two factions is tiny, any movement will be small at best. The influence percentages are recalculated at the end of the tick process to add up to exactly 100% and such tiny fractional movements would be barely noticed.

It is easier to boost the lower factions than the higher ones in any system.

Recent history in Lave showing only the lower factions:
1662976971418.png

Enough work was done for Defence party (white) to boost them ~4% in a couple of days, then similar work was done for Lave Fortune (green) a bit later. Nearly all of that change of influence came from LRN and TDW. Since TDW and LRN both show a slight uptick in the most recent days, the work you have done, and anyone else helping, has started to address the problem.
Lave is such a massive system that hostile activity moves quite slowly - but repair is also quite slow.

We want LRN to be 50-55% and us to be ~15%. All others can sit wherever they like, preferably below 7% each.

This brings up something else about BGS that isn't all that intuitive. Lave is an extreme example of stability. Its huge population makes influence changes slow and harder to initiate. LRN were created in Lave so cannot be retreated. We (TDW) invaded / retreated out another faction - the name of which long escapes me, to make the space we currently occupy. So long as TDW remains quite high, Lave is immune to other faction's invasions. Part of the defence of Lave is keeping TDW at a reasonable level, such that there are plenty of other nearby systems with non-natives at much lower levels and thus they are targeted for invasions instead of us. As we found when getting into Lave, its actually easier to move ALL other systems in the cube than to move Lave itself!

An example of a system that is a dumpster fire of instability is Ross 1015. Its population is a tiny 16,580 so any activity by a passing Commander has an outsized effect.
Inara shows it as a sea of red and yellow negative faction states:
1662978664718.png

Today's snapshot is actually about as good as the system can expect to be - all the non-native factions are high enough to be unlikely invasion targets and TCF is at a healthy lead percentage. The negative states are for the most part insignificant. If however, TCF wanted to expand from this system, you would have three non native factions squashed down with the remaining natives all sharing ~25% total influence, likely putting several of them into active retreat. Not fun times for anyone!

I appreciate the explanations. Some of the info I already knew but is certainly useful for context and for those CMDRs who don't already know. It's always interesting to learn more about the complexities & subtleties of the BGS.
Lave is certainly an exceptional case in stability/inertia (primarily due to its population). I'm certain that numerous CMDRs who have been contributing to TDW goals have noticed the much larger impact we can exert on smaller, lower-traffic systems. We have moved some of those impressively.

I really like your characterization of Ross 1015 in terms of BGS stability -or lack thereof. Well put! :)

Orders 15 SEP - 18 SEP 3308

Project Status:

Hello Commanders. TDW space continues to see a fair number of conflicts break out. Most are going the way we want them to but a few need a little extra help. We are also very close to expansion in 9 Puppis. Likely someone is using us to fill in the hole in LTT 3007 next door.
Today’s orders were partly assembled by 8-year old Miss Crypto who has shown quite a bit of interest in this weird game of space spreadsheets!

Items of note:

LHS 397 - Keep us at around 65% for now.

Santy - one last day should see TDW win the election. We can also support the Independents in the war.

Domotwa War - TDW are winning by one day as planned.

Lave - TDW and Lave Radio Network continue to slip lower than they should be. Missions and bounties etc for both here please!

HR 4979 - Two wars, both going the wrong way - Support Alliance of CD-33 8748 and Nuenets Corp. in their respective wars.

Keep TDW at about 65% for future expansion. Looks like we might be pushed to expand from 9 Puppis. No need to help that along but do not oppose it if someone else wants to do the work!

Lave - boost both LRN and TDW
Anyanwu - Boost Alliance of LTT 5419 above the war and win any conflict they get in.
